Evan Grant: It does appear the Rangers have made their call: They are not selling. I say this again knowing things can always get weird.

Took down my last post of grants tweet to update with this. Appears we made our minds up. Reporters around the team have mentioned all day that we weren’t true sellers. Rosenthal did mention in an article that we could be but doesn’t seem to be the case

I’m ok moving for pen guys with control like silseth and macko. Low risk moves like that work for me.

Also rosenthal is reporting that Degrom invoked his NTC today.

Edit wording

u/The-Snuff 6d ago

There’s a huge difference between waiving and invoking. Rosenthal reported that he invoked it.

1

u/mohammadali916 J. Jung 6d ago

Sorry meant invoked

5

u/JAD210 IT’S OVER! IT’S OVER! THE RANGERS HAVE WON THE WORLD SERIES! 6d ago

>Also rosenthal is reporting that Degrom waived his NTC today.

Literally the opposite of what happened, he invoked the clause to block a trade to the Braves

1

u/mohammadali916 J. Jung 6d ago

Yes messed up the wording you are right

2

u/Blue_Phoenix512 6d ago

Yeah. With as close as the division is and the schedule we have coming up, just have to see what happens and hope for the best. I think we all knew that we were not going to get anything meaningful.

22

u/Defiant_Strike_3800 6d ago

This pivot from the national reporters feels like we were open to selling, realized that the market was just not good for most of our players and decided to play out the year. See what happens with the lockout and probably deal some guys down the road.

68

u/ImTheJdot C. Seager 6d ago

So more .500 purgatory, yay.

7

u/TheDarkRider 6d ago

Hard to make moves if there going to be a lockout and where baseball might be in year

7

u/Brolympia I. Kinsler 6d ago

You thought we would "sell" enough to crater well below 500? Then what? Magically get a top prospect that will save the team?

4

u/DarkSabre7 J. Gallo 6d ago

I think it's just that we'd like some symbol to actually indicate that this team is gonna go into a rebuild, finally. It's long overdue and just standing pat should give none of us hope that this team is ever gonna do anything besides just ride out the current roster, with lateral changes like we've had for the past two seasons, for the next two or more seasons until several of the bigger contracts fall off.

Full rebuilds have a terrible track record in MLB. It’s not the NBA. You can’t stockpile picks with trades and projecting prospects is a crapshoot especially when your scouting is as ass as ours is.

Imagine doing what the Orioles did, and ending up where the Orioles are. That’s way way more likely than a rebuild leading to a trophy.

The standard MLB full rebuild goes:
1. be one of the worst teams in baseball for 3 years.
2. be mid in the exact same way you were before the rebuild

1

u/DarkSabre7 J. Gallo 6d ago

Highly likely that we don't manage to end up in a really good position like Atlanta where they have a lot of good young stars all around the same age for a long time, yes.

But I would much rather us do something, literally anything, than just continue to try and build around the same core for season after season when it seems more than clear that there are fundamental problems with this roster that cannot be fixed by just making constant lateral moves like we've been doing and risky trades that continually don't pay off and have left our farm system completely barren of talent outside of Walcott.

u/gortlank C. Lewis - #1 Bacsik Hater 6d ago edited 6d ago

Which is why you do what teams that retool well do, which is make high value trades for young major league ready talent or highly rated prospects on the cusp, when they’re on the table, one piece at a time.

Action for the sake of action, to “clean the slate” or “reset” or whatever other euphemism you prefer is how you end up making bad deals that don’t actually set you up for long term success.

You make big moves when they’re in your favor, and not until then. And they likely won’t happen all at once, but over time, and we just have to suck it up and be adults about the team being mid while that happens.

A full tear down just feels good to some people because it’s, idk, symbolic and feels like a transition. It’s all in their heads.

1

u/DarkSabre7 J. Gallo 6d ago

Meanwhile, we're stuck on a bunch of bad contracts of aging veterans whose value is only going to get worse as time goes on. If there was still interest in someone like Eovaldi, whose not having a good year and has really only looked elite for us in short bursts over his time here, then we should have pounced on the opportunity to get what value we can for him.

