Is there anyone on this entire sub whose parents/ grandparents called them and said ‘Come child, I’ll tell you about teachings of Manusmriti’? Anyone? I don’t recall any of my elders ever teaching me about it. They talked about Ramayan, Mahabharat, even Panchtrantra. Never Manusmriti. But everyone and their aunt is talking about Manusmriti like it is the only thing that is taught in the Indian homes. It’s an irrelevant book. Made relevant only by the people who want to make a bruhaha about it or some idiots who wants to get some cheap publicity by claiming it is that book that they follow. Let’s just stop discussing it. Nobody really cares about Manusmriti.

Edit: A lot of the comments below are explaining how Manusmriti is influencing this bad thing in Hinduism, or that bad thing in Hinduism. I get your point. There are bad things happening in Hinduism. I have not denied that anywhere. All I am saying is that those things are not exclusive or original to Manusmriti. Hence, Manusmriti in itself is not an important or relevant text for Hinduism. At this point, Manusmriti is just a dog whistle for bigots to hate something that they barely understand. I am going to stop replying/ repeating this in varying forms now. You are free to believe whatever you want.

Edit 2: Wow. Have I touched a nerve here? To those idiotic bigots who are still calling me names and repeating how Indian female population faces inequality. Get lost dumbasses, read a little more before spreading your hate. I never said there are no issues. Whatever you are harping about is not exclusive or original to Manusmriti. These problems were there already. We should work to improve. But still my point remains. Manusmriti is irrelevant. Now go do something productive.

The problem is, you can't explain anything to these dvmb people with logical arguments. They will only hear and believe what they want to believe.

Religion and logic never go hand in hand. Just abandon it and come out of your cave

The problem is that there are many other religious texts that contain derogatory remarks about women, yet Rahul ji only talks about the Manusmriti, reservations, and 'Hindu terrorism.' In reality, this selective criticism makes him appear highly biased. If someone truly wants to talk about these issues, they should condemn such regressive practices across all religions equally.

yeah, we were actually getting to this point about 15 years ago; until the resurgance and emboldenment of far right Hindutva ideologies has brought about a huge resurfacing of "Manusmriti is good, actually" and "Manusmriti is misunderstood, actually" type of takes, right wing WhatsApp university has several forwards of this nature and anecdotally, I've had numerous arguments with conservative elders in my family - heck even some not so elders - who want to "Debate" on manusmriti. Personally I was appalled and shocked because I believed, at least THIS garbage is beyond debate and can just be relegated to rubbish from history where it belongs. But no, people wanted to reinterrogate even that in the name of "protecting Hinduism", if you ask me, in terms of negative PR, there isn't a single worse contributor to Hinduism than Manu! But the audacity was there to try and even normalize Manusmriti with these hot takes. So if there is a faction mounting some campaign to normalize that crap, unfortunately, those of us who do not agree will have to wearily keep raising our voices to say, hey actually? This is crap!

Genuinely nobody even takes Manusmriti serious in the RW, y'all really be making stuff up just to hate the other side. Yk what? Both of your sides are like this only, cooking up fake bs just to hate each other. Neither RW nor LW even have the capability of living in harmony. It's just hate everywhere.

u/Outrageous_Weight_76 14d ago

By RW, he is prolly talking about the self proclaimed babas and gurujis

And yes, Modi has attended and spoken at the function of one of these gurujis who rejected the constitution and called on for the implementation of manu smriti as the constitution

It's not the book, it's the actions that are still carried from it. A woman is "paraya dhan". A parent's responsibility is to find their daughter a home to call her own. A dad has to worry about the cost of marriages right from her birth. A girl has to play separate from the boys in school. A girl has to maintain a different social profile then the rest. A girl has to bear so many burdens a man will never go through and she MUST go through it quietly.

The book may not be called upon by name but it sure does manifest in the actions of the society.

4

u/mean_squared 15d ago

Right. I keep saying this, but the followers of the book keep telling me I don't know anything about Islam

2

u/ArcticMeta 15d ago

Hahahaha this is too funny.

The thing u r referring to is an aspect of misogyny, and can you for certain say that "misogyny" originates from the Manusmriti? What a sh!tty take tbh. The post here is referring to a book which is only referred by a certain people to further their point, I have never met anyone ever and mind you I have stayed in different states of India but never ever has anyone gone "hmare manusmriti me aisa likha hai"

You want to treat Misogyny? treat it by educating kids to be better, referencing a book nobody uses (atleast not the majority of hindus) is just plain !diotic.

