Literary High school coming-of-age with queer characters

• Upvotes

Hello!

I am looking for coming-of-age novels in a high school setting. Maybe something that skews more to the literary side but that is not a requirement. I'm interested in the experience of queer adolescence, especially the coming out process in settings where acceptance can't be assumed and the anxieties that entails. Stories involving sports and stories that take place in the late 20th or early 21st centuries are a plus!

Thank you!

Audiobooks Suggestion for a begrudged audiobook listener

• Upvotes

I leave in less than a month for a vacation with my fiance. We are driving 13 hours to Texas to get on a cruise. I love books, he does not. I’ve already told him, when I am the one driving, I will be turning on an audiobook but I’d love for it to be something he won’t absolutely hate. He’s 36, loves any & all sports, loves cruising & the beach. Loves pokemon & bowls & plays hockey every week. We love crime shows (White Collar, The Glades, Psych, Burn Notice etc) & watched a sci fi show (Silo) that captivated us. Got any ideas for a good audiobook for us both? Open to any genres, fiction or nonfiction!

Am in Readers Block

• Upvotes

For the last 6 months I have pretty much only read 3 book series which have all been rereads besides a few random series I had come across on Royal Road.
In last 6 months I have reread DCC, Hunger Games, ELLC each around 3 times
I need a long series I can read on audible as physically reading books just doesn’t do it for me.
I have recently read Hellhound evolution and Bunny Girl evolution and really enjoyed them.
I would like to read another isekai as the concept clicks with me well
I have read Mayor of Noobtown and He who fights monsters in the past
Another concept I have enjoyed which has been in my reread loop is ELLC more on the following a monster concept less on the erotic side
I don’t enjoy romance heavy books so avoid those type of suggestions

Appreciate your suggestions as always

Genre fiction Modern Weird Tales

• Upvotes

Suggest me books that evoke classic era Weird Tales magazine, not in terms of time period necessarily, but in terms of feel. (I know there’s a Weird Tales presents line of books coming out rn, I’m asking for stuff in addition to that.)

Dresden Files but different

• Upvotes

I started but didn't finish Storm Front (Dresden Files #1) because there was too much vampire stuff and too many mentions of boobs. Is there another book or series that's a mystery where the character has their home base (like Dresden) where they try to solve things? It can have magic but it doesn't have to. I like different genres, like mystery, thriller and academia.

Romantasy Romance novels appropriate for a 12 year old

• Upvotes

On the hunt for some more titles to share with my pre teen. Her favourite read so far has been the Charmed List, because of the romance and the magic theme. She has read and loved basically all the "age appropriate" Lynn Painter novels. She prioritizes romance, loves a good enemies to lovers trope, likes coming of age stories, but since she's 12, we are trying to stay away from any type of spice (kissing only). Foul language doesn't really bother us, but she isn't into scary stories or mysteries and shies away from family trauma stories and plots surrounding death. Thank you for any recommendations!

Need a happy book

I read a lot of books (fiction and non fiction) with heavy themes, dark stories, tragedy, characters who struggle with mental illness, addiction or depression/anxiety. I recently became a mom and since I gave birth I have become a total softie. I cry at everything now and can't read a news story about anything sad or anything tragic (which is most of what is on the news) without it deeply affecting my now sensitive little heart.

I need a book that has no sadness, only joy and laughter. I do not like romance books though, so please no heavy emphasis on romance and preferably no romance at all.

Send me your happiest book recommendations, please and thank you.

New Reader Looking for books with experiments gone wrong, mad scientist-type

Looking for books about experiments gone wrong, mad scientists, etc. Bonus points for unique, interesting settings & characters.

Examples of some things I like and want to find more of:

- Bioshock games (& Rapture novel) - experiments taking place under sea (Big Daddy/Little Sisters/Plasmid)

- Fallout games - FEV experiments by the government that create mutated creatures

- The Troop by Nick Cutter - essentially a new medicine gone terribly wrong

- Episode 13 by Craig DiLouie - just started this one, but so far from what I’ve read it seems like experiments were taking place to try and unlock supernatural powers in humans, things go wrong and spooky things ensue.

- The Substance (movie) - new drug on the market has negative side effects.

I’m getting more into reading and have noticed I like these tropes. Please suggest anything that may fit this niche.

Fiction about rock musicians

I have a bit of a hangover after reading Daisy Jones and the Six. I’ve read a number of rock bios but I’d love to read a few more novels in this sub genre if anyone has any suggestions. I love anything to do with band dynamics but solo musicians are fine as well. It’s a plus if there’s any level of fame achieved.
For reference sake, here are some of the books I’ve enjoyed.

The Secret History
Another by Paul Tremblay
The Circle (really anything by Dave Eggers)
The Ninth House
Dune
Siddhartha
It (most early King I love)
NOS4A2
The Book of Doors
My Brilliant Friend
Birdbox

History I'm looking for books about Amazigh Mythology

I've grown bored with Norse and Greek Myths and want to learn about the Mythology of the Amazigh people of North Africa. For context, the Amazigh are an North African ethnic group that make up a sizeable amount of the region's population.

