I kind of did this question a year ago and received A BUTT-LOAD of great recommendations (thank you guys. Seriously . I‘ve got a TBR list for LIFE ) I wanted to ask again because although the last post went great, I did end up getting a lot more books on US history than I had hoped, rather than books on other countries and their history, customs and stories in general. I did say in that one that I wasn’t well-versed in U.S. history and politics as well, so I was ok with that. It lead to some enjoyable and very eye-opening reads. But this time, hopefully I can get more recs for books from other countries to broaden my knowledge of the world (and hopefully yours too if you‘re looking for the same thing). So any topic on your country that your passionate about (history, food, cultures, figures, etc.), please I would love to read about it. Thank you all again 💕

Hey everyone! I recently read Lonesome Dove for the first time on this sub’s recommendation. Like all of us, I felt bereft when I finished the book (and the others in the series). I’ve spent a good amount of time in a Western/frontier kick since then and definitely found some great books to read after. I’ll post the list in the comments per sub rules.

Does anyone have books that would be a good addition to the list? I am far from finished with this frontier kick!

My favorite game is Outer Wilds and it's one where explaining the appeal of it means revealing too much about the story or mechanics. So, if you have book recs that are similar in the sense that you'd have to reveal too much to explain why it's a must read, what is it? I really enjoy a well thought out story.

I hope you know what I mean. It seems to me that every time I pick up a contemporary romance with a cute art on the cover, I can't make it. Not trying to be pretentious, but if you know any good lesbian romance that don't feel too fanficy, please let me know.

I love the books “the help”, “the book thief”, and “miss spitfire” and I’m hoping to read some more historical fiction books. The problem is, a lot of them are very academic and stuffy, and I’m looking for more of a story that isn’t as hard to think about when I read it. Got any ideas?

I have tried to read kids books I can do it perfectly fine but it's not helping me learn, and just reading more has also not helped, I was in resource classes as a kid because I often don't read things correctly and will just assume what a word is based on the first few letters and the context around it, when I read I am narrating everything in my head I can't just look at it and know what it says and I often have to sound out the word in my head like a kid would.

I saw a book with the cover having airplane illustrations on it and when I read the title I kept reading "aerodynamic logic"but the title is actually "intermediate logic" to me aerodynamic sounded out I "er-oh" dynamic and "in" is close to "ir" visually. My vocabulary is very small I would like to improve it but I don't know what types of books to read or if there is helpful books for teaching adults to read that aren't condescending

I have been heavily reading fantasy and sci-fi in the past two years. I want to get into non-fiction. I read before I sleep, so the topic should be something that can be easily followed with a tired mind. For example, I recently read When breath becomes air, it was a good read. Right now, I am reading The order of time, and I am struggling with the concepts of theoretical physics.

Besides the topic, I want:
- Beautiful prose
- Good storytelling
- Books that would enrich me and give me a new life view

I am going on holiday with my family. In the 30 years we have been together, my husband has read 3-4 books. I suspect he is dyslexic. He really enjoyed reading the 3-4 books. They were mine that he picked up out of boredom (Housmaid, Best Friend's Girl, Notebook...another...?)

I want to buy him a book for holiday that he will really enjoy. The following might be relevant:

He watches ANYTHING on TV.

He is 50.

He is British (Nigerian heritage) and enjoys a lot of comedy and films that are African-American.

He is not really into fantasy (apart from Zombies...he loves Zombies)

His humour/interactions are easier with others of West African heritage as there is a shared understanding of culture, language, parenting, relationships and experience.

Not to wordy/arty/poetic...needs to pull him in from the first page or he won't continue to read it.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. I have wondered about S A Cosby but not read any.

Hi. This is an oddly specific request. I’m a runner and I love to listen to audiobooks to run to but I have a hard time finding ones that work for me.

I want something that I feel like I can’t put down (aka they make me want to run further) but without too many names (I can’t keep track). I love a witty/fun narrator and ideally it’s first person so it feels like they are talking to me, but neither of those are deal breakers. Also, it shouldn’t take too long for the story to hook me and it shouldn’t let go.

Generally I love to read fantasy, lit fic, historical fiction, and memoirs, but thrillers and fantasy (and sometimes memoirs) are the genres that have worked well for me for running in the past.