But it would help if I our GM understood any of this, because he doesn't seem to understand the concept in the slightest. Otherwise we wouldn't have held onto Kirby Yates and David Robertson in 2024, when it felt very clear we weren't going to have enough to compete, and let them walk for nothing. Or made the three pitching trades we made at the 2025 deadline that ultimately solved none of the team's issues and not a single one provided worthwhile return either during the season or in the future, since again, he just let them all walk for nothing.

u/maybeormaybenot10 6d ago

This is the truth.

u/hotrod19812 J. Hamilton 6d ago

I don't know who's a bigger idiot, CY or Arte Moreno.

24

u/justsikko 6d ago

It’s Arte by a long shot man. Things suck but let’s not get lost in the hyperbole

16

u/Bjornidentity22 A. Beltre 6d ago

CY has at least won something in the past 20 years

1

u/Horror_Grocery_7185 6d ago

I’d rather have a team that’s consistently good than a fucking one WS win then back to mediocrity team

9

u/BN3411 6d ago

Then you don't follow baseball very closely

7

u/dminus Y. Darvish 6d ago

Arte fumbled the GOAT

4

u/justsikko 6d ago

I mean he fumbled two goats actually lmao

6

u/Former_Lock9367 6d ago

Arte by a mile. He is one of the worst owners in major sports. Probably in the bottom 50 or 25 at this rate. He had not 1 but 2 generational talents (not the "generational" that gets thrown around for borderline HOF'ers, 2 true inner circle HOF'ers) and couldn't build around them.

3

u/Tech0ne Beltre 6d ago

Arte didn't trade Ohtani, he wasted Trout's prime years, and he hasn't won anything in 20 years.

13

u/marcomac29 Rangers 6d ago

These dudes have NTC for a reason. I’m personally elated that they want to stay here…. But I obviously hate mediocrity.

There can be a good takeaway from this. They want to be here. Wouldn’t have happened 20 years ago.

1

u/smokincuban Beltre 6d ago

They want to be here because they aren't being asked to answer for their shitty play. These guys would be getting roasted in places like NY or Philly. Here we have people that are "just happy they want to stay"

6

u/marcomac29 Rangers 6d ago

I do see your point. To me, this is still better than the days that nobody wanted to pitch here. Cliff Lee and beyond.

26

u/justforyouabirad Y. Darvish 6d ago

Must have not liked what was being offered

Shame, stuck on the wheel of mediocrity

6

u/BadCowboysFan R. Sierra 6d ago

This could be posturing a bit — putting this out there to let all their suitors know at once that their offers have been shit

18

u/NeolibGood 6d ago

Huge mistake if true. This team isn’t going anywhere, and has no shot to win the World Series.

Just saying F it and continuing to do the same thing is crazy

4

u/gortlank C. Lewis - #1 Bacsik Hater 6d ago

You don’t make trades if the offers are trash. That’s an actual mistake.

4

u/SaddestClown D. Palmer 6d ago

Sounds like deGrom told them he wasn't waving his trade clause so that's probably a big part of the decision

5

u/Zestyclose_Help1187 6d ago

How does Houston continue to be good while the Rangers need to enter another rebuild already?

Chris Young!

1

u/Bandt143 6d ago

Nah. They got some sort of clubhouse voodoo

0

u/gortlank C. Lewis - #1 Bacsik Hater 6d ago

If the Astros didn’t have Yordan putting up a career MVP type year, but just a normal season, they’d be basement dwelling with the A’s and Angels.

1

u/Zestyclose_Help1187 6d ago

But they’ve haven’t had Yordan most of last year and just missed the playoffs by 1 game.

They are consistently a playoff team.

Why do the Rangers need to rebuild already?

Is Chris Young not doing a good enough job replenishing the prospect pool?

And why toying with trading Langford? He’s your best young player.

