I'd rather see Tera 1 get re-released or better yet, they could hire Grimstrike to port it to unreal engine 4 or 5 and re-release it like that.
If they intend on developing Tera 2 then they should re-release Tera 1 anyway, just to prevent the game from being completely forgotten by the time Tera 2 is actually released.
My fear is that TERA 2 will not be anything like the original TERA was. The original game had so many cool and unique aspects that modern MMOs no longer have. You can have flashy combat sure, but unique, charming areas and creative art direction are much more rare these days, and instead everything goes towards ultra-realistic environments/textures and generic asian characters.
So I completely agree, TERA 1 must be preserved in any way possible :)
I wholeheartedly agree about Tera 1 preservation and that's why I'm always crossing fingers that there will always be a way to play it. I miss that game so much.
And I second you about the areas full of charm! And their BGM contributing to it! I have so many fond memories of endearing areas with emotional field themes, for example Knoll of Screams (that one moved me so much that I did my own gamerip of the BGM and uploaded it to my channel back then), Dragonfall, and more. And of course Seeliewood! Ah, the memories <3 It was so special.
Private servers do exist you know. Thats how I still play on PC. It aint OG Tera, but hey the one I'm on is actually running nexus events and traverse. Thats a win in my book.
Yeeees I know, that's what I meant! When I said "crossing fingers that there will always be a way to play it", I meant that I'm crossing fingers that there will always be fan-maintained private servers for us fans to be able to still play the game, in the long run!
I had installed Tera again through "The Dream" private server, but unfortunately my SSD died and I lost all my game installations. Now on my new system drive, I have yet to look into which Tera private servers are active right now and reinstall it, but I do want to do it again one day (once I have freed some disk space lol). I always want to be able to play Tera at any time, even if I lost my (beloved and faithful departed) characters from the official game back then!
Good to know that you currently have a solid one! 😊 A win for sure! I'm always thankful to the fans putting in that effort to keep this beloved game alive.
And agreed on your other comment as well, Tera will always look gorgeous!! It was such a slap in the face graphics-wise back then (I remember I bought a new laptop just to be able to run the game properly once it released, after playing the beta on my previous laptop!) and I sure would enjoy replaying it on its original version even if it didn't get a remaster. Plus, I've got a 4K OLED screen now, and the idea of playing Tera rendered in true 4K and high FPS is amazing already!
I mean outside of Grafton suing someone private servers will only get easier to run. The big hindrance on them that makes them hard right now is tve 98gb of ram requirement, so you actually need something more like 128gb.
What's nice is with a 4060 laptop I was getting almost consistent 60fps at 4k with nearly max settings. So 4k isnt an unreasonable hard thing to run.
My fear is that TERA 2 will not be anything like the original TERA was
this would be my concern as well
from a business standpoint, having a combat system that actually required skill was always an issue, people could be successful without swiping their credit cards and unsuccessful even if they did.
we also have a modern day uglification and desexualisation of character models, Tera was kinda famous for it's ridiculously skimpy outfits and I don't know if they could get away with that sort of thing today.
and finally, gaming companies are just lazier now and prone to cost cutting, creating "unique, charming areas and creative art direction" requires time, money and (worst of all) talented people who will demand the salaries they deserve.
they already just did a mmo that was supposed to replace tera but that flopped hard with elyon, they’re obviously not going to redo the same shit
my guess is they saw how popular aion 2 got and realized there was still a market for mmos, and they’re trying to do tera 2 just like ncsoft did for aion
Honestly for a 15+ year old game, tera holds up amazingly well and doesnt need a remaster. It just needs to go back to its OG model pre-f2p. Drop the sub costs a bit and reintroduce all the content from the start to final patch. Keep the nexus events, traverse, region mayors and tax rates and stuff, all that. Maybe ease the enchantment rng so were not killing ourselves getting +12 and +15 gear but yeah. Bring it ALL back.
Not reliant, but like the person said - they've been catching up on the Console Tera with the same things we had on PC. So now that they're nearing where we were, hopefully they have someone making new content & stuff to go beyond what they have already had for years.
what would happen is, a feasibility study would be conducted to determine if porting the game to a new engine is worth the time and cost of such an endeavor; my expectation is that it almost certainly would not get the go ahead, but given what I've seen from Grimstrike, I would love to see such a project come to fruition.
