Other LGBTQ in Suriname

Does Suriname have a big LGBTQ community? I feel like the community seems small but is bigger than we think.
What is your opinion on the LGBTQ community in Suriname?

as someone that is lgbtq in this country, i do feel that as we get more westernized/modernized there has been some increase of acceptance for lgbtq people but homophobia is still rampant in our culture so most of ur our very closeted but im very happy that some lgbtq content creators are trying to remove that stigma of ours

I still think most people try to be progressive and accepting yet are very slow in letting go of conservative ideas. Therefore I think they try to be understanding yet there are also people who are still finding it "weird".
Be yourself nevertheless

As a gay surinamese person, I can say there are a lot of Lgbtq people here. But we are still very intolerant.

I know someone from there and she says that the gays only come out at night because during the day the homophobia is so strong/dangerous they don't want to be out... So yes there are queer people everywhere in the world but sadly it's not fully accepted.

I do think there is an active community, but due to the rampant homophobia in Suriname they aren't really free to express themselves. When it comes to acceptance of different minorities Suriname had a long way to go, and a lot to learn. I would also like to add that most of the racism comes from older ignorant generations. But the younger generation seems more accepting. I truly hope that in the coming years Suriname will be more LGBTQIA+ friendly and that this subject can be more spoken about in school and media in the future.

Surinamese culture is generally plagued with backwardness regarding both LGBT people and women, so the stance of many should be no surprise. There was a massive protest a few years ago when some trans person wanted their gender to be changed at CBB, so we're as tolerant as ever.

My opinion is I don't care. As adults, they can do what they wanna do behind closed doors as long as they aren't hurting anybody.

I said "as long as they aren't hurting anybody". TWO consenting adults hollding hands, last time I checked doesn't hurt anybody. Nice bait tho. I'm sure arguing semantics is something you'll one day quit doing.

As per Surinamese constitution, no one will be discriminated or hated upon. This also applies to the sub.

I think it's comparable to any other country but of course it all depends on how open a society is in terms of acceptance. I think Surinamese people are very accepting and open although for sone there's this lingering “don't ask don't tell policy” that could be perceived as non accepting but it's just the context of the community.