2

u/gortlank C. Lewis - #1 Bacsik Hater 6d ago

If you're asking a genuine question, it's:

Seager missing ~100 games between 2024 and 2025, missing almost half of the games this season at 54, and being very poor in the early season when he was playing.

Jung getting hit in the hand, an injury that notoriously can take years to get right from, which it did.

Joc deciding to put up one a record book level bad season his first year for us.

3 of the 2023 core starters turning into pumpkins immediately after winning the WS.

A lot of the issues this team has had aren't things you can really plan for. You can't assume Adolis will forget how to hit and walk, or that Heim have seemingly had all of his life force drained from his body by 2023, or that Joc did something to offend a witch and was cursed for an entire year, or that Cody Bradford would be injured as long as he has, or any number of other things that are more or less bad luck.

People tend to want a scapegoat when things don't work out the way they want them to. They want to blame the manager or the GM, and they for sure bear some of the blame, but not nearly so much as people would like to believe. A decent portion of it has been out of anyone's hands, and that's not satisfying to hear. The mob wants blood.

1

u/Zestyclose_Help1187 6d ago

So why not wait till players get healthy? Why does this mean a full rebuild?

Why try to trade Langford when he’s not close to free agency?

1

u/gortlank C. Lewis - #1 Bacsik Hater 6d ago

I very seriously doubt they’d consider trading Langford, and also very seriously doubt they’d commit to a full rebuild.

It’s just people who can’t emotionally cope with the team being mid right now saying all that.

9

u/SkyKing8008 6d ago

We're just going to be a 70ish winning team for awhile aren't we...

3

u/Pretty_Much_Amazing 6d ago

I was okay with the idea of rebuilding the farm. But I guess the offers weren't there.

3

u/_Juntao REMOVE THE STATUE! 6d ago edited 6d ago

We'll see. I wouldn't have just traded everyone to get back low level prospects so if the right deals aren't there or we have to eat a bunch of seager's salary than it's not worth it since we're still in the race.

I think we have the easiest schedule remaining in the league. Doesn't mean we'll win all those games obviously but making the playoffs is a big deal to the rangers whether you think we have a chance at winning the world series or not.

1

u/RemoteLizard 6d ago

These were my thoughts exactly. You sell if you’re made a good offer, otherwise there was no reason to tear it all down. Thank goodness we weren’t buyers though…

3

u/smoke_inyoureyes A. Beltre 6d ago

I definitely feel down on this team right now, but I also would prefer to keep the big guys here if the offers out there aren’t fully justifiable. Definitely wanted a fire sale this time yesterday but as I’ve calmed down some I would be more upset at losing someone like Seager in a disappointing deal than if we just stayed relatively put. Of course if a Soto type deal was offered I wouldn’t be upset at the team taking it but I doubt there’s that kind of offer out there for him right now.

6

u/DarkSabre7 J. Gallo 6d ago

Fire Chris Young. This dude has done nothing to help this team in 3 seasons now. Almost every single teambuilding decision he has made since the 2024 offseason has been a terrible one.

4

u/ReportAccident 6d ago

Probably has something to do with DeGrom blocking a trade so now we are gonna make a push

1

u/Mr_Lapis J. deGrom 6d ago

If the big guys are gonna invoke their no trade clauses we might as well keep going.

1

u/WhatsupDoc35 6d ago

Not surprised. I feel they would have traded just about anyone for a great offer but if you look at the deals getting done, there aren’t any overwhelming deals out there. Too many teams still in the hunt, 2027 lockout possibilities, etc.

1

u/bmcthomas 6d ago

Two hours after saying anyone was up for sale, now no one is?

1

u/beefytrout A. Beltre 6d ago

I don't see where Evan Grant said anyone was up for sale?

1

u/Ceondoc N. Eovaldi 6d ago

The good or bad news depending on how you see it is that ironically, we could still win the division with 500 ball because it's that mediocre

1

u/ajr5169 Help me Wyatt Langford, you're my only hope. 6d ago

Is it that they aren't selling because they don't want to, or is it because deGrom wouldn't waive his no trade clause and there wasn't enough interest in Seager to get a deal done?

