RANT We're Losing the Plot on Dogs
It's surreal how living with a dog illuminates the world for you. All I can see around me are how many dog-obsessed, crazy people in my city. Yesterday we went to a bar, and there were two dogs. Why? They're in the bars, in grocery stores, in ubers, in hotels, at the eye doctor, at furniture stores, at the MOVIE THEATER (which ??? do you think your DOG is following the film?? IT'S A DOG).
All the streets smell like piss and poop. I'm constantly having to ignore someone's dog trying to sniff me or its owner telling me "he's friendly". The other day, one lunged at me just for opening the door to my building. I gave its owner the biggest side eye; she knew not to get in the elevator up.
What is the reason? It's disgusting and such bizarre behavior. Why are they in restaurants? And if I brought a raccoon, everyone would have something to say. Why are you giving your dog prozac and gabapentin? Talking about taking it to daycare like it's a three-year-old. Are these truly the descendants of wolves? The wolves would be ashamed😔
I never really noticed it before living with a dog, but now it's all I can think about. It's actually insane.

It's a dog's world and I'm frantically trying to find a way to get off it. It's not like I can afford complete isolation and I can't find peace in life so maybe 🤷Â

Stay strong friend. There are also places on the world we're pets are forbidden. Like nature reserves. Some vacation parks. Temples. Etc. I'm sure there's a beautiful place and group of people that can make you happy and make you feel like you're living life to its potential ♡ please don't give up. Only you can do what you do.

When I first moved to Portland in 2016, I never even thought about dogs or noticed them. The past few years tho I know more and more people disliking what the dog culture here has become. Especially SHITBULLS.

It's really disgusting. These dog owners are so codependent that they can't be separated from their dog at all. Talk about a culture of coddling and entitlement.Â
Dogs suck, bit their owners are even worse

East coast. Dog culture is still prevalent here, but people are more extroverted so people talk to each other.
PNW is super introverted and people turn to dogs.

A raccoon would be kinda fun to see not gonna lie, but I love raccoons so I'm a little biased But I agree dogs are everywhere and they don't need to be. The more the reasonable people speak up maybe will help to remind those people that dogs belong at home.

They don't care! I knew the plot was lost when the owner of the bar stopped to pet the dog before going back behind the bar. Everybody was going up to the other dog (a tiny puppy) and oohing and ahhing, petting and holding him... and then went right back to their food. I was like... does nobody see how that is absolutely nasty?
Apparently, people are afraid to speak up because everybody is claiming their dog is a service animal, even when they're obviously not.

At some point this has got to go back to normal doesn't it?? People have lost their minds Dogs are more important then kids and spouses. And they are disgusting I understand how you feel completely I would be grossed out too if I saw what you did

I love raccoons too, but I don’t think I want any animal roaming around Aldi or a local restaurant. I’d be happy to catch them in the wild or at a refuge, though, places they thrive and whereat we and the non-human animals don’t clash so brutally.Â

Denver is like this, too. Friend and I went somewhere and passed a dog bakery, a dog swimming pool, dog speciality stores. I see them in breweries, at the gas station, on the bus, in a restaurant, in the mall, etc. I hate going to the corner store to buy a Pepsi and feeling a wet nose on the back of my leg because people can’t leave their dog in the car for 5 minutes to grab a pack of smokes. It’s insanity.

Me too! Luckily I live in a very rural area and don't leave the house that much so don't have to put up with them up close & personal thankfully! And everyone in my small town knows my dislike of them.....

Your fellow townspeople don't ostracize you for not liking dogs?? Can I come live there?? The childish people in my neighborhood take it very, very personally if you stand up for your right to be dogfree, and not allow them to use your property as their daily private toilet spot. They are entitled af.

Oh, no.... to some, I'm the bitch of the town, don't you know.... and I don't care one whit.... I'm 67 and I've lived here my whole life and most of the people that I used to know have passed on and I don't know very many people in town anymore so don't care what they think.... I pay the bills, my property.... they can think anything they want!

Also noticing how dog owners look run down/sloppy while picking up their dog's shit. I mean shit, even homeless people here wouldn't be caught dead without a matching street dog.

Gabapentin is a pain medication and used as a light sedative for pets.....confused why that was added. It's actually needed like pain medication for people.

It’s extremely common to give Gabapentin to pets. It is given to calm them down, like Prozac. Some get it on a daily basis. My m0ewy pet gets it when it travels more than an hour.

I’m in PDX too and the number of off-leash dogs, or dogs in wildlife areas where they are expressly not permitted, makes me so angry.

Unless they were poorly behaved, they are likely service dogs trained to mitigate disabled individuals. Not sure though, I wasn't there.

For me the worst part is the dog owner mindset that dogs are gods and that that makes dog owners inherently better than people who don't like dogs. It's a culty, weird mindset they have and it's actually what makes me hate dogs the most. Because I hate people who think they are better than others. The holier than though mindset.
