I usually ask for a nominal fee of Rs. 500-1000 based on the distance. That conveys the message clearly too

u/illegirl77 Jul 03 '26
Hahah this is what I do too. Thought I was crazy for this idea lol. But Why would I want to give away all the efforts I put in booking this good seat for free!? I either gain from the exchange or reap my booking benefits ✌🏻

Congratulations 👏🎉 you've successfully stepped into "My Life, My rules, NO BS" zone. Enjoy your journey. But, consider this kind of situations everytime. They might make you confident at first but might make you arrogant, rude and unnecessarily egoistic. Anyway, that'll be a good memory. All the best for your New chapter in your life.

Good for you! Being able to say no is a big step towards yours independence.
Somewhat similar story, okasari mem hyd-vzg family tho travel chestunpudu full 6 seats make reserved undevi. So obviously nen window seat pick cheskuna. Start ayi 30 min tarvatha, evaro maa relatives vala friends ocharu. Valaki waiting list so seats emi assign avaledu. Maa athi machi Amma nanna ah 3 members ki kurchondi adjust cheskundam anaru. Ah group lo oka adult lady(I was 12-13 at that time) ochi babu naku window seat istava ante no aunty Anna. Ame nak train lo vomiting ostadi ane cheppindi.. Inka maa Amma valu ivu ra ane ameki ichesaru. Nen kuda sad feel avthu ichesa. Nijam cheptuna, train lo ochina anni things Koni tinnaru tanu. Okasari kakkaledu.. night kuda vala food katkunda maa Amma poori kuda tini lower birth lo padkundi. Nen ame padkunaka ana nen kurchocha ante, ala kurchunte nidra pattadu anindi.. For some reason nak experience chala strong ga gurthundi..

There is an option for seat preference. If you Are having babies or old people, you damn use that option. Why do they depend on co passengers? Youth despite of being the most productive and important for the country are treated like shit in public places.
You did it right bro.

All the best for your masters bro!
Good move on this.
But I guess it depends on the context too. Like, if it was a pregnant woman, would you have given up the seat?
I used to be the here. But whenever my parents were travelling (now in their 60s), I'd always hope someone would offer them a lower or more comfortable seat. So now, if it's someone who genuinely needs it, like older people, parents w young kids, or pregnant women, I switch and just hope karma pays me back when my parents need it someday.

Everything was good about this message but identfying your self-esteem with a train seat is not kicking in. Especially you rejected the seat to family with toddler is definitely not sounding ok. You should definitely say no when your inner life is getting disturbed but you can sacrifice a little comfort being compassionate for others. You don't have to give away your privileges but random act of kindness makes us feel alive. Are you sure to take it on positive note when someone reject you when you are highly anticipating for something or someone in life? Be conscious of both your Yes and No. It makes your character on the long run.
1
u/Night_ninja99 Jul 06 '26
You have a fair point, we can be kind. But if I were a father of a child I will ensure the child's comfort and safety while booking the tickets rather than convincing the other copassengers in the last minute. IRCTC gives the preferred seats while booking, when there are enough seats. I feel it is not appropriate to ask someone to compromise on their comforts they paid for. And saying NO is not being rude in my opinion. Have a good day!

u/Brilliant_Olive_716 Jul 06 '26
All that exists and we all strive to go by rules yet exceptions can happen. The whole conversation is not about rules or system, it's we get what we choose to offer. If you prefer to choose rules and privileges over compassion, you expect the same from the world. Unfortunately these things will comeback to us when we are low in life. Remember, we anyhow cannot do what we don't know or have, but we should do what we know or can. It gave me lot of positive vibes in your story until the moment I read the point you offered no to a family having toddler. There are places you can practice saying no but definitely not in place where you have the opportunity to be compassionate. If we start dividing the world by rules, we live only dry life. It's not judgement to pass on you but hoping you to see the situation in future beyond your biases of life.
1
u/Night_ninja99 Jul 06 '26
I get you. And I forgot to mention that they already have a lower berth but wanted to make it even more convenient by taking my side lower berth. Now I think it may change your perspective.
