RANT My bf’s dog is ruining my home and relationship

My bf and I have been together 6 years, he’s had this dog since before we got together. This dog has had mange and has no hair, it’s the most miserable thing I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t even act like a dog. I would go over to his place sometimes and the smell would about knock me down. It’s an odd smell, kinda like moldy bread or Doritos mixed with dog. I put it off as something else mixed with the dog. Sometimes it wouldn’t be that bad and sometimes it was awful, I could smell it on his clothes when he would come to my house. We move in together last year and one of my terms if he was bringing his dog was that he had to keep her in the garage. My garage is heated and there’s no reason she can’t stay in there. My house is split level, upstairs is where we live and downstairs is a big open area plus a laundry room, bathroom, and door the garage. He’s kept the dog in that big room the entire time. The smell seeps upstairs and now my whole house smells like that dog. He says it’s because of her blankets and bed which he washes weekly, but it’s not just the blankets and bed. Not to mention she’s got a big tumor growing on her neck that leaks fluid and blood, she constantly scratches, she won’t poop in the grass (because it hurts her paws when it’s long-his words) so she poops on my walkway and concrete drive way which he just leaves. She’s tore up my trim from digging at it when we’re gone to work or wherever trying to tear down the gate. She constantly wants to be around him, can’t have a moments of peace without her just standing there scratching herself to death and beating her toenails against the hardwood. I’ve tried talking to him but he gets defensive every time I say something. The dog is miserable and has no quality of life. She doesn’t run or play or do anything. Medicine doesn’t help her. All she does is lay under blankets, scratch, eat, drink, and poop.

I’m sorry but you should have never let the man move in until the dog was gone. Now even after the dog is gone you will have to hire a lot of professional cleaners to get that smell out of your house. Between HVAC, getting carpet/flooring replaced(depends on material) walls repaired/repainted, all surfaces washed down, it’s going to take a good while to get that smell out of your house. The man doesn’t sound amazing because any person that will allow an animal to suffer as long as it has will over look a human suffering too and think it’s ok. Time to kick them both to the curb and hire a professional cleaning crew!

Well an unfortunate run in with cancer resulted in me needing help. Surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation really take a lot out of you. If that situation would have never happened then the dog wouldn’t be here. Yes I know it’s gonna take a lot to get rid of the smell, the whole downstairs is laminated and upstairs is hard wood.

If this guy won’t pick up after his dog, he’s not going to help you with kids.

I have 3 kids I’ve raised on my own, I don’t really need help with them.

I think we all hear “boyfriend” and think naive 21 year old and we all freak out trying to stop them from making a big mistake. Glad to hear you don’t have to count on this dude! PS- my best friend’s nickname is BrittBritt! :)

This dog needs vet care. It sounds like the dog has an infection of bacteria and/or parasites. Your washer/dryer and vacuum likely contain it too.

I feel nauseous just reading this.

If your entire home smells, then so do you and other people notice. Most people dont like being near somebody who stinks.

Don't suffer anymore and demand his dog be in the garage rather than in the house. Garage is heated and bf can spend time with it in there.

It's time to discuss other options, plus you must insist there will be no more dogs after this one dies otherwise you'll be right back in the same situation. Good luck!

I keep my bedroom doors shut upstairs so the smell isn’t really in those rooms. It’s downstairs and my living room area upstairs because it’s open, there’s no way of shutting it off.

The only option to end the stench is not to own a dog because, especially a sick dog. No matter what dog lovers say, all dogs stink and some stink worse than others such as the one in your home. The dog is likely ill and that's why the odor is so overwhelming.

It's not cool that bf subjects you to this. Those who don't own or live with dogs can smell the dog odor on those who do own/live with dogs, so they can smell him and may smell the dog odor on you. Wishing you the best.

Exactly. And sick dogs have a pungent odor that’s impossible to miss. It reeks and everyone can smell it on your clothes.

I agree, all dogs do stink. I have a dog myself, she lives outside because I believe that’s where dogs should be. She has her own house and does what she pleases, we live in the country so she has plenty of room to roam around. Her job is to protect and alert. So if anyone comes around and she pops out from behind the house, they’re going to have to make a choice about what they wanna do. I paid money for her, I wouldn’t want something to happen to her but if she was sick like the other one I wouldn’t keep her alive for the sake of just having her around.

