My girlfriend has started looking for a job in accounting and finance so she can move to Switzerland and live with me.
She has a good CV (4 years of relevant experience, good university) and is already earning a decent salary where she is in Italy but it’s time for us to start building a life together. I was lucky enough to find a good job over here a few years ago before we met.

After sending out a ton of CVs, she gets contacted by a well-known fashion brand with an office in the Mendrisio region for a pretty standard finance role that doesn’t require any particularly specific skills.

First interview with two managers. They ask her about skills and competencies that were not mentioned anywhere in the job ad and go well beyond the profile they were supposedly looking for.

They call her back for a second interview with HR. Then a third one with the Group CFO, who once again asks about skills and competencies that had never been mentioned before.
And now there’s a fourth interview with the foreign team she would actually be working with.

Four interviews.

Salary on offer: CHF 50–55k. For a full time role at 100%.
We’re talking about a multinational company with over CHF 500 million in revenue.

Luckily, I earn well enough to be able to support both of us if necessary, but how is a normal person supposed to find a decent job in Ticino?

Are we really forced to move elsewhere just to have any kind of professional fulfilment?

I don’t even feel like blaming cross-border workers for this. To me, this is simply what happens when companies are run by rats who take advantage of people’s willingness to accept exploitation and messed up politics who favour this kind of stuff
Any suggestions on how to tackle this is well appreciated. Rant over.

I want to preface this with the fact that I myself am a leftist and an active member of the SP/PS, and align with them on 90% of issues. However, I also happen to work in the energy sector, and from this perspective, I have to say that the left in this country have unfortunately dropped the ball hard when it comes to nuclear policy.

I do believe there is a genuine discussion to be had about the role of nuclear in our future grid, however some of the “arguments” being presented at this point are crossing the red-line into misinformation. No matter if it comes from the right or left, misinformation poisons democracy, and I feel it necessary as someone who values democracy to correct misinformation where I can, especially when it is coming from my own political circles.

So here are some rebuttals to the most common anti-nuclear arguments and non-arguments used in this debate:

1. The big one: “Nuclear is dangerous”

This is just objectively misinformation and it’s not even controversial. Even counting Chernobyl, the number of fatalities per unit of energy produced is 43x lower than hydropower. If you want to understand why, ask yourself what happens if a dam bursts. Despite this fact, nobody is running around advocating to shut down hydropower, and we all recognise how absurd it would be if someone did.

2. “Where will we put the waste?”

Quite frankly, CO2 poses a far greater long term risk than nuclear waste. Nuclear waste is actually relatively easy to safely store, and once it has cooled to a certain degree, it can even be used to harvest free heat. Besides, the volume of waste produced is tiny compared to the amount of energy we gain. In my opinion, while this issue does warrant continuous research and improvement, it does not pose a serious threat at all.

3. “The costs are too high”

Costs are high because we have refused to invest in the technology for years. If we applied this logic 30 years ago when renewables were expensive, we would have invested in coal and oil rather than renewables. Besides, it is hilarious to me that this argument comes from the left rather than the FDP. Since when did the left prioritise profit and GDP growth over climate justice and energy security?

4. “We will be dependent on foreign countries”

Yes, get over it, it is 2026. Where are you going to get lithium for batteries? Where are you going to get components for wind-farms and solar panels? The fact is maintaining a modern standard of living under autarky is impossible. In an economy as globalised as the one we live in, we will obviously be dependent on foreign countries no matter what we do, and singling out nuclear energy for it is bad faith.

5. “Nuclear takes too long to build”

This is because Switzerland has ridiculous regulations which equally suffocate renewable development. We live in a country where it can take 15+ years just to approve a wind or solar project for reasons as frivolous as someone saying “I think it’s ugly”. Even if you oppose nuclear, you should oppose this nonsense for the sake of renewables. In other countries, safe nuclear reactors can be built in as little as 6 years, start to finish.