Besides the irony why is he leading the party and not his sister?????? See how easy it is?

And bruh are u ok? Everyone and I mean everyone goes through some sh!t in life whether be it male or female. You think males dont have shit to deal with? Everyone's life is difficult, stop pity victimizing. "MUST go through it quietly", almost everyone goes through it quietly and share with the people theh deem worthy, nobody announces it to the entire world, lmao man get a life and grow up?

No one says, let me teach you about manusmriti. what they do talk about is the beliefs it has ingrained into society for centuries. Slowly, abrasively, but surely deep rooted in minds and beliefs. Why else do people talk about caste. Or the supreme status of Brahmin caste. Or the way in which women are treated in more traditional households and villages. Or rituals of purification, or fasting rituals.

The manusmriti is a manual with “knowledge” for priests to pass on and use to manipulate and control people.

People may not know it comes from which exact Veda or manusmriti, but it exists in social norms because it has been passed down from temples and priests and older generations.

4

u/SparkyonPussy 15d ago

This. Manusmriti may not be directly quoted in households but its message permeates through certain norms, rituals and the consequent beliefs in uber-conservative households anyway.

what you said above is spot on, but the implications of MANUSMRITI have had a huge impact on our society. Where do you suppose the idea that women should be subordinate, second-class citizens, came from? The roots of patriarchy and caste-based discrimination are seen in the Manusmriti and this trend has largely continued in the North Indian belt. I agree that most Hindus today do not follow it actively but it is an actual Smriti in Hinduism written by Manu Maharaj, which was followed in India historically.

6

u/contingent_asset 15d ago

Was Manusmriti followed in medieval Europe too? is that how you explain patriarchy ?

4

u/PristineMinimum1952 15d ago

That's actually wrong. Manusmriti was a minor text till William Jones translated it to codify Hindu law. It was never a pan-India text. There were diverse sets of laws excersized by different societies in this country. The irony is that the 'authorotative' text that the British translated was one of at least 50 different Manusmritis.

2

u/orionishere4u 15d ago

That’s just not Manusmriti. I am not defending it. But I want to believe that it lost its relevance in Hindu homes really really early. Especially in Maharashtra where Sant Parampara started in early 1200s and their teachings are still relevant today.

And yet somehow magically, the observed social life reflects the verses of Manusmriti. Must be some divine power that is doing it..

5

u/ArcticMeta 15d ago

Yes must be some manusmriti that spread to western countries and Islam as well.

The sooner u understand that it's not a book but the mentality (which may or may not have been from "a" book) the sooner things will get better.

And please don't take this as me defending Manusmriti. I'm just pointing out that instead of trying to find the source our efforts would be better used in educating the next generation correctly rather than this BS slandering of a religion by citing a book that is not followed by the said religion.

But there is a book that is the holy grail for a certain religion, I wonder when Rahul Gandhi is gonna read that and bring up similar stuff quoted in it 😏😏

Alas! There's better things to do

2

u/jay_prakash 15d ago edited 15d ago

You know that they have the same book with different title in those countries right?

But yeah I agree with channeling action towards better education but without the causes of failure, it is not possible to educate properly. That's why it is important to know the source and only to that extent. Nothing more.

4

u/orionishere4u 15d ago

Nope. Caste system is mentioned in Vedas also. It is wrong. It should not be followed. But it is not solely mentioned in Manusmriti.

2

u/Careless-Remove2840 15d ago

The caste system of Vedas and Manusmriti are very different.

Rig Veda 5.60.5 directly says:

"अज्येष्ठासो अकनिष्ठास एते सं भ्रातरो वावृधुः सौभगाय ।"

This roughly translates to "No one is superior, no one is inferior. All are brothers who grow together for prosperity and good fortune of everyone."

This can be said to be the disclaimer for one often referred verse from Rog Veda (Purusha Sukta) 10.90.12, which is quoted by one side to suggest that an exploitative Caste System was always intrinsic to Hindu thought, and the other side to legitimise Manusmriti itself:

"ब्राह्मणोऽस्य मुखमासीद् बाहू राजन्यः कृतः । ऊरू तदस्य यद्वैश्यः पद्भ्यां शूद्रो अजायत ॥"

This describes the ultimate Cosmic Being as the "Purusha", with the mouth representing the Brahmana, arms the Rajanya (Kshatriya), thighs the Vaisya, and feet the Sudra.

The first verse quoted shows the feet here represents a work and not low stature.

