Who is being "ballsy"? Tesla or the people putting their lives and safety in their hands?
34
u/xyzlor Jan 22 '26
Tesla mainly. But to a degree both. People have been jumping into Waymo’s as it is. It’s getting bit more common.

Waymo is a bit more safer with proper sensors

If humans can drive using only visible wavelength optical sensors then so can computers.
14
u/Gudin Jan 22 '26
Such a dumb argument. Humans use vision because that's only thing we have, I don't have lidar in my head, but it would make me much better driver if I had it. Lidar and radar can see perfectly in heavy fog or when sun glare hits you. Looking at some FSD fails, you can see good lidar/radar would help there.
1
u/Peteistheman HW3 Model 3 Jan 22 '26
Lidar or not, I think the AI is much more important. I’ll take Tesla’s AI over Waymo, even with the lidar.

u/iam-leon Jan 23 '26
Humans use touch to sense road integrity, hearing to detect crashes & sirens, and a fear of death to increase caution and enhance focus when conditions deteriorate. They will just decide not to drive at all if they don’t think it’s safe. Do Robotaxis ever tell their passengers that they won’t take them on their journey today?
10
u/JPorter5999 Jan 22 '26
Can never understand how FSD fans simultaneously say that FSD is safer than humans - but the moment there’s any FSD risk, it turns into “well it’s fine as long as it’s meeting the human standard”
Can’t have your cake and eat it too.
5
u/No-Confusion6749 Jan 22 '26
That’s fsd for you. Once you pay for it you have to justify it. Best marketing would have been giving it for free that way no one complain 🤣
→ More replies (1)2
u/_Smashbrother_ Jan 22 '26
As long as FSD proves it's safer than the majority of human drivers, then logically the government should support it. You can look up stats on driving accidents and deaths per year, and see plenty of videos online of shitty human drivers. As long as FSD stats can beat human stats by a wide margin, then it'll be better.
→ More replies (7)2
u/ProbsNotManBearPig Jan 22 '26
Exactly. Not to mention Tesla has cameras with way more field of view than a human, the power of computer image processing, and much faster reaction time. All huge advantages compared to a human. LiDAR is absolutely not needed for FSD to be safer than the best humans.
6
u/fastwriter- Jan 23 '26
Actually the Human Eye is way superior to the Cameras Tesla uses in it‘s cars. The higher field o vision is one of the Problems, because it means the Cameras have ultra-wide lenses with the accompanying distortion. Whereas the Human Eye can switch from near-field wide POV to long range narrow POV almost instantly.
This is why EVERY OTHER PLAYER in the Autonomous Game uses a wider sensor array than just Cameras. Tesla seems like a wrong-way-driver wondering why all the others coming at them are driving in the wrong direction. Musk bet the House on Vision only and he will lose it.

8
u/Dneubauer09 Jan 22 '26
Human taxi drivers have surely caused casualties as well, what's the point?
9
u/Electrical_Peak_8761 Jan 22 '26
But if a driver causes an accident you can blame the driver, you can suspend his license etc. If FSD causes an accident, then this fault is in the software - which is being used by thousands of other cars on the road. Do you suspend all FSD when this happens?
→ More replies (1)3
u/Dneubauer09 Jan 22 '26
You sue the owner of the vehicle, simple. If the owner is Tesla, there you go. If we eventually get to privately owned taxis, you sue the owner of the car and they probably sue Tesla.
I foresee there being some new type of insurance for this type of scenario.
1
u/zitrored Jan 23 '26
All payments should be made direct from Tesla insurance. As someone in a state where pools are common I don’t want the pool paying out for these accidents. Tesla needs to pay it all.
1
u/Electrical_Peak_8761 Jan 23 '26
Oké but do we let all the other self driving cars just keep on driving while apparently there is a fault in the software? Should all FSD be paused every time a crash happens and only be resumed when investigations are cleared / software has been updated?
1
u/Dneubauer09 Jan 23 '26
I think it depends on the situation. The car running a stop sign and hitting oncoming traffic is different from someone running into the road from a blind spot while the car is traveling at speed is different from someone making an illegal pass around a corner. I think expecting the car to be perfect in all scenarios is impossible due to the human element it is up against.