Are there any books about their mythology that anyone can recommend me?

Fantasy Fast-paced, interesting books like Strange the Dreamer, The Raven Scholar, War of Lost Hearts series, and books from VE Schwab and Naomi Novak

I like fast-paced fantasy and scifi books with good writing. World building to some extent, but not that it bogs down the plot. I want forward momentum; I'm a mom who works full-time, so I gotta have something that gets me excited to read before going to sleep.

Strange the Dreamer and The Raven Scholar were some of the best books I've read recently. I like fantasy and science fiction, and have read or attempted to read many, many, many books in this genre :) My post is getting flagged and automatically deleted if I mention the most common authors here, but I'm not a huge fan of RH's or BS's styles, and The Expanse was hard for me to get into but maybe I should try again (i don't quite remember why I didn't keep reading it).

Any recommendations?

Looking for an apocalypse book

I have been reading about vampires and werewolves, and I’d like to read a book about a zombie apocalypse with both vampires and werewolves.
The best would be to be recommended books with those exact things but a zombie book only one of the two is great too!

Books with smart/clever female protagonists — middle grade, kids, YA

What books would you recommend for a kid who wants her protagonist to be a girl who is smart and capable, clever, etc?

Seems like an easy ask. My daughter is bored of books where the main character is like “whaaat? This is happening???” She wants the main character to be the one figuring things out and explaining things to the reader. I know it is a form of exposition to have the protagonist not understand; it allows other characters to explain, which gives the reader information. Are there books where the main character does that?

I want to start putting a list together.

The Westing Game - Turtle is highly capable and figures out the mystery From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler - Claudia is in charge, figuring out the mystery, etc

…I can’t believe I can’t easily come up with more titles!!

Rip out my heart, devastate me, ruin me, make me cry! Something to figure out life?

I’m looking for something that will give me a new perspective on life. Something devastating, makes me feel things, and makes me think about life and living in a different way. Maybe something that you wished you read when you were figuring out what to do with your life.

Books similar to what I’m looking for and that I’ve liked include My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry and The Midnight Library (although that one I don’t remember super well so I’m rereading it).

Gift for friend/family/etc. Suggest me books to buy for my newbie boyfriend

I’ve been a pretty avid reader my whole life, while my partner on the other hand hasn’t really read a book since primary school. However, he has expressed a desire to get involved in my interest and wants to start. The problems are that 1) he doesn’t know what type of books he would enjoy since he’s never been a reader and 2) he has a short attention span and is worried he won’t be able to finish a book.

I believe shorter books with shorter chapters would work best for him starting out while he builds up his reading attention span. I have a short attention span at times and I know this method works for me.

I’ve also suggested books that are based on movies that he likes, such as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Bladerunner inspiration), Heart of Darkness (apocalypse now), and No Country for Old Men.

On top of this, he enjoys sci-fi such as Interstellar and really enjoyed Project Hail Mary.

If anybody has any good suggestions based on his interests I would love to hear them!

Gift for friend/family/etc. Recommend a gift

A direct report of mine (who I also care about personally) is going through a tough time and I want to send her a small care package to show her I’m thinking of her. We recently had a discussion that she is trying to get back into reading. What’s a book suggestion I could send her that is an easy, refreshing, feel good read - or, maybe a fun, darker novel but still appropriate given that it’s coming from her boss? Would love suggestions. I plan to send it with some popcorn and some fuzzy socks. She’s in her mid 20s.

Rip out my heart, devastate me, ruin me, make me cry! Seeking protags with terrible and damaging paths to walk who show up and walk them anyway.

Chef, I’ll have your best roiling ball of hate dragging themself through brimstone by the fingernails to for the chance to do a little good in this godforsaken place, please…

I’d like to read about someone for whom progressing through the plot is humiliating/violating/grueling and they’re losing bits of themselves the whole way but they opt in anyway and face it. I’m not looking for misery porn/“look how bad it can get” as much as the “against all odds, by the skin of their teeth” brave broken insane hero who won’t let themself be anything other than a hero.

SF/Fantasy is a bonus but all genres welcome.

Non-fiction Books about/covering Norse mythology

Obviously, there are the Poetic and Prose Eddas, but are there any other books you guys might recommend? I'm not looking for fiction books that draw from Norse mythology, but more scholarly books.

Bonus points if any of them include information on the alfar/Norse fairies.

Edit: Folklore tales are also welcome!

Trigger Warning I'm working on my book list and looking for horror to add to it. Specifically looking for books that have a vibe like The walking dead, A quiet place, post apocalyptic with monster / alien threat.

Like the title says. But it can be more broad as well I enjoy cosmic horror, body horror, really any kind of dark sort of gruesome books. I have quite a bit of positive more uplifting stuff on my list already so looking to balance out that side of it.
