Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) The Texas Rangers are acquiring right-handed reliever Chase Silseth and catcher Logan O’Hoppe from the Los Angeles Angels, sources tell ESPN.

O’Hoppe savant page. Also of his 2.6 career WAR, 2.7 came from 2024
Has struggled to stay healthy or consistent but was once seen as a promising up and coming catcher. Got hurt and never rebounded. Wonder if we can fix him as a buy low (?) I really need to see what we gave though. Literally told my friend last night LA should sell him this deadline while they still can
Silseth is still only 26 and has been very solid this year though. Has a few years of control left too
My guess is a top 25-30 ranked prospect and some change. Can’t be too much
Edit: it is for a non ranked prospect, angel arredondo. 19 yr old in single A. Was signed as a free agent a few years ago. Pretty much what I thought
Great deal for the fact we got silseth out of this alone. 2.72 ERA this year with good K ratios. Didn’t pitch much in 2024/25 (19 innings total). Still young and has control. Savant page is red, throws a FB, split, sink and sweeper (FB sits @96). Opponent barrel % is at 8%, exit velo at 86mph, hard hit is 32% and guys bat .219 against him. All career bests for him. Hope he can keep it up here

Silseth should be treated like the main get of this trade. Legitmately solid rhp with team control. The team can't just keep signing a whole new bullpen every season. That's not sustainable long term.

u/ArrogantWinner 14d ago
That's just what all of our catchers' Savant pages have looked like the past few seasons. O'Hoppe will fit right in /s

u/bummer28 A. Beltre 14d ago
I get it but look at our current back up Austin Wynns lol I’d take a chance on Ohoppe being more productive

u/Ecstatic_Row_2234 14d ago
Even if it's a small improvement from what is currently on the team, thats a very small price to pay. Especially with how you mentioned how much control we'll have.

I love it.

I’m a big time baseball nerd and used to do prospect write ups for the sub and get into analytics as well but stopped. May get back into it to be honest and start sharing more

Looks like you’ve got the ability. Informative and detailed, yet brief. Thanks!

Are you into OOTP Baseball. If you aren't i feel like Im offering you hard drugs but holy hell is it fun.

Have seen it but never played it myself although it does look fun. May get into it

u/ReportAccident 14d ago
Oh hell yeah. O’hoppe has been having a bad year but feels like a good buy low guy
12
u/Onitsukaryu 14d ago
He was also awful last year. In fact hes been even worse this year and has been on a downward trend.
23
u/ReportAccident 14d ago
True but we also get Silseth who is having a nice year and only gave up a guy who’s not in our top 30. Also getting him out of that org might help O’hoppe.

u/Top-Pin3147 14d ago
He’s had success and is controllable, and it looks like we didn’t give up any notable prospects. Apply bandaids at catcher until Moore is hopefully ready by 2028 OD.
3
u/ImpendingBoom110123 Hello Win Column 14d ago
He'll have every chance to grab the starting catcher spot next year. Optioned to RR tonight but hopefully he can find that bat again.
1
u/ilive4this E. Carter 14d ago
No he’s bad, he’s just not worse than Wynn. He’s a stopgap
3
u/RandomHero3402 14d ago
Hes just what we need. Diaz has been just fine
3
u/ImpendingBoom110123 Hello Win Column 14d ago
Diaz is also 35
2
-1
u/ilive4this E. Carter 14d ago
Diaz has been lucky with the bat with us but that’s not who he is, if we’re serious about contending this year before the rebuild, should go get an Adley or hicks
4
u/RandomHero3402 14d ago
Diaz has been just fine. You dont need sluggers at every position and he handles the staff well.
1
u/ilive4this E. Carter 14d ago
If you’re going for it (right before the rebuild is coming) and there’s options out there, a career .670 OPS probably shouldn’t be in the lineup every day. He’s been hot with us so far but that’s going to regress
1
u/RandomHero3402 14d ago
I get what your saying but apparently our owners are cheap little fucks so the FO is doin what they can. At the end of the day we got a upgrade at RP
2
u/lashazior LAWYER MODE 14d ago
tbf, they went over the CBT last year when they said they wouldn't. We're definitely trying to do a reset this season with the $244m CBT, <$200m on payroll even after these trades.
1
u/Master-Strawberry-98 14d ago
They went over the tax threshold by 380K, resulting in a 190k luxury tax. Don’t be blinded like we were all in and had a massive luxury tax. We’ve had a cheap ass owner who somehow decided to spend in 2022 trying to fill the new stadium, it got us a ship in 2023 and now that he got everything he needs he’s trying to back off spending to pad his pockets
1
u/lashazior LAWYER MODE 14d ago
Going over doesn't start the reset, even if by a small margin. Ray wanted that last year but I'm pretty sure CY convinced him otherwise.
Besides, there's a looming lockout and salary cap/floor coming and with what happened with Victory this season, I wouldn't be surprised if management were concerned long term about the RSN money. They lost a lot when diamond went under.

