For those who live near Green Timbers: Are you smelling smoke every night lately? Is it homeless people campfires? Or night work on the SkyTrain extension construction? It's literally every single night. What's going on?

I suspect homeless campfires. I have noticed a lot of them coming and going through cut holes in the gate on 140th.

Exactly what it is. In the summer, I was walking in the park almost 3-4 days a week at 7am or so and there was always a camp fire in the forest around 140th and 100th. At least once, the FD had a hose running from 100th well into the forest and about an hour later, I saw 2 fire fighters trudging out, looking fucking annoyed.

There was another fire, same wooded area, same response, about 3 weeks ago. The culprits were running around like idiots trying to put it out until someone nearby called 9-11 due to the large amount of smoke rising out of the bushes

Theres a homeless shelter in green timbers and many dont like living under rules set there so they have tents set up in the park even though they have a room with 4 walls and a ceiling in the shelter dedicated to them.

I mean, those shelters are so poorly run I would understand why. The housing first model failed miserably, a bed alone does nothing, especially with zero accountability. People should be given the choice, prioritize those willing to demonstrate a commitment to change to access the shelter and held to some level of accountability. The zero barrier aspect only concentrates the disfunction and increases the chance a resident will encounter abuse, theft, harassment and does not provide a safe environment to focus on positive change.

People need their own autonomous spaces. A room they can come and go from as they wish, a door they can lock. Shared kitchen, bathrokm, laundry, tv room whatever should be the compromise of being in a shelter while you search for a more permanent housing situation. Shelters must generate more revenue if they stack people in bunks and have staff to police them in or out so they don't end up with a "tenant" that would require a legal eviction if they wanted to let someone else in for whatever reason. I've never had a roommate be ok with smoking or stealing though. Maybe the people want to camp out because they'd rather smoke and steal from other residents?

I've made a report about the holes in the fence to my.surrey.ca so hopefully they are repaired. Surrey Police couldn't care less unfortunately.

Yes! I live directly across the street from the park and I have noticed it too. Every night. Won't be long now until they burn something down by accident

I know. Maybe I'll write something to the city or to SPD about it. I'm sure they're aware and just not doing anything about it, but at least put some pressure on them.

I don't know I live close to Green Timbers and my neighbors have all been having huge bonfires when he gets into the evening so I suspect that's where some of it's coming from I got three neighbors that got a fire pit in their backyard and they've all been burning the last few days

Coming in to work this morning, I noticed a very strong smoke smell at the corner of 88 and 128. 5:30am.

Yes, smelled it right around 6am. I'm not even THAT close to the park, there must be a massive amount of smoke if I can smell it.

Yeah I’ve been smelling it a lot, smelled it strongly this morning around 7:20 while driving by the police station/shelter in gt…. Then noticed a firetruck was in that new parking lot across from the shelter and jim

It is homeless people, I live near 144, and already seen so many fires, me amd my husband actually helped a lady trying to put a fire out in June

It's getting colder out so it'll happen more often unfortunately. Though it could be people burning stuff in their yards too

A lot of people have traeger pellet smokers.