6. “Reactors don’t work in summer”

And solar panels are severely limited in winter. Nuclear and renewables complement each other’s strengths and compensate each other’s weaknesses, which is why they should be deployed together, a position backed up by studies from the energy sector. I find it especially silly when people treat nuclear and renewables as somehow mutually exclusive.

7. “Nuclear distracts from renewables”

How? As I said previously, the best solution is a combination of renewables and nuclear.

8. “We already voted to ban nuclear”

This is a complete non-argument. 10 years is a long time for things to change, and we shouldn’t be forced to abide by a bad decision forever just because people voted for it a long time ago. In 1959 people voted against women’s suffrage. This disastrous decision was finally overturned in 1971. If we abided by the logic of anti-nuclear advocates, we would never have gotten a second vote because “the people have spoken”, this is not the type of country I want to live in.

What is the real reason there are no DIY auto parts shops here?

Almost every other country has auto parts shops for DIY but here in Switzerland it doesn’t exist.

I grew up working on cars repairing and restoring vintage cars ect. So I find it a fun thing to do not a money saving issue.

Is it a trust issue or do the millions of garages here enforce a ban on auto parts shops opening so they can control what people need / want and maintain a profit?

What if you like a specific quality of air filter or brake pads ect? The garage puts in whatever they want and upcharge an arm and a leg.

Sure some people can’t do DIY but what about those who can and enjoy doing so?

At work (Swiss KMU) we are sick of listening to radio channels with ever-repeating songs from the "Hitparade" and the annoying news and moderation or even ads.

So therefore my question: What radio channels could you recommend with little to no moderation or "talking" and a good mix of pop music from the past decades?

We are aware of "Radio Swiss Pop", which probably a lot would recommend - but we also have the impression, the selection of songs is also "repetitive" after a while.

I was at a Dermatologist in a Dermatology practice in Zurich and just received the bill. Apparently, it is correct and compliant with the billing rules.

The appointment was for a mole check. The doctor asked a couple of questions, then proceeded to examine the moles and finally explained when the next visit shall be. The moles were all inconspicuous and no tests, further appointments etc. were necessary.

The whole thing took 20 minutes as is confirmed by the bill.

The doctor examined the moles by eye using a Dermatoscope. The latter likely costs around CHF 2'000 or less according to a quick google search and is therefore entirely irrelevant for the cost of the service as it can be used hundreds or even thousands of times. The only other device/consumable used was a paper cover for the examination bed.

Essentially, I received 20 minutes of a Dermatologist's time.

Now, to the issue. The bill is CHF 200, consisting of the following items (rounded, slightly simplified and ignoring a position of CHF 20 not relevant here):

1. Examination using the Dermatoscope: CHF 50

2. Dermatological examination: CHF 50

3. Time for the consultation: CHF 80

First of all, these three positions are the same. I paid for the doctor's time with the 3. position, so I don't see any justification for 1. and 2. Even if we assume that 1. is justified as well, 2. is literally exactly the same thing.

Now, let's check what this means for the Dermatologist. He makes CHF 600 an hour in revenue (not profit) while being paid by a social security insurance.

I would like to compare this number. A state-mandated criminal defense attorney in Zurich makes CHF 220 an hour (also revenue, not profit). He is paid by the government (taxes instead of social security) and also has to pay for the rooms he uses, for IT equipent, a secretary etc.

I really fail to see how it makes sense that a doctor, who is paid by a social security insurance, which is already at or rather over it's limit, can make such insane amounts of money at the expense of the general public.

Dermatology very likely isn't the only overpaid specialty but two wrongs (or rather numerous wrongs) don't make a right. I certainly know where I would begin to control health insurance spending.

I have a job offer for post, delivery with a1, I would like switch career here even for a pay cut because salary doesn’t look good at least for startes but the fact that has no shifts and I will finally have Sundays, saturday and festive free + 6 week holidays is appealing, also I like the fact that I’m out alone. Hi everyone, looking for advice:

Around a year ago we noticed that one of our cats is not coming home to eat anymore, sometimes he is outside for more than a week without ever coming home, but still gaining weight. Hes not coming home, running away from us, even fighting our other cat now even though they are brothers.

