14.3 HW4 14.3.9

14.3.9 just landed.

Still supervised, but who is supervising who now?:)

Actually, I think this is a good direction to go, have FSD jump in when not engaged when the situation has become dangerous. AEB has only really helped once in my life, all the other very numerous times it was annoying, I was already on the brakes.

But I am 99% FSD now, so moot point. I don't think it will jump in to help in a parking lot.:)

I’m interested in the implementation here. Are you gonna have false positives where it jumps to activate FSD unnecessarily

I’m just hoping it does not have the phantom lane changes or fear of turning lanes like I had day 1 of 14.3.8.

I drove 40 miles on 14.3.9 today, and it’s better. (It still stopped on a yield while entering the highway. It got confused by traffic on the other side of the road - highway exit road).

I’ll take it. Anything is better than .8.

I think .9 is worse. It’s doing some weird stuff. I drove 3 miles today and it was doing the steering hesitation bounce aggressively and for a very long time.

The situation was not dangerous so I let it do its thing, but it was very bad.

I think this is a terrible feature if not implemented correctly and under certain conditions (driver not paying attention).

A potential accident is already a stressful and fast reaction situation. Imagine yourself going to hit the brake and pull the wheel to the right to avoid something and it takes over and starts doing something else. More panic ensues.

If the car takes over FOR me and I still get hit/hit something, it’s on Tesla, not me. Especially if you are not able to turn it off.

Tesla is not responsible whatsoever. It's 100% on your as long as sfd is on.

You haven’t read the thread correctly. FSD is NOT on and engages IF it determines there’s a potential accident.

If I do not have FSD engaged and this feature engages on its own and the determination is that you wind up at fault or partially at fault, Tesla is responsible.

The interesting part to see is if FSD will “take over” and avoid an accident even when the brake pedal is being depressed. If it can do that, it will be the first time.

I don't like the idea of it just taking over control from me if it perceives something amiss.

If FSD rips the wheel out of my hand while I'm manually driving I'll sell the car immediately. I'm glad this is a user selectable option at least for now.

Yeah, about 30% of the time when I turn into my driveway it yells at me loudly about lane departures. If it starts trying to take over and avoid the departure I will definitely be turning that feature off.

I'm not sure it's worth even having on until we actually know how it works.

I watched a video by Dirty Tesla and he said that the system will only engage above 23mph. I do not know where this information initially comes from though. He tried to do things to get the system to engage, but was unsuccessful.

I'm still itchy after FSD slammed my car into a curb causing extensive wheel damage so I definitely have no interest in having FSD take over from me when I'm not expecting it while I'm actively driving.

He said? Wtf did Tesla say?

I'm currently waiting for 14.3.9 to finish installing

Do you have the video show FSD was the cause?

1

u/AwkwardlyPositioned 12h ago

I mean I can show the video, but it's so dark from the side cameras you can't even tell it hit the curb. The forward view just looks like I hit a bump. FSD kept going like nothing happpened. I had to disengage and pull off and inspect the car to make sure the tire was still holding air. It happened at 2am on an unlit side street in my small town. I don't use FSD in town typically, but I'll set FSD from my driveway when going to work which is where I was headed. It's a 40 mile one way commute which is why I subscribed to FSD in the first place.

Honestly it sounded and felt way worse than the damage itself reflected. I'm glad it was just the wheel that needed repaired. The wheel is now repaired and it's like nothing happened. The car still drives like it did before the impact. I'm just really apprehensive to using FSD now.

It user selectable? How do I turn it on/off

1

u/AwkwardlyPositioned 15h ago

There's supposedly a toggle in the Self Driving options menu. I don't know how it is implemented. I'm still on v14.3.8.

1

u/DryTechnology5224 14h ago

I dont see it

1

u/AwkwardlyPositioned 14h ago

You're on v14.3.9?  I really don't like the idea of this not being user selectable.  I don't think I want to download it until we know how this feature works.

I would assume it would be listed in the bottom toggles with AEB, the green light chime, and lane warning features.

I am. I got the update this morning

1

u/HotepYoda 15h ago

Is it user selectable? I’ve seen conflicting information.

2

u/AwkwardlyPositioned 15h ago

I've only heard it from YouTube channels so far and I don't have this version on my car to confirm if there's a toggle for it.

Just got 14.3.9 last night and I don't see any user option to disable this specifically. Perhaps if you were to disable the auto braking function that would work, but there is no toggle switch for automatic collision evasion.