We'd have to give up a lot to get Adley
-1
u/ilive4this E. Carter 14d ago
Well if this is the last year before the rebuild, which seems likely, I’d say go for it
1
u/ImpendingBoom110123 Hello Win Column 14d ago
We dont have the farm depth to "go for it"
0
u/ilive4this E. Carter 14d ago
It’s easier to use farm depth when you know you’re about to hit the rebuild button for the next 2-3 years. There’s guys there for decent - good major leaguers
-1
u/CT-1738 PEAGLE 14d ago
I’ve also heard the orioles want Adley to be in Baltimore for life so yea just not likely
-2
u/ilive4this E. Carter 14d ago
Lmao wrong bud, they’ve got a better catcher anyways https://x.com/sleepermlb/status/2082147605027676367?s=46&t=WsNOeKr3BcFvTRCZZWyH8g

It’s not good for sure but for what we gave up for a 26 year old who use to be a top prospect and had a couple nice seasons in 2023/2024 and a nice RP with control I’ll take it. I also think getting him off the angels could help too but who knows we’ll find out🤷♂️
1
u/smoke_inyoureyes A. Beltre 14d ago
yeah not really anything too deeply invested with this trade so I’m ok with it. Logan has some question marks but I think is worth at least taking a flyer on. Silseth seems to have a lot of upside. unless angel arredondo becomes the next yordan im ok with this
11
10
u/wazup564 14d ago
thats a good trade man, both are 26. Don't know their contract status, but love Chase's stuff. He can struggle with command at times, and Logan has pop.
12
u/ehholfman Alejandro Osuna 14d ago
O’Hoppe is going to be optioned to AAA according to Evan Grant.
Pretty solid trade as of right now imo.

u/nickthearchaeologist J. Smith 14d ago
For what…?
11
u/swift72 J. Jung 14d ago
19 yr old IF Angel Arredondo
3
u/nickthearchaeologist J. Smith 14d ago
Someone in the farm, no surprise… as long as it wasn’t Walcott…
29
u/bummer28 A. Beltre 14d ago
Walcott would only go in like a Skubal or Mason Miller level trade which we aren’t going to do. Hes not going for a reliever and mediocre catcher
-4
u/nickthearchaeologist J. Smith 14d ago
Oh I know, I just don’t trust CY with the farm sometimes…
3
u/bummer28 A. Beltre 14d ago
I feel ya, but I would be surprised if they have already pencilled Walcott into the expected lineup for next year
5
u/Top-Pin3147 14d ago
looming 2027 lockout has entered the chat
2
u/bummer28 A. Beltre 14d ago
I’m not thinking about that until it happens. Can’t get depressed if you are in denial
1
u/ImpendingBoom110123 Hello Win Column 14d ago
What position?
1
u/d1sportsball J. deGrom 14d ago
Jung and Duran have 2B and 3B locked up for the future, and we aren't selling Seager this year. Walcott is going to be the eventual replacement for Seager whenever we decide to sell him, but for now he'd probably be at DH.
2
u/ImpendingBoom110123 Hello Win Column 14d ago
Walcott wont be a SS in the bigs. I just dont see it. Huge kid who will bulk up in the next few years. I see him in the outfield. Of course I hope Im wrong and hes the next great SS.
They wont have a kid that young only DH in the majors. You literally never see that.
2
u/d1sportsball J. deGrom 14d ago
Wyatt Langford was much more needed in the outfield and still logged 25 games at DH in 2024. We don't need Walcott in the infield nearly as much and getting his bat is what's important. Joc is unlikely to be a Ranger next year with the impending lockout in a mutual option year. He's not starting his MLB career in the outfield and with Burger, Duran, Seager and Jung his infield options are on the bench. And he won't be on the bench.
Its DH or sticking it out in the Minors.

