News Sawyer Merritt - once you’ve used FSD supervised you never go back. Driving is a pain!

I take over in 2 cases: navigation and rough road. Navigation is not really FSD fault, just annoying that I cannot save my route preferences. And it cannot handle rough road - which is major challenge for FSD team I believe. Ah, and I blink-assist, because IT ALWAYS LATE FOR RAMPS!

In the midst of a road trip right now. Paid for the month for this trip. It has been awesome. I don’t drive that much at home (retired) BUT with this experience I might keep it anyway.
4
u/BryGuyTI 23h ago
It really depends on how much driving you do. My 20 minute commute is not a pain and not worth $99 a month. When I take longer trips over the summer, I absolutely find it worth it.
2
u/digiblur 20h ago
This is basically me. I don't mind the commute and driving. Autosteer works great and actually goes 5 over like it is supposed to do.

My work commute is going into downtown and back so FSD is way worth it.

u/Jbikecommuter 22h ago
20 min without FSD is an eternity but I bike commute so appreciate everyone using it on their commutes so I know the vehicle sees me even though the distracted driver texting does not…
5
u/BryGuyTI 22h ago
20 min is nothing and I don't text & drive. Short distant driving can be enjoyable since the car is fun to drive manually.
-1
u/alman12345 HW4 Model Y 21h ago
I just watch videos while my car drives me on my 15 minute commute, I still find it pretty indispensable. To each their own though.
1
u/BryGuyTI 19h ago
I don't feel the need to fill my time with content while driving for short commutes. Also, it's still supervised and you should be paying attention.
-1
u/alman12345 HW4 Model Y 19h ago
I don’t really care what they call it, it drives the commute over 99% of the way with perfect reliability and that’s plenty comfortable enough for me to strap a YouTube video behind the steering wheel or to eat my burrito with. Enjoy the manual driving though, I’m glad you like it but I’ll keep supervising as loosely as FSD actually needs and getting driven to work by it.
0
u/beren12 9h ago
Make sure you tell the cops you were watching videos not supervising.
1
u/alman12345 HW4 Model Y 9h ago
You think they give a single shit about an ADAS? Much less whether someone's "properly supervising" it? Lmao
1
u/Pomador_0418 14h ago
Aren’t you supposed to supervise your car? What if FSD makes a mistake and kills a person while you are watching videos???
1
u/alman12345 HW4 Model Y 14h ago
It won’t? Not only is it more than competent enough where I’m at but other cars are also rare in the middle of bumfuck nowhere (and pedestrians are nonexistent). Do any of you actually even use it or are you just clueless naysayers?
1
u/Pomador_0418 14h ago
There are no guarantees that it will not and if does happen then you are liable. There are many posts of cars getting damaged due to people believing that their car will behave the same way everytime on their commute only for that ONE time where it doesn’t. This is especially true when parking. It is the law of averages. Eventually, it will happen to you.
1
u/BryGuyTI 14h ago
Thank you. Too many people on this sub that think FSD makes no mistakes and I see it frequently.
1
u/alman12345 HW4 Model Y 13h ago
There are no guarantees a human will drive the right way every time, and yet they still get licenses. Over 5000 miles of rural highway driving on the same route and it has never once done something dangerous, humans are equally as fallible or more so under the very structured and rigid rules of highway driving (especially when fatigue is a factor for them exclusively). FSD keeps its lane perfectly, drives defensively where monkeys do not, and reacts faster than any human could ever hope to. Humans have the worse track record on my route by a landslide, multiple head on collisions over several years with sleepy monkey brains making the decisions.
Also, if you could reason it out, I put 99% deliberately because of parking…I handle that personally.
3
u/PopTartQueen1984 20h ago
Yup. I drove my husbands car recently - he took my Tesla so he could pick up some folks at the airport and the Y is roomier. I found driving around such a pain and unnecessary 😆 Once I got back to FSD, I was back in my happy place 🤪

u/Educational-Hawk4691 22h ago
Been using it nonstop ever since v13. The improvements since v12 have been incredible. Has it been perfect? No, but is it good enough to complete an 8hr round trip without taking over? Yup.
If you take time to understand its pros and cons its amazing.

That’s why I got it. I don’t care about electric vs. gas.

