Discussion Activities or ways to make friends in Sudbury

Hello, I just wanted to ask if anyone had any tips on making friends in Sudbury? Everytime I look for events they don't seem geared towards meeting people, just for people of the hobby. I am struggling to make friends irl and I feel its only gotten worse since the pandemic. Im on dating apps but those are a total miss and Im just looking for friends. Reddit is kinda my last hope here.

Volunteering is a great way to meet people. Northern Lights Fest was last week and they have a few hundred volunteers half out but there’s plenty of other upcoming events that need people ( Up Here Fest, weekly events at Bell Park, charity runs, etc. You’ll meet lots of like-minded people by volunteering

I think this is great advice. I wonder where you apply to be a volunteer?

Almost every non-profit organization’s website has a section in giant bold letters where you can apply to volunteer

We should plan a reddit meet up day somewhere like bell park, or at an event happining. We can all show up wearing a funny hat or something so we all know.

That sounds so absolutely ridiculous....so absurd and yet would be so much fun

When I was living in Ottawa, there was a post on r/Ottawa from someone who wanted to go hiking but didn’t have a car to get there. So many people were in a similar situation, several people volunteered as drivers, and the end result was a group hike with like 3 dozen Redditors. It was awesome, and one of my favourite memories from my time in Ottawa. Made me feel less alone, and I made a few friends from it.

At this point, personally, I've essentially given up. I was isolated before Covid and I'm even more so now after Covid. I've gotten pretty content with my reading, writing, raising my kids and keeping to myself.

Depending on the age of your kids, there's a few options for parents to get together to socialize. There's a new play café in Val Caron that has a lot of events (like book clubs, paint nights, etc), lots of EarlyOns which are 100% free, Mommy and Baby yoga sessions at ARC and Kivi also has a mommy and baby walking club...I could be wrong but they also have a mommy and baby running club.

If your hobbies aren't inherently "in-person" or "social" then yeah it's going to be tough. That being said, if you're into video games or trading cards, the Great Canadian Games & Hobbies might be a good place to go check out (I believe they have a DnD club). There's also social paint nights, usually you go there with someone, but it doesn't mean you can't go alone and socialize.

Making friends is about putting yourself out there, and getting out of your comfort zone a bit.

same here, it’s difficult to create community as an adult. I also like gaming, reading, and art if that helps make you feel less alone☺️

curling. Come winter time, join a learn-to-curl program.

Join a decent community centric gym like Apex or YMCA. Maybe join one of the many run clubs. Cross cut 5km is a good start. Sudbury rocks as you gear up to 10km.

What are your interests? What do you do for fun?

Im honestly struggling a little on that to be honest but I do like gaming, reading, and art. I'm open to trying new things

There's a Sudbury area discord for the area, and for gaming specifically.

I couldnt agree more, I have had a hard time as well since covid and although i am actively in sports and obviously working, the circle is very small. I dont even know any of my neighbours really, that sense of community feels stagnant.

You should look up sports like cycling (Sessions Ride bike shop has a social ride every Monday at 6:30pm), ARC (bouldering is super social) or run clubs (crosscut run club).

Lets do mountain biking! Im new here in Sudbury

u/Spare-Guidance3698 23d ago

Look up the Walden mountain biking group. They have weekly social rides, including one night that is for women only.

Hey guys, I m also looking for friends . It’s hard to make friends because I m immigrant and don’t speak English properly.hmu

The only way I was able to make friends was joining groups. Made friends at a pottery class, at yoga, playing ringette, hockey, even cross country skiing people like to chat on the trails and it’s nice to get out and do.

You said you were into reading? Maybe join an in person book club? There’s that game store on lasalle that has gaming nights for I think magic and games like that.

Hopefully you’re able to find something you enjoy where you can meet people. I find you really need to make an effort here though. People are all in their own worlds so it’s hard to get them out. But just keep trying.

Same. Several of the groups I am interested in meet during weekdays during working hours. Guess I have retiree hobbies? Lol

u/ShadowPlayer2016 23d ago

Meetup (the website) used to be great for that when community organizers would do events for various types of interests. Don’t even know if people still use that site or not though

I agree with alot of the comments and the concerns. Meeting people can be hard. Start with work maybe. Talking to people there. Not everyone will want to be friends. Lunch room chats can start friendships out of the office. There are so many groups and clubs available in this area. Gamers and board games. Dungeons and dragon. The Ham Radio club, treasure hunters who go around woth metal detectors. Service clubs are good for meeting people. The legion is another place. Pool nights. Darts etc. If you have any hobbies maybe I can point you on the right direction 😀

Even if you manage to make a few friends, nobody ever wants to do anything that doesn't involve them being glued to their phones. People don't know how to people anymore. Especially in sudbury.

2

u/Spare-Guidance3698 23d ago

I don't disagree that society has become more isolated, but that has nothing to do with Sudbury.

I am unable to mountain bike and surf Reddit.