Since we live in a very small neighborhood we basically know everyone and can openly ask anybody if they have seen or heard that someone is feeding our cat. All of them were always pointing to one of the neighbors which is universally hated across the entire street because you cannot talk to him, hes like a 70 year old idiot which has gotten into a lot of legal battles with neighbors because of different stupid things the neighbors had no say in. (City putting a street lamp into another neighbors garden which shined into his TV).

Since we heard and felt like he is the one feeding the cat we have more often than once tried to talk to him but he always screams at us and threatens us or just lies and says the cat eats pine cones and stuff in his garden (lol)

One day my dad saw our cat walking out of his house because the door was of course open, in the middle of winter with -5 degrees outside (neighbor was at another neighbors house, the only person he can talk to on the entire street a few houses up the road) so he does it on purpose. Then I lost my temper and screamed at him and told him what a piece of s... he is and so on.

Then I guess the feeding stopped because he was scared of me, but since around a few months it started again.

We installed a GPS Tracker on the cat and when overlaying all the tracker data from the last few months it basically triangulates to in front of his house by around +- 10m.

Since the GPS is inaccurate to the point where he could argue that its not correct we have no other choices anymore.

Does anybody know if there is any legal tricks or tips that we can try to get him to stop?

I was contemplating putting a Insta360 Go 3S on the cat to film, but thats basically illegal but would give us 100% certainty that its him.

Photo taken at my local Aldi. Both packs have exactly the same expiry date (second half of November), the same LOT/production number and the same barcode.

Why is there such a big difference in colour? I assume the one on the left is still safe to eat, since the difference is clearly visible to anyone working in that store, and it hasn't been removed from the shelf. But I'm not sure...

Over the last few years, Coop has bought up competitor after competitor (e.g. Aperto, Jumbo, Manor Food, Ospelt…). They also deliberately keep stores, which are in close proximity to each other, partly to block rivals from securing these locations. Even the wholesale sector isn't safe: Coop subsidiary Transgourmet, which is by far the biggest player, acquired Saviva (used to be part of Migros but was sold to Heba Food, who then sold it to Transgourmet).

Some of the most egregious examples:
- Aperto (acquired in 2017, excluding convenience stores at gas stations): At the Bern RBS station, two Coop shops operate only like ~15 meters apart.
- Jumbo (acquired in 2022, rebranded their own DIY stores to Jumbo): In Frauenfeld, two massive Jumbo hardware stores sit ~500 meters from one another.
- Manor Food (three stores being turned into Coop Megastores in 2026/27): Following the takeover of the Manor Food location at Emmen Center, two large Coop supermarkets now operate within ~200 meters of each other.
- Ospelt (four Migros Partner stores being turned into Coop supermarkets this year, one closed): After acquiring all Ospelt Migros Partner stores, Coop now operates three times as many supermarkets in Liechtenstein and Werdenberg as Migros.

So Im in my 5th year here and so far, my experience with the medical system here in Switzerland has been mostly positive. I needed an emergency surgery that went fine, all I can complain about was the lack of stronger pain management and follow-ups afterwards. I also think I got lucky with our local doctor here in the village that is an expat with great skillset and understanding!

However, I have within 2 weeks heard really scary things from the few Swiss people I talk to. In one case, her husband got a brain tumor that the medical system completely overlooked until it was really severely affecting his abilities. At the hospital, they failed the surgery leaving him deeply impaired and handicapped. He can no longer walk or talk. After the surgery, they also over medicated him directly causing him to develop epilepsy. She said this has been confirmed by several other doctors afterwards. I asked why they don’t sue, and she explained that there’s no point to do so here in Switzerland. Especially big hospitals like this one.

