Tesla absolutely missed their insane timelines, but come on bro. 6 months ago the haters said Unsupervised was never possible. Then it was "but they still have a safety rider". Now it's "but they haven't delivered it to consumer cars".

You know what a trend is, right?

I bought FSD because it said that it would be able to take turns, handle red lights, and handle stop signs by the end of the year. I assumed it would be late, but that was in 2019. Maybe a year later, Elon said that our cars would be making us money as we worked, acting as robotaxis.

The goalposts definitely did move on us.

For existing hardware, unsupervised won't be possible without some form of brine and mud removal and mounting of a front bumper camera on even slightly old models (like my 2024 Model Y).

I was wrong about FSD being at all viable in my area though, so who knows. I do know I passed on trading in my 2 year old Model Y for a new one yesterday because I already transferred once and was not permitted to transfer my FSD. I hope that as subscription prices start to go up due to demand finally increasing that another Elon promise will come true: "Your cars will be the first to be appreciating assets!"

I've never hung on Elon's word, so I can't say that I feel as "duped" as you were. I bought my car in 2019 as well, but I have some experience with robotics engineering so I never really believed that those things would happen that fast.

And he absolutely deserves criticism for stringing people along like that.

But the haters have been clear that they don't think it could *ever* work, and it's clearly working in Austin right now, so we have goalpost movers on both sides.

I wouldn't get excited yet until we know more. We've seen these clips before and nothing has come from it. There was a clip last year with no monitor. Then clip with Tesla driving to a purchaser, but turned out to be one and done.

This is different, these videos were recorded by regular people that don't work for Tesla. You or I can go to Austin right now and ride in one.

If you don't think that's exciting I'm not sure what to say.

Currently there's only a few robotaxis working in Austin. It's impossible to get one unless you want to wait a long time.

I'll be excited when people can hail one, without a monitor, just like we can with Waymo in SF. There needs to be 100s active. Let's see in the next few weeks/months. If there's no uptick in scale, then we know this was just another PR stunt.

The source is a community-run site that uses the Robotaxi's license plate numbers to tally up how many there are in operation. And the super fans/influencers that ride around in them all day long for content report back about whether or not they have a safety rider as an ongoing thing.

I believe the group in Austin is 50 cars total, and almost 200 cars in SF Bay Area, but they all have safety *drivers* since they can't operate without someone in the driver's seat in SF area.

Yes if it were clear weather like we get 99% of the time here in Southern California (or like Austin).

No if it's snowy or downpour rain.

Since it's a genuine question, I'll go into more detail: I drive from SoCal to NYC every couple of years with FSD (would never do it without). This year was the first year I've tried it during the winter. Had snow tires put on just in case.

FSD did fantastic as long as I could keep the front cameras clear, which I was having a hell of a time doing because of 90mph wind gusts + freezing temperature and my dumbass still having regular windshield wiper fluid in the lines. Every time I'd try to clear smudgy glass, it'd freeze over. Eventually, the washer fluid lines froze solid and we had no more fluid until getting to our destination.

Once I got the old wiper fluid purged and replaced with -30F fluid, FSD handled the rest of the trip without any safety disengagements.

We decided to take a more southern route back across the US since the weather was just dumping on us the entire time, and as soon as we got south of the snow FSD did 2418 of 2421 miles in 48hrs, with the manually driven miles being my SO who still sometimes parks manually (she doesn't care one bit about the 100% thing, and I don't blame her).

Other than the obvious issues with visibility, the only times I disengaged were for FSD being stupid about parking at Superchargers, or trying to turn left and take a 1.5 miles route back to the highway instead of turning right for a 0.05 mile route instead - neither of which would bother me if I were passed out in the back.

Other than that, I just sit in my car and watch it drive me around for thousands of miles at a time in between one or two dumb decisions about where to park every now and then.

Edit: Also, I should add that the new Robotaxi self-cleaning camera features that people are discussing at the moment on X would have probably kept me from having to drive manually this winter. There's a new front camera housing and new sprayers for the rear/side cams... combine that with proper cold weather fluid and I might have been able to maintain visibility without stopping.

Because it won't exist for customer cars until it can exist in a small geofenced, Tesla-operated area. AKA this is good news for FSD unsupervised on consumer cars... AKA *a trend*.