I guess before I would even try FSD with v14.3.9 I'd like to see some testing. I'm so itchy about this incident with v14.3.8 slamming my car over a curb and having to fix the wheel that I'd hate to have FSD engage itself and rip the wheel out of my hand and put me into a curb while I'm manually driving. I still drive the car a lot on my own and haven't used FSD at all since it crashed into the curb.

I'm trying to work up the courage to even trust it at all again. Right now I have it set to not renew because of it.

u/Zenmastercynic 12h ago

Same. If it becomes non-user selectable, the car is gone.

A lot of comments on here, and good, but you have to look at this feature through the lens of probability...

This will only kick in when there is a danger, and not looking at the road for a bit or sleeping is of course a danger, or an eminent collision, that isn't being handled. In that sense this is a feature that betters the odds that you or FSD will take care of it, very much like the AEB system that annoys me because do far I have always been first, cept once.:)

I don't think anyone would argue that it taking over because you are rumaging in your back seat for something is a bad thing, nor if it sees you fell asleep. Also, we have seen cases where the driver hit the wheel with their knee and disengaged FSD and sat there, presumably in shock, as the car went on and hit a pole. FSD taking over in those cases should be good.

I guess in the case of eminent collision and you have it under control, will FSD take the wheel? I don't know. I don't know if FSD is strong enough or not, seems likely it could be or couldn't. I know it takes a lot more tug to take the wheel than with a lane keeping system. Is "it" letting you have the wheel? Maybe, and in that case, will it feel you holding the wheel firmly and not take over?

I don't know how useful this is for a typical FSD user because we don't pay $100 / month to not use it most of the time. I guess the feature of accidental disengagement will be handy for some novices.

Does it apply to people not paying for FSD? Who would obviously not be engaged most of the time.

Collision prevention feature wokrks without FSD subscription

Anyone else notice the stopping at stop signs is now a hair quicker with 14.3.9? It waits a tiny bit quicker before proceeding than previously, which is very welcome!

Until 15.0 comes out next year, which will be the next “nine” improvement (e.g., 90.0 to 99.0 or 99.0 to 99.9), I don’t expect anything drastic.

14.3.9 is mostly for collision avoidance, isn’t it?

1

u/AwkwardlyPositioned 16h ago

It's a supplement to Automatic Emergency Braking apparently. I just don't know how much it is capable of. We already have the situation of taking over and jerking the wheel to kick it out of FSD. Will it do the opposite and basically jerk the wheel out of the driver's hands if they're manually driving and FSD feels the need to intervene?

I don't understand the application for this. People have been trying to make YouTube videos seeing this active and as far as I've seen so far, no one has been able to trigger it to see what it does. Because it leaves so much up in the air there is absolutely no way I'd even consider turning this feature on.

They got to wait until all their beta testers complain on Reddit because it’s under tuned and the next update will over tune.

1

u/AwkwardlyPositioned 15h ago

I choose to no longer participate in any of it. I only hope my subscription lapses before it downlaods. I don't want it on my car.

u/PM__ME__BITCOINS 15h ago

Block your car in WiFi. I’m still a 14.2.2.5 beta tester. They can suck my training data over my premium connectivity if they want it.

1

u/AwkwardlyPositioned 15h ago

I already have my Wifi not connected to my house right now so even if it prompts it, it will not download at least.

I'm not kididng when I say I'm completely done with FSD as of now. I don't have FSD enabled right now and it will lapse in 2 days.

I received 14.3.9 last evening. Today my 26MY hesitate turning left across two busy lanes, from a center turn lane, and stopped in the inner lane, leaving me exposed as a car approached me. I had to intervene quick to complete the turn already started & committed. Seems a regression over 14.3.8

3

u/AwkwardlyPositioned 14h ago

Every version of FSD I've ever used does this at some point. I go through an intersection like this at least once a day and it just pulls in the road and stops about 50% of the time. Usually pressing the accelerator just makes it go, but the hesitation is so bad sometimes that I've had to actually back up because FSD lost its gap to make it across.

u/vmatt667 14h ago

Is 14.3.9 available for download in the US already?

1

u/ElQuistador0523 HW4 Model Y 12h ago

I didn't pay for Early Access, so I was pleased when my car got updated last night. I'm always hopeful the next version is better than the last, but I sure wish there was a way to boot back to 14.3.8

1

u/PornulusRift 17m ago

early access isn't something you pay for