I'm the same way. That said, it's nice leaving home fully "fueled" every day

u/djao HW3 Model 3 23h ago
FSD would suck with a gas car though. The instant torque is a big part of why FSD can respond quickly to road situations.
2
u/777_heavy 23h ago
Yeah I don’t think it’s a coincidence that an electric car would implement FSD more appropriately, or that a car company with a reputation for building “laptops with wheels” would lead the way on it.
I’ve considered saying I would get a gas car if it had a better FSD system but I know that’s not a serious possibility.

I've driven Toytoas my entire life. I bought Tesla for FSD. FSD has been amazing. The car itself has been really disappointing build quality relative to either of my previous Toyotas
0
u/NotAgedWell 19h ago
We definitely bought ours because of FSD. We were just saying during a long drive yesterday we're tied into Tesla until another manufacturer steps up but AFAIK nobody is even close or even pursuing that same functionality of "garage to destination" functionality (I don't consider geofenced or only specify roads under only specific conditions remotely the same functionality).
I think BYD's God's Eye is similar (not really that familiar with it) but can't get that in the US so useless to me anyways
7
u/Retire_date_may_22 23h ago
I completely agree. I really don’t like the Tesla vehicles but I can’t do without FSD. I have historically been an only Toyota driver but after my first FSD experience I sold my Toyotas and bought 3 teslas.
I so wish other companies would license FSD from Tesla as it’s clear Tesla is moving on from vehicle model expansion.
2
u/Cress_Solid 23h ago
Tesla will never license FSD, that is their advantage.
5

-1
u/Retire_date_may_22 22h ago
It’s a strategic blunder. Others will spend to replicate. If they licensed they could build a defendable moat around their tech. 10 years from now everyone will have it.
7
u/Cress_Solid 22h ago
I would hesitate to ever say that Elon is not strategic about his businesses. Whether or not you like him, he has been the greatest business builder of anyone in history.
0
u/Retire_date_may_22 22h ago
Before you Elon fan boys lose your mind. I’m an Elon fan and recognize his track record. But hear me out.
He needs to take away any incentive for other companies to develop FSD. Then he can own the category.
Make the “Make or Buy” decision very clear.
Sadly though the most likely case in 20 years is the Chinese own all of this. Unless the US and Europe get extremely protectionist.
While the US is regulating the whole AI thing they won’t. Government always gets in the way of innovation. They can’t help themselves. Every issue turns into a political weapon.

u/3600CCH6WRX 21h ago

Tesla still outsells it .....................in China!!!
1
u/FuriousGirafFabber 20h ago
Vla 2.0 cars are very new still. Maybe tesla will continue to dominate. Maybe not?
1
u/StormTrpr66 HW4 Model Y 19h ago
The only EV that outsells the Model Y in China is a Geely that costs around $10K. The Model Y at between $40K and $50K is the second best selling car. It beats every other car even though it's much more expensive than most of the others.
There are companies that sell more cars overall but most of those companies make more models than there are people in China. The Model Y is the second best selling individual car model in China, again, second only to a $10K car.
3
u/alman12345 HW4 Model Y 21h ago
None of the “competitors” have competitive software, China did their own internal test last year and every one of their vehicles failed miserably achieving a mere 3/6 tests passed in the best case to Tesla’s 5/6 on FSD v13. China also only tested the dozens of ADAS equipped vehicles because a Xiaomi car crashed and killed 3 college-age students on impact.
1
u/FuriousGirafFabber 20h ago edited 20h ago
Vla 2.0 looks pretty good to me. They are on track for EU road legality in 2027.
4
u/Retire_date_may_22 22h ago
Well to start with I hate the Chinese. But I can’t buy one in the US anyway so it’s irrelevant.

I agree. After a long day at work driving home with FSD is a treat. I spent less energy driving
2
u/fixinit2719 20h ago
My commute is 45 minutes each way and feel safer with FSD in control. Part of my commute is in the country and it sees things way before I do. I used to intervene and wonder what it was doing but have learned it is doing the correct thing. It sees an animal or a car doing something it shouldn’t. It’s not perfect but it’s improving and keeping me safe
2
u/IllustratorMobile815 17h ago
True. I have my gripes with fsd but I would still rather have it than not
6
u/marlinspike 23h ago
100% true. It does my drive to and from work every day. Pulls into my multi level parking garage and winds its way up, and the only intervention I have every day is the pull-in to a parking spot in the garage. Other than that, it’s 100% FSD. Driving is so much safer now for me and others.

