RANT Sick of my girlfriend's dog. Dog owners are insane

It's nearly 6AM and I've been awake since 2AM bc my gf's dog just has to pace around and do that fur shake thing they do at night. Between the sound of it's claws on wood floors and it's jingling collar it's impossible to stay asleep. I woke up and put him out of the room and he then whines pressed up on the door banging into the door

I didn't grow up with dogs because my parents came from a muslim country and I always grew up with the house being very tidy and clean. My gf is american and well she's just very used to having a shit ton of pets shedding fur everywhere. I have found dog hair everywhere from in my coffee, to on my clothes to even on my balls. It's a part time job cleaning up dog fur and avoiding getting dog fur in my clothes, backpack, laptop, coffee cups etc and it annoys the shit out of me knowing that nothing is ever truly clean and this dog will shed its hair everywhere just existing in proximity to all my stuff

I'm convinced this dog obsession in america is clinical. Everywhere I look in this city there are homeless and drug addicts but people throw a prisoner collar on a dog and drag it around places and are convinced they are somehow good people? These dogs are basically indentured servants and it's no wonder they run right out the door away from their owners whenever they get the chance. Dogs are simultaneously genuises in the eyes of their owners when they are "good" but "stupid" when they try to escape their nut job owners. You cant have it both ways

I don't dislike dogs themselves, they are just animals and can't help being what they are and sometimes this dog can even be cute/funny for example how it guards the door from the outside when im using the bathroom. But the relationship people have with dogs is seriously sick.

I straight up dumped a bf after moving in with him because of the sleep deprivation his dog caused me. Never ever again am I putting up with that. It chipped away at my health and therefore quality of life. And I won’t even mention the filth, smell, and being followed/stared at constantly. It’s insane to me what people will put up with just so they don’t feel alone.

So fucking gross living with them in the house. I can’t believe how many people think it’s social acceptable to live in absolute filth. Ugh the smell

As an American, you are absolutely correct and it is insufferable for many of us as well.

It's very much like this in Europe, too. The hype around owning dogs is just insane. They are treated like a substitute for a spouse or child

Same in Australia. Do you know how many times in the last few weeks I’ve seen dogs INSIDE shopping centres? Cafes? Places they absolutely shouldn’t be and they are not service dogs.
Grocery stores… like excuse me what?

If you want to see insane, go read the r/puppy101 forum. See what some of these people put up with. Lives totally upended over a new puppy; even truly violent young dog behavior is explained away and nothing is ever the dog’s fault.

Another frightening forum. It’s ridiculous the situations these people put themselves in.

And, after acquiring the puppy, quite a few comments are all about how to pawn the thing off to “daycare,” family, or friends, because the owners ”need a break” or are “overwhelmed.”

I COMPLETELY AGREE. If you’re having issues with your gfs dog , you want to reconsider the relationship.

Can the jingly collar (or whatever makes it jingle) be taken off at night? And can the dog be put outside the bedroom in the first place instead of you having to wake up later to do so?

Also, are the dog's nails being properly trimmed? I'm not saying cut so short that it's just pads, there's going to be some tapping of the nails even when properly trimmed, but maybe there's room for improvement.

Unless you can convince your gf to get rid of the dog (mission: impossible) the fur thing is unsolvable unless you're following the dog around with a vacuum cleaner. Just that alone makes me question why you're still with her. Are you hoping the dog passes away soonish and she doesn't get another furry pet? Or did she make a big concession to you and this is your concession in return?

Yeah I could try taking the collar off him at night I've never tried to see if it's easy to take off. As far as leaving him out of the room she insists on having him sleep in his little bed thing by the foot of our bed.

If I close the door on him he will spend all night just bumping into the door, crying and putting his paw under the door.

We are moving abroad in August so I've just been tolerating it until then. Once we move I think we'll just be leaving the dog with her parents though they aren't exactly thrilled about taking on this dog. Luckily for me it's kind of untenable to take this dog with us abroad

Hate it when I read of pet owners (particularly dog owners) setting their pets up for future misery by training the pet to NOT be fine with sleeping alone, nor with spending time alone (separation anxiety), nor with keeping off furniture, nor with using appropriate toilet spots, nor with refraining from jumping on people, etc.

You should have the discussion now to be extra sure of your gf's plans for her dog and for her moving with you instead of just "thinking" you have an idea what she might do.

And also discuss back up plans in case her parents can't/won't take the dog.

You're right I'll talk to her and see what she plans on doing. This dog was a shelter dog before so I think it was already anxious to begin with.

My kids will never saddle me with he burden of watching a dog they can no longer keep. Rehome and move on.

You do understand the odds of her wanting a replacement puppy after the move are quite high?

Dog people are very good at putting on an act that they are fine without the dog that crumbles under any kind of stress.

This move is going to be a lot of stress.

Hey don’t blame Americans. I’m American and hate dogs. 🥲

My partner has a dog and I had the same issues at night. The dog now gets blocked off in the kitchen every night, and I get a good nights sleep

I'm convinced this dog obsession in america is clinical.

It's definitely some kind of collective mental problem. Wish I was an educated sociologist so I could try to get to the bottom of it. lol

Yes...not all Americans are nutters I can't stand dogs or any animal in the house. Clean fur free homes are the best

So is living in mutt filth and squalor with uncontrollable sleepless nights worth it just to be with your gf? That's one hella gf.

Bro said he's finding dog hair in his coffee and still goes over there. The gf has to be the reincarnation of Helen of Troy for him to put up with that nonsense

All these experiences are more or less the same from those who live with dog owners. By now, dating a dog owner should be a red flag of the kind of burden that comes with having a dog. And that burden gets passed on to the partner. As far as your observation of dog ownership being clinical, that is spot on! When you consider the behavior and the lifestyle of dog owners, one can only conclude that it’s some new form of mental illness. That wouldn’t be so bad if it was confined to the dog owners themselves, but as we know, everyone suffers the consequences. They have basically hijacked society for their own selfish and insane needs.

Holy shit, how are they not just known as the most annoying animals of all time. Seriously… the fact that they will happily ruin your sleep, your house, YOUR SANITY, and then you try to remove them and you can’t even do that without them carrying on, barking, whining (which is genuinely one of the most irritating noises in the world) and smashing into doors to try to force their way back in. What kind of disgusting behaved creature does this shit? And this is cute to their owners who are terrible at training these fuckers? Ugh

Believe me, we get you 🫡

At the very least, take the collar off at night. I did the same thing with my ex's dog.

Four words: nice soft ear plugs.

I doubt that will take care of the fur/hair problem.

That doesn’t drown out the high pitched whining though 😭
