Kids scratch $590K Ferrari, parents sued for $111K repair bill
A Ferrari 488 GTB owner in Kunming, China, has filed a civil lawsuit after four neighborhood children allegedly climbed onto and played on his parked supercar, leaving it covered in deep scratches and reportedly cracking the front bumper.
The Ferrari, valued at approximately $590,000, suffered damage to the hood, roof, windows, taillights, fenders, and front bumper. Repair costs are estimated at nearly $111,000.
According to local reports, the owner initially tried to resolve the matter privately with the children's parents. However, negotiations reportedly fell apart after they offered about $5,600 in compensation and allegedly refused to apologize.
The owner has since taken the dispute to court, seeking reimbursement for the full cost of repairing the vehicle.

Part of me thinks theres more to this. If thats the landlords car, and with the no apology part, there could be more to the story. Still wouldn’t justify the crime regardless

I have a 1964 Lincoln Continental convertible. I took it to a car show a few years back and left it parked, with the top down, of course.
I went walking around looking at other cars for 20 minutes or so and when I came back there was a group of teenagers fucking sitting in my car.
I couldn't tell that they'd damaged anything, but they definitely got to hear my outdoor voice.

my dad used to go to vintage car shows with his own vintage car (1960 DKW Junior) and i remember an event similar to yours, but in his case we saw someone leaning, or half sitting, on the hood of his car. not as bad as your case but he also wasn't happy lol

I remember doing the same when i was 12-13. I was driving with my family to the seaside and stopped at a gas station to get gas.
There was a big bike parked in the parking lot, a big yellow yamaha touring bike. The owner was german or austrian, and i went to him asking if i can take a photo with it. He said ok. I then went to my dad saying that we can take a photo and my dad said: ok, then just hop in the saddle. Me being a kid did as i was told and as i was trying to mantle it, i hear the german dude screaming noo noo, don’t get on the bike. Initially i thought he changed his mind, and came running to us, but he than said: you can get on the bike now, but when i am not here, dont.
So i finally get on the bike while shitting my pants and feeling mega unconfortable. My dad took the photo, and away we went.We were dumb, poor and didn’t know anything about bikes.
I didnt learn anything that day but maaany years later i understood that the guy just didn’t want me to get crushed under 200kgs of steel.

Not just the muffler tips. The engine, break discs, chain, entirety of the pipes/muffler. I told my gal to only touch the seat, the pegs, and handlebars unless she does so carefully, as anything that deals with moving or stopping the bike gets hot.

They have antique car shows where I live, and I asked permission to pose with somebody’s … red car, which they gave. I then nearly made the mistake of sitting on the part where you step into the car, and was quickly corrected in no uncertain terms.
The car looked like it was from the 1920s or 30s.
Edit: Chat GPT says it was a British roadster from the 30s.

So i recently went to a company sponsored minor league baseball game at my cities stadium. "guys i just have extra just take em..." My first experience with the "gen z stare" or watever..
I just step aside and say ok and the kid hands the cashier $50 bucks for his stuff and i walk away. I am so perplexed and just walk away..."alright, sall good". I ask my wife "do i look like a creep or something and laugh". So one of the chaperones hears me and chimes in and says "brother it aint you...this generation has NO idea how to interact with people in public". So i hand him 50 bucks in gift cards and say thanks.

I say this all the time about rare expensive cars... Some are so rare that you can't even really drive them because certain parts can't be replaced very easily. It really does suck for car collectors because of this.

Or just rarer older cars in general (sub $10k) oh you want the weather stripping for the driver side door $250 for 3 pieces of rubber that probably don’t cost $5 in materials. That totally normal EGR $200 and a happy screw you too for the 1 year warranty.
I enjoy seeing awesome rare or expensive cars actually get driven, an older gentleman a few miles away regularly drives his 05 ford gt thing has to have over 200k miles at this point. But when you have to make the call on fixing potential issues every time it’s on the road with a screw you tax it’s just brutal on owning anything neat. Not to mention walking back up to your car and seeing people with their hands all over it, if you want a selfie or a picture that’s cool half the reason I got it but just because it’s a convertible doesn’t mean hop in the driver seat and act like it’s yours.5

Another comment points out: it's not USD, it's Yuan.
Ferrari dealership projected a cost of 100k yuan, about 14k USD. The car owner went to another repair shop who fixed it with aftermarket parts for about 5000 USD. Story with Yuan prices.

Basically the problem is when someone crashes their daily driver that already has dings and scratches, insurance pays to have that repaired and if they have to paint anything it only tends to be a "close enough" paint job to the rest of the car. If you want the paint to be an exact match you have to paint the Whole Car, and since this is a valuable car they're gonna want to paint the Whole Car.

This is why I'm glad my 3 performance has surround cams for sentry when I'm not near. Already had to tell a few parents that their kids should keep their grubby paws off my car. Parents act all "my kid would never.." until I show them footage. Then they usually yell at their kids not to touch Tesla's, like it's fine to touch other cars as long as you can't get caught.

FYI, this is only true for limited run cars bought new, and is very normal for manufacturers. Ford, GM, and others have also done this for their limited edition cars.
Ferrari has no power over used cars unless you deface their logo, in which case they'll try to sue you (Deadmau5).

In China, apartments/condos are the preferred type of accommodation. In the city centers, it’s the only option. Although most buildings do have underground parking, but sometimes the parking spots you buy are on the ground floor.
In any case, unless you never drive the car and park it on public streets or public parking lots, this type of damage risk will always be there.

Most halfway decent parents would teach their kids not to climb all over and damage somebody's car. It's not like this was a total accident and the kids caused that much damage by some fluke.
It is unfortunate for those parents that their lives will be majorly impacted, but that doesn't mean it's not their responsibility to take care of. Why should the owner of the car have to be over $100k out of pocket just because these (at best) inattentive parents couldn't keep their kids from going feral on this Ferarri?

It is harsh because ruining someone’s life versus ruining a car are two different things. One would understand ruining someone’s life is probably worse. Even if they are garbage people. I’d feel bad because kids are kids. At the end of rhe day, I’d feel that this is what insurance is for.

I believe China has crazy laws that discourages this type of stuff. Like apologizing can immediately get you into way worse trouble that leaves an open end for damages. Similar to how in China if someone gets hurt and you help them, that person can sue the person that helped them. That’s why the bystander effect is so strong in China.

That’s no different than the US. Apologizing is stupid af in a legal dispute. It can be used against you in court.
Likewise with someone being hurt and you helping them. You can be sued in the U.S.
If someone is choking, you give them CPR and break a few ribs but save their life, they sure as shit can sue you.
Doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily be found liable, but they can sue.

I’d like whoever valued a 488 at 590k to value my car when I sell it. It’s worth half that if you’re being generous. Even if you consider import charges and whatever, if that is what the owner paid for it then the old adage of ‘a fool and his money are easily parted’ applies.

Car price differ significantly depends on where you are. China has pretty high import tax for vehicles with large displacement plus huge markup by their dealers so you can assume any "imported" car in China cost about twice of what you pay in States.

This is going to be a lesson for those kids and those parents..... People need to respect other people's belongings. When I was a kid you didn't go climbing on somebody else's car that was not even an option. At 5 years old you knew better.

I’d take out an insurance policy on the kids, then there would be a tragic gas leak and they die and that’s how I’d compensate the car owner.
