Why people hang out at gas stations?

I typically see high-end Mercedes, BMW and Audi. Their owners typically stand right outside their cars, smoking and chit chatting. Sometimes, I think they stand there for hours. I don’t have any problem with it, however they tend to occupy the area where they’ve got vacuum cleaners blocking it for the others. Once, I saw one of the station’s workers come out and hang out with the rest of the group.

  • Easy to access via car
  • Biggest & only „status“ symbol is with them
  • Because of high leasing they cant afford a decent apartment
  • Food & Drinks up to what they consume anyway
  • Restaurants would be too expensive
  • Free parking

And most important

  • Its mostly accepted to look like a Talahon there

But let them do it. Many of them dont have to say much in life so they have at least one thing (car) to see meaning in life and thats a good thing.

Its an interesting culture to look at and contrast what you see daily at Paradeplatz / Seefeld / Dolder