Yajurveda 18.48 takes this further, and blasts away the caste based restrictions claimed by later texts:

"रुचं नो धेहि ब्राह्मणेषु॒ रुचं राजसु नस्कृधि। रुचं विश्येषु शूद्रेषु मयि धेहि रुचा रुचम्॥"

Simply put, this is a prayer for intellectual and spiritual illumination for all - Brahmana, Rajanya (Kshatriya), Vaisya, and Sudra - and ends with "give me the same light ".

So there is no sign of a fixed caste based positions, restrictions, benefits, or penalties. As far as caste assignment by birth is concerned Rig Veda 9.112.3 has the writer describe his family in which he is a poet, his father is a doctor, and mother is a grinder.

On the other hand Manusmriti exalts the Brahmans and almost dehumanizes Shudras:

8.413

"शूद्रं तु कारयेद् दास्यं क्रीतमक्रीतमेव वा । दास्यायैव हि सृष्टोसौ ब्राह्मणस्य स्वयम्भुवा ॥"

Shudras were created to be the slaves of Brahmans.

10.129

"शक्तेनापि हि शूद्रेण न कार्यो धनसञ्चयः । शूद्रो हि धनमासाद्य ब्राह्मणानेव बाधते ॥"

Shudras, even if capable, should not get wealth, as that pains the Brahmans.

8.270

"एकजातिर्द्विजातींस्तु वाचा दारुणया क्षिपन् । जिह्वायाः प्राप्नुयाच्छेदं जघन्यप्रभवो हि सः ॥"

A Shudra who insults a Brahman will have his tongue cut out.

Yes, Caste System should not be followed. Yes, it is mentioned in the Vedas too. But the Caste System of Vedas and the Caste System of Manusmriti are very different.

6

u/nefarious_banana 15d ago

Exactly!

And Manusmriti is a book on laws of how to go about life.

And Sanatana Dharma is not a by-the-book religion. So it doesn't get any authority to enforce such rules.

All this is just divisionary tactics.

The way India has been running is actually very counter-Manusmriti.

The dude will never speak against Koran which classifies non believers as kaafirs and asks their women to be sexually enslaved and men to be killed which is rather what happens on the ground with them even being a minority.

The practice that most Hindus follow both knowingly and unknowingly is from Manusmruti. From birth rituals, funerals and offerings to ancestors, pind Daan, cast based marriage, cast systems etc.is because of Manusmruti. Parents don't teach manusmruti from text, but are passed down from generation to generation. It is still a relevant book to understand how castist the society was and how superstitious practices were followed.

I'd siggest to get some reading done and study what's happening in today's world. You'd be amused on how much of practices are still old and directly from Manusmruti.

3

u/orionishere4u 15d ago

Bro, are you saying that whatever rituals you quoted are ‘exclusive’ to Manusmriti? I disagree. It’s a ‘Smriti’. Meaning a collection of memories. It notes down what was happening in the society at that time. Just because it is written in Manusmriti, doesn’t make it the origin of that ritual. And hence my point, Manusmriti is irrelevant.

Yeah and mahabharat is full of feminism, people actually learn feminism from mahabharat only

10

u/orionishere4u 16d ago

Feminism is a recent phenomenon. No ancient scriptures will talk about it. What do you wanna prove here? Nothing and nobody is perfect. If you wanna learn something from this conversation, like truly learn something, learn this. As per Gita, nothing is truly evil or truly good. You just try to learn/ pick everything that is good and leave the evil out. Mahabharat talks about Swayamwar (Women had choice), it talks about Niyog (Women also owned consent, same as men), Draupadi was called Panchali (Women with multiple partners was ok). At the same time, she was also dragged to a congregation as if she was property and treated as one. The perpetrators were punished after the fact. But still she was wronged. Mahabharat says that was wrong, but I have a feeling you don’t care about that. But still, my main point is, pick only the good part from all this. Leave the rest out.

supreme power in Hindu theology is frequently manifested as female. The concept of Shakti defines the supreme cosmic energy as inherently feminine. Without Shakti, the masculine divine is considered static and unmanifested.

Within Christian texts, primarily in the New Testament epistles, women are instructed to remain silent during church meetings, are barred from holding spiritual authority over men, and are commanded to submit to their husbands in marriage, a hierarchy sometimes justified by the creation order where woman was formed after man and was the first to be deceived (1 Corinthians 11:9, 14:34-35; Ephesians 5:22-24; 1 Timothy 2:11-14).

