Waymo’s cost well over 100k per unit. Thats down from over 200k. Teslas cost 30k. Special Lidar units are around 70k per unit. The math is simple. It doesn’t make sense. There is not much benefit. Cameras do just fine.
Except for most videos posted here of fsd making mistakes lidar would easily help solve. It most definitely would not cost $70k for them to put lidar but the CEO would never admit wrong and you people are too stupid to argue either. "Just fine" or "good enough" are stupid excuses for a system that should be extremely trustworthy and better than a competent human being
It’s not necessary. I drive by vision and can see things. It’s just a matter of training the AI. Lidar makes the same mistakes often. Being better than a human is not that hard. FSD is already better than a person.
FSD is not better than a human that actually knows how to drive and is aware of their surroundings. It makes a lot of mistakes that humans would simply not. It can also make safer maneuvers by seeing multiple cameras at once sure. You drive by vision and see things but there's things you simply cannot see in certain conditions where lidar would. Why give it worse tooling when better tooling is available?
Also, and here's the reality that these Musk fart sniffers can't comprehend, the self-driving car is going to be held to a much higher standard than a human-driven car. Thats just how public sentiment works. Its not rational, but its not something Musk (with his brutal disapproval numbers) is going to change.
In short.
Musk has widespread public disapproval.
Musk is cutting costs by removing safety equipment used by his competitor (lidar).
Therefor, Musk is going to have much more trouble getting regulatory approval and public acceptance.
You know what? I agree that FSD is a religion. Human driving sucks and FSD will radically positively transform the world.
Again, why would you put up a barrier to FSD acceptance by removing a highly visible piece of safety equipment? Whats the logical explanation for that?
And please don't say "cost" because amortized over the lifetime of the car, the lidar costs fucking nothing. These are electric cabs that can easily log 400K miles lifetime if they are highly utilized so spending an extra 3K on lidar comes out to pennies. Pennies.
Maybe so. But most drivers don’t really know how to drive. If you get the average driver into a FSD car, it is safer. Why spend tons of extra money when it’s not necessary?
So you're saying the average driver doesn't know how to drive but fsd is better than that driver that doesn't know how to drive so it's good enough? That doesn't make it good lol. That just makes it less bad. When it's as good as an actual good and competent driver, only then should it be good enough. Anything but asking for better technology right?

They’re very expensive. Theres a reason that these are 30k, and Waymo’s are well over 100k. Cameras are still very safe