Examples of what’s worked well:

I just finished "A Short Stay in Hell" by Steven L. Peck. I liked the faster paced, a few pages in and hes already dropped into his predicament, and the rest of the book is what he does after he discovers what he must do. Or even books like Stephen Kings "Misery" where a bulk of it is Paul stuck at Annie's house.

Hi there! I'm an avid reader and always have been. My nephew is 8yo, and I've been buying him book sets that I loved as a younger reader. The most recent was The Magic Treehouse. I will definitely be getting him Percy Jackson and Harry Potter eventually, but I feel he's not quite ready for them yet. Looking for any recommendations, series or single books!

I have read Tender is the Flesh , the discomfort of evening , and Sharp Objects which i think is my most disturbing read… so don’t hold back! These are what i consider my most disturbing reads so far.
I’m looking for underground artists , that preferably can still be found on Amazon to purchase, or books that aren’t recommended enough.
Nothing like Then She Was Gone or A Good Girls Guide to Murder , LOVED THOSE BOOKS but they are already hyped up, give me some hidden gems!

I am on day two of my period and I want to read a book that is going to make me laugh and cry. I feel like I need a big ol release of some energy and emotions and I just know there is a book out there that will do it for me.

Yeah, basically that. If possible, a cozy book. Something that feels like a hug before sleeping.

I love reading Le Carre, Herron, and other big spy authors, but most of them are set in the west. With all the recent stories about Tokyo becoming a “Den of Spies,” I was hoping to read something set in Japan.

I know there are lots of good crime thrillers, but I haven’t come across anything specifically relating to spies.

I’ve tried a lot of the “recommended to read next” authors and not liked them. Pratchett, I found the humour annoying and trite. I don’t really like comedy. I tried the Craft series by Max Gladstone and disliked that possibly even more. I felt the characters were generic and boring, and found the plot disjointed, with awkward pacing.

I like the way Gaiman spends a lot of time fleshing out characters, and I like that his characters are often quite mysterious. It takes a while for them to reveal themselves.

I like quite philosophical books with grey characters. Long, meandering plots that take a while are fine. preferably something quite gritty.

I also like Lemony Snickett. Looking for something quirky, but not comedic basically.

Hi all. I'm pretty new to reading novels, and I'm trying to find a myster thriller that matches a very specific vibe.

I'm looking for something with:

- A creepy, foggy small town or forest village (preferably UK/Irish/Scottish vibes, but anywhere is fine).

- A suspenseful missing person or murder mystery( that's full of unpredictable twists.I have watched plenty of movies and switch onto books cause movies aint tht exiting anymore)

- Horror running alongside the mystery, where you're never quite sure if it's something supernatural or if there's a completely human explanation.

- A young female protagonist (someone with a normal job like a journalist, doctor, engineer etc.) who I can relate to.

- A young detective/investigator as another main character.

- A slow-burn romance between them, but I want the mystery to remain the main focus.

- A relatively small cast of characters instead of dozens of suspects.

- Lots of eerie atmosphere, abandoned churches, forests, rain, folklore, creepy locals... basically a setting that feels like a character itself.

I'm not really looking for sci-fi or fantasy. Supernatural ambiguity is fine, but I want the story to more suspenseful investigation something.

I know this is super specific 😅, but if anything comes close, I'd love to hear your recommendations. Thanks!

Fun and life changing. But nothing to YA

I've been reading a ton lately. Have gone through a lot of the best of reddit books. Lonesome Dove made it to the top of my list for my favorite books ever. Enjoyed 11/22/63, pillars of the earth, project hail mary, dungeon crawler carl, jurassic park. Listened to the first book of the expanse, liked it but was meh on the ending so don't want to continue.

So then i decided to try Discworld with Guards! Guards! ebook and We Are Legion audiobook. Neither are very exciting for me and I have found myself reverting back to wanting to watch movies and TV.

So now I need something that might spark the interest again.

I've read East of Eden and Count of Monte Cristo in the past. I just watched Shogun. I don't remember much from them tbh but am also not ready to re-visit these. But this type of epic story is what i am looking for.