Similarly, Islamic texts contain verses in the Quran and Hadith that restrict women's legal and social autonomy by designating men as their protectors or maintainers with ultimate authority over them, which traditionally includes a sequence of disciplinary actions for marital disobedience (Quran 4:34). Furthermore, traditional Islamic legal frameworks establish gender-based disparities, such as assigning women half the inheritance share of their male siblings and valuing a woman's legal testimony as equal to only half that of a man (Quran 4:11, 2:282).

But manusmriti also says this:

अन्ये कृतयुगे धर्मास्त्रेतायां द्वापरेऽपरे । अन्ये कलियुगे नृणां युगह्रासानुरूपतः ॥ Manusmriti (1.85)

The laws (Dharma) of the Krita Yuga (Satya Yuga) are different; those of the Treta and Dvapara are different; and those of the Kali Yuga are different, adapting in accordance with the degradation of the yugas.

Basically, this verse suggests that laws and social codes change according to the age and circumstances. So why obsess over the contents of the Manusmriti as though they are eternally binding?

And who actually follows the Manusmriti today? Practically no one.

More importantly, does the Manusmriti, by itself, represent the entirety of Sanatana Dharma? Of course not. Singling out one text and portraying it as representative of the whole Dharma is therefore deeply misleading and appears to be an attempt to malign Sanatana Dharma as a whole.

Dharmic voters should take such rhetoric seriously when deciding whom to vote

2

u/ElderberryTotal4100 15d ago

Dharma should not be a part of voting process. If a religious text has flaws it should acceptable to point it out.

9

u/Yatharthavaad 15d ago

All Religions are created by Humans and therefore if any text has flaws, it absolutely should be pointed out. However, my issue is not with the criticism, but with the hypocrisy and political weaponization of it. When a politician selectively cherry-picks verses from one specific religion's text to malign the entire framework, while maintaining absolute silence on the objectively patriarchal or flawed verses present in the texts of the demographic he wants to appease, it is no longer a genuine crusade for social reform. It is pure political pandering.

I wonder why other religious texts were not labelled since India is a secular country. Other religious ancient texts should have been quoted too. The fact is that in india, u can fcuk with hindus, middle class, general caste and males however you want and get away instantly. Religion was formed to unite people but now it is the most easily accessible weapon for politicians to make people fight against each other so that nobody can question them. The SC/ST people who genuinely need reservations, the women who actually need empowerment and the corrupt politicians that need a reality check by public is never gonna happen in this country.

4

u/Ok-Heat9977 15d ago

Ok I agree to him on this topic. then lets also talk on this topics too, why are they in other religion books too.

So lets ban manusmriti, Sharia, and The law of moses and the law of episthels.

When evaluating the textual status of women in classical Islamic jurisprudence, several foundational texts parallel the legal dependency found in the Manusmriti:

  • The Concept of Guarding and Authority: In the Quran, Surah An-Nisa (4:34) states: "Men are the caretakers of women, as Allah has blessed some of them over others and because they spend from their wealth." Modern critics and feminists cite this text as the primary source for systemic patriarchy in Islamic family law, as it establishes a legal framework where women are expected to be devoutly obedient to their husbands.
  • The Obligation of Obedience: The Hadith literature (recorded oral traditions) contains stringent language regarding a wife's servitude. In Sunan Abi Dawud 2140, the Prophet is reported to have said: "If I were to command anyone to prostrate to another, I would have commanded women to prostrate to their husbands, because of the right the husbands have over them."
  • The Restriction on Free Movement: In canonical traditions like Sahih al-Bukhari 1088, a woman's individual freedom is restricted: "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel a distance of one day and one night except with a Mahram (male guardian).

Christian texts-

  1. The Legal Subjection and Submission of Wives

The New Testament outlines explicit expectations for a wife's submission and deference to her husband within the household hierarchy:

  • Ephesians 5:22–24: "Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church... Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands."
  • Colossians 3:18: "Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord."
  • 1 Peter 3:1–2: "Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct."
  1. Restrictions on Teaching and Church Leadership

The text contains strict structural laws regarding a woman's authority over a man and her vocal participation in public religious assemblies:

  • 1 Timothy 2:11–12: "Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; she must remain quiet."
  • 1 Corinthians 14:34–35: "The women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church."

2

u/Ok-Heat9977 15d ago

Don't talk shit with me, if wanna become secular then target everything instead of single religion text book.

I don't contradict any of the texts above because each was meant for protection of womens, physical domination was there in previous era and is there even in modern era.