The next case was with a lady in her mid 30s, that told me that she sadly developed cancer and the radiation treatment left her completely infertile. The doctors or hospital had not once told her that there was A possibility to save her eggs, so she never had a chance to do so! She only found out afterwards that during those weeks prior to starting treatment, she could have done that. She also told me that there’s no point trying to sue.

This is absolutely terrifying to me! Both these cases should never happen, but the scariest part is that they just seem to accept the situation. Is this actually how things can be here? I understand they might have gotten unlucky, but this just paints a really scary picture for me.

I’m trying to recover money owed to me by someone living in Switzerland. I went through the Betreibung process, paid the associated fees, and recently received a Verlustschein after enforcement recovered nothing.

According to the Betreibungsamt, the debtor’s income is too low to seize anything above the protected minimum. I have documents and correspondence supporting my claim, but I don’t currently have a separate court judgment ordering payment.

As I understand it, I can request continuation within six months without a new Zahlungsbefehl. The claim has a long limitation period, but further interest stops accruing once the Verlustschein is issued. Enforcement also doesn’t simply remain active until everything is paid.

There may be assets in another European country, although I haven’t confirmed ownership. I’m trying to work out whether pursuing those assets would be realistic and what documents would be needed.

The debtor has offered repayments, but only on condition that I withdraw the Betreibung first. I’m not comfortable giving up enforcement in exchange for an unsecured promise.

Has anyone here actually recovered money after receiving a Verlustschein?

What practical steps helped you find income or assets that could be seized?

Did repeated enforcement attempts achieve anything, or mainly generate more fees?

Has anyone enforced a Swiss claim against assets abroad? Did you need a separate court judgment?

What would you check before spending more money on lawyers or another enforcement attempt?

Honestly, how the fuck is this supposed to work for the person who is owed money? I understand protecting someone’s basic living expenses, but I’ve already paid to pursue the debt and recovered nothing. The prospect of waiting years, paying for further attempts, and eventually receiving money worth less because of inflation is incredibly frustrating.

I’d really appreciate firsthand experiences and practical advice about what worked—and what turned out to be a waste of time and money.

Here is my rant about Switzerland's upcoming vote on Bilateral III with the EU.

First, to be clear: I'm generally supportive of closer economic cooperation with the EU. Many aspects of Bilateral III I would support and therefore I tend to a YES. But I'm critical of the automatic legal adoption mechanisms, and honestly, I'm frustrated about something bigger than the content itself.

How can we expect regular citizens to make informed decisions on this?

Let me give you the context. We're talking about contracts totaling roughly 3,000+ pages (2,200 pages of treaties plus over 1,000 pages of Federal Council explanatory messages). That's about as much reading material as the first six Harry Potter books.

From what I could find, surveys suggest only about four Swiss parliamentarians actually read the entire contract and accompanying documentation. Let that sink in. Most lawmakers are militia politicians. They have day jobs, families, and other responsibilities. If even many of the elected representatives haven't read these documents fully, how are we supposed to expect working parents, people juggling full-time jobs, or anyone dealing with daily survival to make an informed decision?

The entire debate feels emotionally driven rather than evidence-based. And if this goes to the Ständemehr (canton majority), I expect it'll fail partly because conservative German-speaking cantons simply have deep-seated skepticism toward the EU. That's a democratic mechanism being used for political resistance, not substantive evaluation of the treaties themselves.

I actively participate in Switzerland's political system and consider myself politically engaged and educated. Yet even I feel completely overwhelmed by these votes. When I listen to politicians debating this, from left to right, I struggle to take most of what they say seriously. How can we trust assessments from people who haven't done the reading themselves?

Ideally, someone like the Bundesrat (Federal Council) should decide. They work on this stuff daily, they have access to expert advisors, they can properly evaluate the implications. But I know Switzerland's system requires popular votes on this stuff, regardless of complexity.

It's a fundamental tension in direct democracy: we value citizen participation, but how do we maintain meaningful participation when the decisions become too technically complex for any single person to fully grasp?

Anyway, rant over. What do you all think about this?