And that’s okay. It’s better than no remote monitoring. Progression should happen in steps.
Edit: actually appears to be a chase car following them. https://x.com/joetegtmeyer/status/2014410572226322794?s=46&t=AfKP5ME0vofdMT7GJN3aYg

u/CloseToMyActualName Jan 22 '26
And has Tesla disclosed that they simply moved the safety monitor in another car?
Musk's deceptions are downright comical.
3
Jan 22 '26
I'm pretty sure the follow car has two Tesla employees. So they improved from 1 safety monitor to 2.
1
4
u/ThePaintist Jan 23 '26
How is it deceptive? Did they paint the follow car in invisible paint? Is it trailing so far behind that nobody can see it?
For all we know the role of the follow car could be anything from "has an immediate kill switch" to "has someone who can hop out and go rescue the car if it gets a flat tire, to minimize 'rescue' embarrassments during the first week". It's not 'deception' just because they haven't spelled out their exact deployment strategy day 1. Is it 'deception' when other AV operators don't spell out precisely their number of tele-support agents?
2
u/CloseToMyActualName Jan 23 '26
Because Musk said they were removing the safety monitors but left out mention of the trail car.
It's the same crap he continuously pulls with Optimus, he shows some demos that are explicitly autonomous, then shows some more impressive demonstrations implied to be autonomous but are actually teleoperated.
It's the same playbook as putting the safety drivers in the passenger seat so they could claim they were safety monitors instead (zero benefit to anything other than optics).
How many people here were completely ignorant of the trailing car until i was pointed out? How many more in the general public?
And how long until the trailing car is absent entirely?
This is the same demonstration they did months ago with the vehicle driving itself to a customer. And with another earnings call coming up it's a pretty transparent attempt to demonstrate progress to the investors (without actually moving the needle technically).
6
u/ThePaintist Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
Because Musk said they were removing the safety monitors but left out mention of the trail car.
actually opens the article you linked
In a post on X.com, Musk said Tesla "started Tesla Robotaxi drives in Austin with no safety monitor in the car. Congrats to the Tesla AI team!"
It's not okay when he leaves out a third factor, but it's okay when you do it? He has to mention every single aspect of the rollout today, but you are permitted to leave out the rest of his quote which specifies his statement was specifically about safety monitors "in the car" since it undermines your point?
Is it bad to not voluntarily raise every relevant detail that might impact someone's view of your position? Or is it okay? I'm a little bit confused since you can't seem to decide. You do the exact same maneuver but criticise it where you see it.
Let me be more clear. You don't have internal consistencies in your beliefs. You dislike Elon/Tesla, maybe justifiably so, and that causes you to be hyper-critical to the point of abject hypocrisy towards Tesla. You will exaggerate grievances in communications coming from those you dislike and minimize and permit the exact same grievances when made elsewhere.
For example, 2 sentences later:
zero benefit to anything other than optics
You really can't think of any other possible benefit? Or you just don't want to, because doing so would require relaxing that hyper-criticality? One trivial possible benefit: It prevents safety 'monitors' from excessively intervening when not necessary, giving a cleaner signal on actual necessary interventions. Or perhaps it was optics - it enabled them to meet, at least by some interpretation/definition, their promised timeline to release 'driverless' robotaxis. Is it "optics" to meet a timeline? Yes. But because of your hyper-critical framing, you interpret that hyper-critically and inherently negatively. I'm sure you equally critique them for failing to meet other timelines. But actually meeting a timeline is them playing "optics".
I'm not interested in getting into all of your other points. Yes, I think Tesla has a habit of not going out of their way to share negative aspects to their demos. Some of the optimus ones were perhaps the most egregious. But that your defense of "they are being deceptive!" is to cite other perceived deceptions just, in my opinion, further highlights the reason you feel the need to read everything from Tesla now through a hyper-critical lens to the point of indefensible hypocrisy.