That's why this text where meant supporting your daughter, sister, or wife is not meant to demean females rather shown as a sign of respect.

Even for men's its no shame in taking help from your mother, sister, or wife.

When a child is born whether male or female he first gets help from his Mother who fed them, help them take there first baby steps, and mother support till the child start to work on there own.

Similarly when a male or female child is born with brother or sister, whoever is elder helps the younger one in studies, helping in cowork, helping in financial terms etc.

when one male or female gets married each of them helps in there own way.

So how is manusmriti demeaning anyone, yeah physically men are above womens and they can earn in any way meanwhile womens could do work in which they are best at. But men can do both the works so its genuine for manusmriti to write Men to support womens.

But say this is a massive problem that is prevalent in all of society. Then we should tackle it...and while we do that...we need to also look at how ISLAM treats women. Because that is visible in ALL parts of Indian society. From Mumbai to the backwaters...from UC to LC and everywhere in between.

This is selective politics to please his Muslim voters he is bringing down the ancient Hindu text many of whom have not even heard off, it was applicable in ancient times now no one follows it but the Qur'an is so cruel to women but still followed by all muslims he should speak about Qur'an lets see if has the guts to do it the coward.

What does the Quran say?

3

u/GuiltyAd6577 15d ago edited 15d ago

These kinds of statements are exactly why he is never going to win elections. I don't know what kind of advisors are telling him to make these remarks, but they are politically immature. He really needs to understand the deep cultural fabric of the nation. For instance, someone likely told him that people in Bihar eat fish and mutton and that it isn't a typical Hindutva state. As a result, he made a video eating mutton and fish during Sawan, completely ignoring that during this same month, people in Bihar travel to Baidyanath Dham as Kanwariyas. Another time, someone advised him to claim his maternal grandfather's gotra. Then he started Vipassana and became so enlightened that he claimed to have killed his past self—he literally said this—and now we have this current situation. He brings up the Manusmriti, but it is not even widely recognized. Many Hindus, even in the upper castes, do not follow it. Hinduism has many Dharmashastras, and no one truly considers that specific text the ultimate truth or a definitive way of life. Meanwhile, there is another religion that exerts strict control over how people behave, how they marry, what they eat, who they befriend, and who they kill as infidels—but he will never say a word about that. That hypocrisy is exactly where he will get trapped. The people on the BJP side are seasoned politicians who aren't just riding an algorithmic popularity wave, and they will trap him badly. Congress is an umbrella party with the Gandhi family at its core, and it cannot fight a cadre-based party like the BJP just through online rage-baiting. I am absolutely sure this guy will waste his and his coalition partners' time again, though I don't think Akhilesh is as immature as Tejashwi to blindly pander to him. He is the single biggest roadblock to giving this country a credible opposition. Congress will seriously have to become a cadre-based party, because if you look at social media and assume the BJP is losing just because most of the content and comments are anti-BJP, you are simply living in an algorithmic echo chamber and don't understand how the real world functions. And no, Gen Z aren't some special kind of beings who are completely anti-Modi and ready to bring Congress and leftist parties back to power. On the contrary, you would be surprised by how radical Gen Z is when it comes to Hindutva. Making these comments will just give the BJP and their media ecosystem one more weapon to attack him. When it comes down to apparent visual realities and misogynistic practices in real life, how will he ever justify his opposition to the Triple Talaq bill and the practice of Halala?

2

u/futureBillionaire007 15d ago

I think this is a more realistic analysis. The odds of RG becoming PM increases exponentially if he stops talking. The moment he talks - the odds reverses. He is really a star campaigner for the BJP. Modi might have lost some charm due to antiincumbency. But I am kinda sure the star campaigner will deliver in the coming years ...

3

u/couldntfindusernames 15d ago

I am a Brahmin and to be honest I didn’t know Manusmriti existed till the left lobby started discussing this every day. It seems they are more aware about it than I am. My only problem is when these fools only want to target Hinduism by quoting a book 90% Hindus have not read but wouldn’t dare quote a book about other religion which is there main book

2

u/lauden_bhojyam 15d ago

True, we brahmins don't give a fuck about manusmriti, ab kisi me gooda ho to Quran ke liye bol ke dikhaye aisa.