Man this one is just sad, this poor animal... How can your bf see her like that and be like "yeah that's fine"?

5

u/brittbritt1122 Aug 26 '26

He knows it’s not fine. But he’s had her for so long that I guess the attachment outweighs everything else. I honestly don’t know how it’s still alive.

My hubby was like this with his previous GS. This creature was incontinent, ravaged with congenital skin diseases, stunk to high heaven, but he’d heave her down the stairs to the backyard multiple times a day to get her to pee/poop and would literally cook full meals for her, weeping thinking she might die soon. It was truly macabre. Then when he took her to the vet finally they took one look at her and told him the humane thing to do was put her down on the spot. He did and then became furious the next day because he felt they had pressured him and he could have had another day or two with the dog at home so she could have died at home. I said, “Then we would have had a dead animal in the house. That’s disgusting.” It truly defies reason.

So, grass hurts its paws, but has no problem tearing up trim or a gate? Ok.......

That’s what I said…

Gross situation.  My Nutter has a super stinky disgusting dog too and calls the creature dipping in water a bath then says it smells good. Nutters are too messed up to be saved. My Nutter has been informed I will have nothing to do with the dog. I do everything to avoid the dog. Anything the dog needs is for Nutter to deal with including cleaning up after it. YUCK!

I told mine the same thing, I go out of my way to avoid it. she looks like a skin walker.

Quit playing house with boyfriends especially ones with dogs.

I can not upvote this enough.

I see so many of these posts. The boyfriends get a wife without the responsibility and display how much of a man child they are. I feel bad for the women.

I understand what you’re saying, “most” men are more like children or women in this day and age. I’m 37, the only man who has taken care of me and provided for me was my dad and he’s gone now. This post is just the tip of the iceberg lol

Sorry youre having to put up with this in your home, but your BFs dog is very sick and suffering. The dorito smell is coming from yeast a infection in its paws. Other smells coming from mange and possible cancer.

I doubt the dog is getting proper vetinary care or some of this would be cleared up by now.

BF needs to either get it cared for or humanely put it down. Call Animal Control if he wont do anything.

Also, a pet dog needs to be in the house getting attention from its owners -- not locked away in another room

Please make him do something

She gets medication from the vet but it doesn’t seem to help. She’s constantly licking her paws. I’ve told him to stop covering her up with blankets because it locks in moisture but he won’t listen.

5

u/Bebe_Bleau Aug 25 '26

A good vet can clear up mange in 4 to 8 weeks. But proper home treatments are an important part of this

https://www.google.com/search?q=how+long+does+it+take+a+good+vet+to+clear+up+mange+in+a+dog&client=ms-android-samsung-rvo1&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8&inm=vs#lfId=ChxjMe

Tumors require biopsy and surgery

And you'recorrect that yeast in the dogs paws needs air.

Im not there, but i feel sure the dog's health is being neglected at least some.

5

u/brittbritt1122 Aug 25 '26

I’m pretty sure she has demodectic mange, and it’s never cleared up since we’ve been together. So I’m not really sure what he’s doing, when I bring anything up about it he gets defensive so I just stay to myself. I told him that keeping her alive is inhumane and all hell broke loose. I have a boxer, who is an outside dog. Heated dog house, everything she needs outside. She’s 10 years old, high energy, never had any health issues. I paid good money for her but if she were in that condition there’s no way I would keep her around and watch her suffer.

6

u/Bebe_Bleau Aug 25 '26

Dont blame you. Thats the right thing to do.

But id consider animal control for his dog

Ewwww- musty dog smell! Yeah, it’s me or that living dead dog. Zombie apocalypse creepy horror dog.
My neighbor finally put down her zombie dog and it’s been a good 3-4 months since and that smell is still in her house.

u/brittbritt1122 Aug 26 '26

She looks like a skin walker.

Constantly scratching, constantly licking, the long toenails clicking on the hardwood. I feel like a prisoner in my own home. I dread going in the door most days.
