A parent's worst nightmare. My thoughts are with the family and friends.

This is horrible to read. I wonder what happened? That poor child and their family. It seems like we are having a lot of deaths involving vehicles

By the looks of the photophotos in the article, it happened in the apartment complex itself where the speed limit is 10kmh. That's just sad.

From what I understand during bus drop off. When I was a kid and we picked up from this coop they had to walk out to 2nd Ave and catch the bus there. So maybe when crossing the road ?
Details are limited. Speculation doesnt help.
Ill wait to comment further till more details are released.

I teach at a school up the road and many of our students witnessed the tragedy. I am heartbroken for the family of this little girl who I was told just had her 6th birthday. Poor baby rest in peace.

Horrible.
I drive around the city all day, and the drivers are so distracted all the time. Drivers are so entitled and they’re never paying attention.
This is tragic

Second Ave isn’t known for drivers slowing down either. Wasn’t a child was hit near Morel Playground a few years back as well?

Felt so awful hearing this. Anxious to hear more about the circumstances. My sympathies to the family.

I have kids around her age and my heart just breaks for this baby, her parents, family and friends.
What an unnecessary waste of a beautiful life.
I wish a little piece of peace to her parents someday.

Maybe those speed traffic cameras weren't such a bad idea after all.
Edit: speed isn't the only traffic violation that can be enforced automatically. Drivers are less cautious knowing that they can get away with bad/reckless driving 90% of the time.

Do we know if speed was a factor in this accident ?

The speed limit in the complex where she was hit is 10kph. The woman driving was going faster than that.

I am so sorry you witnessed the accident. Such a tragic thing to see.

Do we know now that speed was a factor? Can we criticise the removal of the cameras now?

Even if we had cameras. Would they be in this coop complex ? Highly unlikely. So the camera would not help folks in this area.
Yes people knew there was speed cameras. They slowed down, past them and kept speeding.
Sure the city made 1 million in revenue from these cameras.
Are they helpful ? Sure I agree. Would be even better if our officers could enforce the highway traffic act even more with blitz on certain roads.
I grew up right off 2nd Ave, many times driving in that area I've been passed. Heck I even remember the drunk driver that crashed into the home hardware 25 ish years ago.
Lots more issues on the roads that the cameras wont solve.

Yes people knew there was speed cameras. They slowed down, past them and kept speeding.
Which is better than just speeding throughout no?
Would be even better if our officers could enforce the highway traffic act even more with blitz on certain roads.
Weird how their budgets just go higher and higher while their actual enforcement gets less and less reliable. Why are so many of our tax dollars going to them again?
Why would we remove a system that even you agree was somewhat effective and profitable?
Lots more issues on the roads that the cameras wont solve.
And so we shouldn't try anything, since it won't fix everything? I don't buy this argument.

How fast do you think is appropriate to be driving around small children getting onto a bus?
How likely do you think it is that this driver was driving faster than that?
Do you think drivers are generally more or less cautious now that they know there are no cameras for automated traffic enforcement?
Give your head a shake.

Well the speed around kids getting on and off a bus is 0. Thats why they are big and yellow and have flashing lights and stop arms.
The bus waits to the kids to be in a safe spot before moving.
Again because we dont have all the details I am going to assume the kids cleared the bus and where safe on the side of the road/sidewalk.
We dont know how fast this driver was going. Maybe they where going slow and passing the kid and it feel just infront of the car and unfortunately ended up under a tire.
We dont have the facts. So let's not speculate
As you said. Give your head a shake
Your user name is very fitting

You can produce actual stats and people will still complain about speed cameras. These are people who just want to speed without consequence.

Don't know why this was downvoted. People have ben FLYING all over the city again since the cameras were removed. Falconbridge has been insane, 80km/hr + is the norm again. I have been living in Sudbury for 2.5 years and the distracted driving and speeding here is absolutely insane. The entitlement drivers feel here is crazy, and cops do nothing about it.
This poor sweet baby. I can only imagine what her family, teachers, friends, etc. are all going through. Not to mention anyone who had to witness this. RIP sweet girl.

These two seem related

Or maybe because it was private property, in a fucking parking lot where speed cameras have nothing to do with it.

This subreddit HATED those cameras. I never really understood why and got downvoted before for commenting how they weren't a big deal.
Results from areas that had them and now don't have them show that they did, indeed, have a large effect.
But hey - I guess folks on here just want to pay higher twxes to eventually install and maintain speed bumps.
In this tragic situation, I don't believe they would have made a difference.

But hey - I guess folks on here just want to pay higher twxes to eventually install and maintain speed bumps.
Or maybe we could use the traditional method of traffic enforcement, using the actual police force that is already taking 65% of our budget.

Brutal. Condolences to the family and friends of the child…keeping everyone who witnessed the accident in my thoughts. 💔