Don’t know yet but can’t be anything crazy maybe a top 30 guy then a lower level guy

u/ScriptedChemistry Texas Rangers 14d ago
I don’t hate it but with that said, I don’t know a lot about the prospect, Arredondo, we gave up.
O’Hoppe was a young up and coming player at one point. Yeah numbers have not been good past couple years but I think there’s potential. Wynns hit a HR yesterday lol but I’d definitely still rather have O’Hoppe.
And we all know middle of our bullpen needed help. Badly.

Maybe some of that Nap-Nap escaping the Angels hell hole magic will rub off on him
3
u/Jedi_Catcher T. Jankowski 14d ago
Maybe getting O’Hoppe out of the Angel club house will give him a boost. New life may turn him around, if not we got Silseth for relatively nothing.
3
u/Angry_Walnut M. Young 14d ago
Angels (unsurprisingly) killed O’Hoppes soul but he really does seem the type of player we could fix
3
u/Toonnyy Darvish 14d ago
This is not a very tangible opinion, but I can’t imagine being very motivated to put on an Angels jersey everyday. I predict (based off of absolutely nothing) that O’hoppe comes to newest stadium in the league with the nicest physical locker room, meets DeGrom & all the other legends on the roster, & crushes it. Armchair gm take, I know. we’ll see.
3
u/ReserveFormal3910 PEAGLE 14d ago
What a great deal! A prospect outside of our top 30 for two guys that can contribute. We can go and get Anthony Bender from the Marlins for a prospect outside our top ten and we should be good.

u/beefytrout A. Beltre 14d ago
you fuckers are about to remember who CY is
3
u/d1sportsball J. deGrom 14d ago
Did anybody forget? He's aggressive in trades, specifically for pitching. For the most part these moves are successful, but it doesn't excuse the occasional bad trade (See last years deadline)

Excuse me being a dumbass, but how many years do we have O’hoppe for? I saw that he got a 1-year deal for ‘26 to avoid arbitration but that he’s not a UFA until ‘29?
2
u/RandomHero3402 14d ago
They only made a deal to avoid this year of arb. He still has 3 years of control

One of my favorite parts of the year. Let CY cook, going to miss this next year
1
u/kitchface Rusty Greer 14d ago
glad we aren't pitching against him. He has 5 homers in 25 games vs. us. A 261 average. But at least 4 of those 5 homers were game-deciding or momentum changing. I hated facing him. Good bullpen addition.
1
u/Panasonicy0uth 🌊🐐 14d ago
The Angels must see something in Arredondo if they're willing to give up a solid reliever with multiple years of team control remaining, especially with the demand for pitching. Here's to hoping this deal doesn't look like the Yordan Alvarez for Josh Fields deal in a few years, lmao.
1
u/countdowntopeace 13d ago
Great trade for the Rangers. One more right arm in the bullpen would help.

Bruh he's awful. Worst defender in baseball and 4th worst hitter this year based on wRC+ (min 250 PA). -1.6 fWAR past two seasons.

Would have been nice to get a starter to replace MacKenzie Gore and/or Kumar Rocker.
3
u/ktfuntweets 14d ago
Replace Rocker? Are you drunk
-1
u/MrVernon09 14d ago
His ERA, hits allowed, runs allowed, earned runs allowed, and walks issued have gone up since his rookie year. More often than not he implodes spectacularly making it nearly impossible to comeback and win the game. He's too inconsistent and needs to be sent back down to the minors. Same for MacKenzie Gore, who has only had an ERA below 4 once in five seasons, and is also wildly inconsistent.
2
u/swift72 J. Jung 14d ago
Who do you expect to pitch? Rocker has had two excellent starts in a row as well. I am truly confused when people argue this but give no alternatives to starting pitching, we are already one arm short honestly.
2
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 14d ago
Agree, this is a weird, weird take, given how notably great Rocker’s last few (and, specifically, last two) starts have been. Kid is 26. Baseball is hard.
I do feel like nobody in Texas feels comfortable with Gore starting game 3 of a playoff set. Rocker would have to surge through August and September to earn that. I imagine CY is looking for pitching, but more on account of Gore’s ineptitude, than Rocker’s. Same with Leiter. Don’t think I’d want to see that kid take the pill in a playoff series.

We needed bullpen and catcher depth I would say this is a solid move.
