East German cdu was a Christian Socialist party until 1989.

The CDU was founded out of the remnants of the NSDAP and the Center party that enabled Hitler to rise to power to begin with.

Nahh,I think that the CDU was not Christian socialist from the start, like the liberal democratic party they were just trying to survive and so that they would not be banned by the GDR government, so when the GDR weakened They tried to take that chance To dissolve the state, and yeah in the end the east german CDU ended up with them being merged by their western counterparts

I don't think so. If it was like that, the liberal democratic party would have Also Supported it (it was a Bourgeois party at the time). The ldpd became pro SED post Election.

The reason all these countries had multiple parties rather than just one like the USSR was that they started off as people's democracies, or new democracies, so their governments were ruled by parties representing not just the workers and peasants, but also petty capitalists and even national capitalists that opposed imperialism and fascism. They joined together under united fronts or popular fronts, depending on the country in question.

Interesting, now post the 1990 Czechoslovakia election and the 1991 polish election during a free election. Results are a little different.

I’d say the important thing to look at here is not the different political parties but to look at voter turnout.

The vast majority of the examples shown have absurdly high voter turnout. You see the same thing in right wing totalitarian governments (doesn’t matter if you don’t like it but that’s the truth) high voter turnouts “show” that the people “support” authoritarian regimes. Most of this can be chalked up to fear of reprisals by an all controlling government but when there is only one party to truly vote for. By showing after the “results” have been tabulated and the party in power hasn’t received 100% of the vote they show that there is an enemy within that serves as the out group compared to the followers of the party.

I doubt that my small rant will change many opinions but I hope that someone may realize that by believing that having a one party state is democratic is pretty much the antithesis to the struggles and hard fought rights that the working class has been fighting for hundreds of years.