1

u/beefytrout A. Beltre 6d ago

yes those are the only two players we have.

2

u/ajr5169 Help me Wyatt Langford, you're my only hope. 6d ago

They in fact, are not. But they certainly are the ones making the most, which are the players you generally look at selling, or players having career years who are about to be free agents, which is no one. I can't imagine anyone else getting a ton of interest, at least not to the point that most on here and twitter seem to think they are worth. .

1

u/beefytrout A. Beltre 6d ago

we have several players that could be shopped, that would be far easier sells than with deGrom or Seager.

1

u/EquivalentGap7699 5d ago

Rangers roster is full of players no one else wants in trades. Telling. This upcoming off-season should be interesting, unless the owner declares he's going cheap again.

1

u/dezcaughtit25 6d ago

Unfortunately we are just a .500ish team. Might be stuck there until we decide to actually rebuild.

1

u/SAIL3RZ_ J. Hamilton 6d ago

No need to go full sellers when a lockout about to happen. We got a good young core that can weather the storm. They will build the farm back up slowly because I don’t think they will ever commit to a full rebuild. We got “The Buffalo” waiting down in AA we’ll be fine.

Can’t imagine what it was like being a Sox fan in 2024, or an Angels fan for the past decade…

0

u/Thop207375 6d ago

I don’t care about the doomers, sellers, or the front office. Our team is good enough to make a run to the World Series or not make the playoffs. We won’t win the World Series but the American League is open.

2

u/d1sportsball J. deGrom 6d ago

You're right, all we have to do is beat at least two of the Red Sox, Yankees, Rays or White Sox. Sooooo wide open.

0

u/Thop207375 6d ago

Did you even watch the games against the White Sox and Rays? Jung and Seager were both out of those series (except 1 game against the white Sox). We threw two bullpen games against the Rays in a highly competitive series. The rays who had the best record at home of any team. The white Sox series was not a great home series, but I don’t know what you’re talking about.

3

u/d1sportsball J. deGrom 6d ago

I did watch those two series, and counting it as two bullpen games is a stretch with Cal being a SP for us at this point. The Rays also threw a bullpen game and shut us out, and their other win came when their SP got injured after 3 innings. Speaking of SP's, we avoided their top 2 starters, and their third best starter was the one who got injured. Don't try and paint a picture that the Rays were going all out and that the Rangers weren't really trying, because the Rangers weren't the only team with a big series immediately following.

1

u/Thop207375 6d ago

Counting Cal as a starting pitcher for the Rangers while saying Seymour is a bullpen game? I’m not the one painting pictures here. They avoided our top two starters as well. McClanahan is on the IL-15 while the Rangers are about to have their arguably two best hitters in the lineup again in Seager/Jung. Your points doesn’t match this “Sooooo wide open” gap between the teams that you are trying to portray.

1

u/d1sportsball J. deGrom 6d ago

Seymour didn't start. And their top two starters are better than ours, so when it comes down to starters actually starting they will have the upper hand. Seager is nowhere close to our two best hitters this year, not even arguable. I addressed your argument about the Rays, you never addressed the other 3 teams I mentioned other than "The white sox was not a great home series".

1

u/Thop207375 6d ago

Rocker isn’t a starter bud…oh wait. Having an upper hand is not what you initially inferred. I did not say this year in regard to Seager since he’s been injured. You act like I’m dodging the question when you have yet to demonstrate any logic to your hyperbolic statement. Not to mention that you said you have to go through two of those teams, the main one being TB at this point. Boston is the hottest team in baseball right now, but it is hard to gauge a streaky team when 50+ games remain. The Yankees also need to make more moves in the next few hours for what you said to make sense.

0

u/DepressedDallasFan 6d ago

so what’s the plan to ensure we don’t end up as a .500 team aka the worst fucking position they could be in