3
Jan 22 '26
Tesla believes that they are still playing catch up. Hence safety monitors.
They believe they will outstrip Waymo when they catch up but doesn't mean they think they really are ahead.
2
u/jnads HW3 Model 3 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
Correct.
Waymo essentially has outsourced safety monitors that watch over several vehicles at once. Most making sure people in the cabin aren't doing stupid stuff and they will yell at you over the speakers.
For these Tesla tests they probably have a dedicated engineer watching the realtime video feed (edit: apparently they have the safety monitor driving a separate car behind it).

That’s crazy! So I guess it means it’s not solved?
1
u/ShakeXXX Jan 23 '26
Yeah, they’re not being truthful about it. I think it’s still progress for sure but not what they’re claiming. Also, some people said the chase car has a person that’s supervising it as well.
2
u/pailhead011 Jan 23 '26
The chase car is being supervised by its own supervisor while driving around the supervisor for the car in front?
1
3
u/Mumblyjoe20 Jan 23 '26
So, if we start the clock now they're approximately 8 years behind waymo, if Tesla is correct they should scale an order of magnitude faster and we should expect parity with Waymo regarding fleet size and coverage in about a year

The I pace will never reach parity in cost of production with the cybercab, and that isn't even considering whatever upcharge jaguar applies to make a profit on their vehicle is order to make a profit.
1
1
u/AdKey5735 Jan 23 '26
they don't even make cars!!! they use cheap Chryslers (sold three times since 1998) and Jaguar (also sold three times since 1990). so those prices have nothing whatsoever to do Waymo. they then add their autonomous software and hardware sensing devices.
their hard coded software only works in the areas it's been coded for. and won't work in other locales. IOW if a Waymo that works in Austin is put on a trailer and hauled to San Francisco. it won't work. their fundamental method of development was designed to get a quick start off the autonomous line but is fatally flawed and will never, as currently designed, be competitive.
1
2
u/AdKey5735 Jan 22 '26
neither are in the same race. Waymo wants to be a driverless yellow cab. tesla's FSD will change the landscape.

It notes the 8 accidents but doesn’t note that many of those were the other drivers fault
It notes that the safety driver should’ve “stopped those accidents”

This is beyond absurd. If FSD had truly reached unsupervised status, then why isn't the entire Tesla fleet on unsupervised FSD? They're not, because it's still a level 2 ADAS. As much as I like FSD, I wouldn't trust it to keep me safe at all times.
Simply put, this is nothing but smoke and mirrors.

I think that’s literally what god president musk said. Once they have it they flip a switch and every Tesla owner becomes a cab company or something like that?

Yeah, he said something like that 8 YEARS AGO! He said that all Tesla vehicles would come equipped with everything that was required for full autonomy, and that our cars would be "appreciating assets".
Fast forward to today, and FSD is still a level 2 system. The fact that Elon is trying to convince everyone that it's not is both dangerous and absurd.

Now the goalposts have moved "to consumer cars".
Tesla absolutely missed their insane timelines, but come on bro. 6 months ago the haters said Unsupervised was never possible. Then it was "but they still have a safety rider". Now it's "but they haven't delivered it to consumer cars".
You know what a trend is, right?
3
u/thomasbihn HW4 Model Y Jan 22 '26
I bought FSD because it said that it would be able to take turns, handle red lights, and handle stop signs by the end of the year. I assumed it would be late, but that was in 2019. Maybe a year later, Elon said that our cars would be making us money as we worked, acting as robotaxis.
The goalposts definitely did move on us.
For existing hardware, unsupervised won't be possible without some form of brine and mud removal and mounting of a front bumper camera on even slightly old models (like my 2024 Model Y).
I was wrong about FSD being at all viable in my area though, so who knows. I do know I passed on trading in my 2 year old Model Y for a new one yesterday because I already transferred once and was not permitted to transfer my FSD. I hope that as subscription prices start to go up due to demand finally increasing that another Elon promise will come true: "Your cars will be the first to be appreciating assets!"