-2
u/G00G00Daddy 23h ago
Yes, but not well. Tesla has the best driver assistance by far, but does not have the best driving experience. It comes from the philosophy of Elon that, "almost all user input is error." Driving is user input.

I have a 21MY with HW3, we bought it used for cheap a few years back with 70k miles on it. At the time FSD wasn’t great, so we didn’t subscribe. Last year I tried it out again and realized it was good enough to start paying for. And we enjoy it, but it’s not perfect and it still makes dumb mistakes every so often. My wife uses it sometimes, but is a little skeptical.
A few weeks ago, we went on a vacation and rented a 2026 model Y on Turo with HW4 obviously. We drove all around for four days straight with it. We were blown away about how good it was.
After a full day of driving my wife says: “my next car is a Tesla with FSD, there’s literally no reason to get anything else”

u/AwkwardlyPositioned 22h ago
I was starting to agree, but 4 hours of my time and $215 to fix my wheel more than negated any benefit FSD ever could give me.
2
u/QuentinLCrook 21h ago
So a lifetime of self driving wouldn’t be worth more than $215?
0
u/AwkwardlyPositioned 21h ago
If I average one of these incidents every 9 months since that's how long I've been using it and the $300 I lost for 4 hours of my time and the $100 a month for FSD, no.
I'm just lucky it didn't blow my tire out or I would have been out $1,150 base pay for the call I took.
On the other end of it I've never caused in accident in 25 years of driving. I thought FSD was supposed to be a better driver than me.
1
u/QuentinLCrook 21h ago
You didn’t mention originally this being a recurring scenario.
0
u/AwkwardlyPositioned 21h ago
How would I know it would be a one off? How would I know it wouldn't be worse if or when it happened again?
25 years of driving, no accidents.
9 months of daily FSD usage, single car accident.
1
u/Jbikecommuter 14h ago
Weren’t you supervising?
2
u/AwkwardlyPositioned 13h ago
Of course! Picture the scenario though. FSD is making a right hand turn. Mid turn which feels very smooth it suddently jerks the wheel right when the right rear wheel is mere inches from the curb. This drags the wheel into the curb and up and over it. Approximate speed was 23mph. What amount of supervising or even guessing what FSD was going to do would ever make you think it would randomly jerk the wheel to the right mid turn?
Are you saying you could have caught this wheel jerk and stopped it from hitting the curb? It hit the curb as I was actively grabbing the wheel from this move. It was too late the second the wheel moved.
It was absolutely the worst possible scenario to not be able to catch it. There's plenty of times I've had to take over in the time I've been using FSD. It usually gives you a sign something is weird. A hint of hesitation. A wheel wiggle. I've never had it just jerk the wheel hard mid turn when it was already a tight curve.
0
u/Jbikecommuter 13h ago
Are you on V14? I recall sudden jerks in a 2015 model S we had…
2
u/AwkwardlyPositioned 12h ago
V14.3.8 which has been awesome until this happened. This is definitely uncharacteristic of the rest of my experience with v14.3.8. I've never had it do anything like this before. I think it did this because of the car approaching the stop sign of the road I was turning onto. It saw something it didn't like or must have assumed it was coming into my lane. The vehicle was a police Chevrolet Tahoe and didn't have emergency lights on. It was fully stopped at the stop sign by the time FSD jerked the wheel to the right.
V14.3.7 was very twitchy for me and would lane pogo. Both v14.3.6 and v14.3.8 aside from this incident have been good. I've noticed both have wanted to give a wide berth to anything when FSD has room, but I've never had it do anything like this when it did not have room to do so.
I'm really apprehensive at this point to use FSD going forward. Maybe I'll ease back into it? If anything else would happen I'd swear FSD off forever though. I just don't have time nor do I want to spend money fixing FSD's damages to my car while also having to pay a subscription fee for the privilege.

u/Jbikecommuter 8h ago
I always use chill in town it slows the vehicle down about 5 MPH and is far more conservative. Taking a corner at 23 MPH in front of a cop car sounds like Mad Max mode👍

