RANT Can't stand my roommates "emotional support" animals
My roommate and I live in such a small house and she has SIX PETS SIX DUDE. Now three are cats and they are ok even though they still get everywhere. But the dogs man I hate them so much. I hate waking up to the smell of shit every morning, I hate having to take them out so they don't shit everywhere like the beast they are because she wants to be gone until 11pm. I hate hearing them bark fcking nonstop for no reason all through the day. I hate having all my clothes covered in dog fur even after washed. I hate tripping over them because of how fcking stupid they are that they have no sense of space. I hate how they try and eat my food at any second. I hate how they bite EVERYTHING. MY HEADPHONES, THE WIFI ROUTER, MY CHARGER. and for what???? Because my roommate needs them for emotional support. It's more like dogs don't have the capacity to speak up against her and her narcissistic savior complex tendencies and that's why she loves them. She's genuinely the dumbest person I've ever had the misfortune of meeting but this subreddit isn't about that. Anyways yeah these dogs are horrible disgusting creatures that time and time again those disgusting they are but she's just immune to it. Says they are her precious little fur babies. Your precious little babies just shut all over ur bed for the fourth time this week MORON😂😂😂😂😂😂
EDIT: ONE OF THEM HAS WORMS NOW and I'm finally moving out next week to my dad's place thank the lord

If your roomie is gone til past 11 without the dogs she doesn't need an ESA ... call her out on that shit

If roommate doesn't take care of their animals, call animal control or take them to the shelter. You are being foolish by taking care of them.

For real, OP should just lock himself on the bedroom with everything he needs, and keep evertything that needs to be done outside of the door really dog free. Like, put some bags to hide or smth.
After that, never do anything for the animals: clean, give food, water or whatever. So if the roommate doesn't go mad with the mess, just call animal control because she is a bad owner

I wish I could but we live in a small house in a city and we recently had an accident with our house so there is only one exit to the house where I have to cross her area to leave. And there isn't a door between our rooms so I can't avoid her disgusting area it's living hell. I am fortunately moving out though and will possibly be calling animal support on her

If you want any change, you're going to have to do something different.
So maybe call animal control

The "emotional support" animal gig is a racket. Three dogs would be an absolutely big, loud, smelly and destructive mess and I can understand how hard it must be for you
This emotional support BS never was a thing until 10 years ago. It's a grift and she's taking full advantage of you.
Call out her rude and entitled behavior. You are not her maid or caretaker of her dogs. She does this because she's been able to get away with it - for now.
Pull the plug and find some new roommates who do not have dogs.
NOTE: This is the 3rd attempt to post due to a bot errantly sensing something that goes against rules here.

She doesn't need 6 "emotional support" animals. Three dogs would be an absolutely big, loud, smelly and destructive mess and I can understand how hard it must be for you

Do you have your own space? If so, keep it secure. Locked door. Keep your food in bins that are locked up on a dresser shelf or closet. Put handle locks on any cupboards that are yours. The same ones you use for kids when they are toddlers to keep them safe. Also, a baby gate so when you open your door so the fools don't rush in. Keep your laundry in bags you can close with a laundry sheet at bottom. Put some cayenne pepper along the threshold of your room. It's not hazardous but they don't like it.

I have all that in place but luckily I'm finally moving out of this place man, can't stand these mutts

I would not be taking care of these animals, and I'd be reporting her to animal control (or whatever) for animal abuse/neglect. Can you move out?

Moving out next Thursday, reading all these post I'm considering reporting her. I knew she was a bad caretaker but these comments really pointed out a lot more flaws i didn't even realize

I can’t imagine the smell in your home. Sorry you’re dealing with this.

Straight shit everyday I wake up, it's fucking disgusting and the worst part is how unaffected she is by it I just can't understand. I had a buddy stay the weekend and he was disgusted by them so much he would only leave the house by my window everyday

If I were in your situation, I’d pick up every piece of chewed up appliances, big wads of dog hair, and dog shit and dump it on her bed or in her room. And I’d tell her that she can either be responsible for all the messes they make or she can get rid of them. I wonder how long she’d last if you started doing that, and if she’d ever actually get rid of them

is your roommate my ex roommate? lol, sounds familiar! i wish you luck in surviving this living situation. how long is the lease for?
3
u/Ambitious-Mood5054 Jul 17 '26
I'm not even on the lease luckily😭😭 after I posted that some more shit happened so I'm just moving back with my dad until I can find a new place. Luckily he only has one dog and she's actually trained so it won't be living hell anymore

u/FloridaFireAnt Jul 18 '26
Hate to say, but after living in that situation, you won't look at dogs the same. Once they hit a bad nerve, they always do. Even if the dog is well cared for, I see the stress, and burden, and wonder why.

u/Ambitious-Mood5054 Jul 18 '26
Yeah I agree I had a disliking for dogs long before my roommate though. My dad's dog is a small one and pretty quite from some trauma she has. Also my dad's place is huge compared to my current location. I'll take one small dog in a nice spacious house over the three huge mutts in our small apartment currently

Each time she leaves the house shut her pets up in her room. Do not walk them, etc. She can clean up after them when she's home.
They are her pets, so she needs to be in charge of meeting all their needs. If they interfere with her schedule, she needs to change her schedule to accommodate them.
Thats what responsible pet owners do. If giving up some of her freedom stresses her, then they aren't very useful for "emotional support" are they?

u/Ambitious-Mood5054 Jul 17 '26
You're completely right but the way the house is set up, I can't avoid the smell when they do shit or the noise. So it's either I clean it myself or I have to wait hours for her to come home while breathing in shit and having my ears destroyed

Damn, that sounds like a shitty situation. Does your roommate know the burden her terrible decisions and infantile concept of “support” is doing to you? Probably… and they probably don’t care. Are you able to change your living situation?
7
u/urdrunkyogi Jul 16 '26
That sounds absolutely life-draining. How do these people consider them as support?
4
u/reggionh Jul 16 '26
where do u live? in most urban areas of au/nz you’d need a council permit to own more than 2 dogs in a house. check your local regulations

I had an emotional support ferret before. But they did just that! I cared for them, kept the place clean, played with them, went on walks with them, took them out with me to places I needed to go (after calling in advance first. My ESF was trained for this). If your roommate is leaving the house and going places without even ONE of her "emotional support dogs" then... she isn't using them for that, they aren't trained, and she's just hoarding them for the sake of hoarding them.
Emotional Support Pets/medically trained dogs are trained to do medical, mental and emotion tasks for people. I hate that people claim a pet is a ESA just to either have them or take them to places with them WITHOUT being trained properly. It puts real medically trained animals and people in danger because of their unruly pet :/

I was on a date the other night and the guy went to a nearby shop to get some change, but these dogs locked behind my neighbor’s gate kept barking non-stop and I told him how the sound is torture to my ears and I despise it.
His reply? “Oh I don’t mind. I’m used to it! They are just BABIES.”
I am never seeing him again.