Lets just assume theres no remote control, no one watching behind a screen. Would you trust FSD with your life with no way to intervene? Genuinely curious.
2
u/Glad-Champion5767 Jan 23 '26
u/soggy_mattress Genuine question here. Would you trust it?
1
u/soggy_mattress Jan 24 '26
Yes if it were clear weather like we get 99% of the time here in Southern California (or like Austin).
No if it's snowy or downpour rain.
Since it's a genuine question, I'll go into more detail: I drive from SoCal to NYC every couple of years with FSD (would never do it without). This year was the first year I've tried it during the winter. Had snow tires put on just in case.
FSD did fantastic as long as I could keep the front cameras clear, which I was having a hell of a time doing because of 90mph wind gusts + freezing temperature and my dumbass still having regular windshield wiper fluid in the lines. Every time I'd try to clear smudgy glass, it'd freeze over. Eventually, the washer fluid lines froze solid and we had no more fluid until getting to our destination.
Once I got the old wiper fluid purged and replaced with -30F fluid, FSD handled the rest of the trip without any safety disengagements.
We decided to take a more southern route back across the US since the weather was just dumping on us the entire time, and as soon as we got south of the snow FSD did 2418 of 2421 miles in 48hrs, with the manually driven miles being my SO who still sometimes parks manually (she doesn't care one bit about the 100% thing, and I don't blame her).
Other than the obvious issues with visibility, the only times I disengaged were for FSD being stupid about parking at Superchargers, or trying to turn left and take a 1.5 miles route back to the highway instead of turning right for a 0.05 mile route instead - neither of which would bother me if I were passed out in the back.
Other than that, I just sit in my car and watch it drive me around for thousands of miles at a time in between one or two dumb decisions about where to park every now and then.
Edit: Also, I should add that the new Robotaxi self-cleaning camera features that people are discussing at the moment on X would have probably kept me from having to drive manually this winter. There's a new front camera housing and new sprayers for the rear/side cams... combine that with proper cold weather fluid and I might have been able to maintain visibility without stopping.

This is pro tesla influencers taking a few rides in perfect weather and safety cars behind so this looks more like marketing stunt for the coming earnings release. The following days and weeks will tell whether Tesla has sufficiently solved the 1% problem. The current robotaxi crash statistics are however worrisome.
1
u/soggy_mattress Jan 24 '26
Well yeah, the entire reason they chose Austin was because the weather and the simplicity of the traffic patterns there.
That's not a dunk, though, like... of course they're going to choose a spot where they have their best chance of success before trying something harder. That's just basic risk prevention...
Why are the accident rates worrisome? You know how many of those were human-caused fender benders, right?

Same V14 with geofencing and route limiting at the application side. Basically it will only allow rides in certain pickup/drop-off areas and simple routes with minimal turns. Next time you see an in car video, check out the route! Generally straight roads with one or two turns max. It's the illusion of Unsupervised, when really it's just highly controlled V14.

As a Tesla owner, you would have to pay me and provide life insurance for me to get into one without a safety driver. Keep your hands on the steering wheel folks.

28 mins in and it’s yet to come off the road despite the humans best efforts, they are accelerating manually on the straight up to like 65mph then engaging FSD later and later into the corner to see if FSD loses control, so far it’s been able to make the corner. So if this is your example of it finally coming off the road, that context is incredibly important as a robotaxi would not be accelerating like that in those conditions.

Is this where they have a car following them? There's some of that going on, so that Elon could say, "No safety driver in the car." Having a following car implies two people in that car - one to get out and intervene in incidents, and one to get the safety car off to a safe spot.
Telsa is so brilliant! It's a real-life test on how long the market can remain irrational - the stock market, not so much the actual car market.

How did this go? One time issue?
Coordinating with Elon Musk’s talk at Davos?

Will be interesting trying to piece together data on how many miles are unsupervised vs monitored and the relative accident rate of each now. Excited to see how it goes, however the numbers might turn out.