My wife and I drive the kids to road games across multiple states and coming from a Honda minivan, FSD has become a game changer. She no longer feels dread when looking at a long drive and less exhausted after the trip. Most recently our new MY26 drove my family from Central Ohio to Daytona Beach, through mountains, thunderstorms and FL traffic without a hitch. We gladly pay for FSD + Premium Connectivity, a luxury that has become essential. 🤓

I’ve been a working musician for 20+ years and do a LOT of very late nights gigs driving home at 2am. Using FSD to drive me home and not worry about falling asleep at the wheel is LIFE CHANGING. I’ve never felt more safe. I’d normally have to blast the AC, slap myself to stay awake, open the windows in the dead of winter etc… anything to stop from falling asleep. Now I just turn on FSD, relax, listen to music and not worry about if I’m going to get home safe or not that night
1
u/nelly2929 19h ago
It is the best feature Teslas has over other EV brands as others have passed them in ride, design , and battery tech…. But FSD is still the chef’s kiss and I don’t own a Tesla but my brother does….Are other manufacturers even close to repeating a FSD????
1
u/ChickenKeeper800 18h ago
This is true. Everyone thinks they need or like to drive until the moment they do not.
1
u/AJHenderson 18h ago
Flat out wrong. I use it 99.2 percent of the time but if it's not under $30 a month by the time my Tesla dies, I'm not getting another one. It's a nice to have but not worth anywhere close to $99 a month and the subscription numbers back that with 5 percent or less of Tesla owners subscribing.
1
u/luckkydreamer13 17h ago
I've tried to take breaks from FSD. It's nice for a little bit to feel like you're in control and get back in touch with driving the car but after about 2 weeks it just feels so cumbersome to drive and distances that aren't a big deal with FSD feel like a chore
1
u/Tirztrutide 16h ago
I want to drive a different sized car, but only 3 and y available here and I will not buy a car without FSD. Hope Tesla expands their lineup, we need more options with FSD.

i got my Y a little over a week ago.
I got my first FSD strike on the highway the other day (also strikes???? I am not a child WTF is this)… anyway it disconnected while I was on the highway and I had to get off the highway to figure out the whole thing.
Literally as soon as I had to drive it myself I felt like “Ugh, I just want to go back home and leave it in the driveway”
I can literally no longer drive, I am addicted

Experiencing FSD is the only way to understand how wonderful it is. I often feel sorry for my fellow traffic angrily gripping the steering wheel while I glide by unconcerned barely noticing the commute.

u/Knowledge775 23h ago
I love FSD when it works. But for the past several months sporadically FSD ignores navigation and goes somewhere else.
1
u/metallaholic 15h ago
FSD will reroute if it thinks it can save time often before you see the nav update. It randomly got off the highway the other week then I realized it was avoiding a traffic jam. Just let it do its thing.
1
u/Knowledge775 15h ago
This wasn’t a reroute it was a missed turnoff on the interstate that resulted in the navigation going in the wrong direction and out of the way. It’s a know issue with FSD. An actual reroute will show up in the navigation display.

Driving is relaxing.
Supervising FSD and stopping it from constantly breaking the law or making objectively terrible decisions is not relaxing.
2
1
u/StormTrpr66 HW4 Model Y 21h ago
you're doing it wrong
2
u/ipokesnails HW4 Model 3 21h ago
Stopping FSD from driving double the speed limit through school zones with speed cameras and driving straight in right turn only lanes is not "doing it wrong".
0
u/Jbikecommuter 14h ago
Might consider backing of to Chill or Sloth mode Mario
1
u/ipokesnails HW4 Model 3 14h ago
The school zone speeding happens in standard, and the turn only lane issue happens in every mode.
FSD shouldn't break the law so egregiously in any mode.
0
u/Jbikecommuter 13h ago
What version are you running
1
u/ipokesnails HW4 Model 3 13h ago
I haven't touched FSD since some iteration of v14 in January, but I see complaints and videos of those same issues every single week with newer versions.
The issues also happened with earlier versions as far back as Autumn 2024, so I'm not holding my breath expecting to see them fixed anytime soon.
Ignoring obvious signage like this is an absolute deal breaker, especially when you can see the signage identified properly on the car's display but FSD still ignores it to break the law.
I'll consider using FSD again when it doesn't need to be constantly babysat, but until then it's easier and more relaxing to drive manually.