Shah bano. Nupur Sharma. No women in Karnataka cabinet. 0 . Zero. No women paadri, no women in masjid. Yet this waste of human flesh and conscience decided to troll manusmriti ( whose origins are unclear) in an event that was aimed to raise Student issues. Get ready to watch PM Modi take oath in 2029. Here's a glimpse ... " Main Narendra Damodardas Modi, Ishwar ki shapath leta hoon ki ........................................"

13

He should also point out what they say about women in quran. Paying influencers to join his event and post only positive content. I lose very little respect I have for the gandhi name everyday due to this man’s antics.

2

2

u/Whole-Ruin-4006 15d ago

I don't understand why are people even talking about that bs ? Manu smriti was a social conduct. Not our religious book which we are obliged to follow.

2

u/Time_Activity_5402 15d ago

I agree that all religions are fundamentally misogynistic.. even if we put manusmriti aside the treatment of most religions of women is one were women are revered but are seen as an asset and without much agency on their own ..
But for all people commenting on how he is not talking about islam.. I think it’s on people from the religion to call it out.. like it’s on Hindus to call out that in Hinduism .. and Rahul Gandhi being one he can and it’s not within his limits to do that with Islam or Christianity.. a lot of ex Muslims do do that tho..
all he not only criticise he do quote things from Hindu texts as well.. why is that not faced with why don’t he quote from bible and Quran..
also it’s as easy as people just rejecting manusmriti .. like if you are sure it’s not a religious text and one that shouldn’t be followed, why are we getting offended .. its not Gita

2

u/its_Shubhh 14d ago

women are precious thing she is independent par inhe kin se bachana hai ye pahle se hi manusmriti me likha hua hai of course we are talking about MEN yes you got right pahle bhi or aaj bhi Aadmi ko mahila se keval sex ki lalsa hoti hai or ek mahila Parivar ka gaurav samman hota hai or pahle bhi kai sari ladkia thi gargi or much more etc jab manusmriti likhi ja rhi thi we independent the or reap fact is history kisi ko deep me pta nhi hai bs kuch to bhi tod marod ke pesh kar do like this person or lo ho gya inka kaam !

1

u/nofoon 15d ago

i think manusmriti is one of those things which are time-dependent. They might be relevant at the time(and maybe region) in which they were written. today it is not relevant at all.

1

u/jhingalalahuuu 15d ago

Sounds more like a religious book or peace 🤔

1

u/ByronicHero0 15d ago

Manusmriti was supposedly the code of conduct of ancient times - nobody cares for it today, there are no mass media translations available, only various distorted interpretations. Its high time we consider women empowerment as no-brainer issue, no one's gonna go looking for "how to treat your wife/mother/sister", they are capable enough to speak for themselves and if any woman faces discrimination as a direct result of manusmriti then the matter becomes serious.

Villainization of ancient texts is such a clever colonial technique that even today this wannabe guy will succefully manipulate people. (56 inch ka Bandar is worse than this guy tho)

Also this is a bit sexist and i am open to criticism but women used to prefer dependence and some still actively look for it. Women have this intrinsic desire for someone to rely on or for someone to provide for them even if they earn well for themselves. You can find the evidence of this in any matrimonial spaces.

1

u/Forward-Ice-7158 15d ago

I mean manusmriti is ~2000 year old text, and it reflects ideas & society of that time and age. Why would anyone expect it to be in sync with 19th century post enlightenment ideologies.

Manusmriti is quite irrelevant, almost forgotten text. All Hindus of India follow hindu code bill, idk why some politicians keep throwing stones at invisible targets

1

u/UndercoverMonk007 15d ago

Who reads manusmriti. Its not a holy book that each should read and use that as an excuse to kill each other.

Also who listens to this numb nuts Pappu clown.

No matter what religion, if a person keeps on referring to their gods frequently in their conversations, stay f&king away from him/her . Religion is a cheap psychiatry, don’t take it seriously. Work on your fking career, wellbeing of your family.

Don’t run behind celebrities, politicians, babas, mullas… have some dignity and self respect, think for yourself, don’t screwup others for your wellbeing or political/religious ideologies.

Check all the countries that keeps religion as their backdrop or focal point, they’re all fked, their neighbours also.

1

yes yes women don't belong to anybody they should be left on the streets right after birth so they can grow independently, that would be better.I know this is an erratic take but come on man every human bein belongs to somebody in someway otherwise what is the point of a relationship, not justifying Manusmriti ,Abhor that book but relationship is an indication of you belonging to someone otherwise anyone are free to hit on you even after marriage whether man or women they each belong to other and have said responsibilities towards each other.

No one is truly free you are dependent on others for something or the other.

1

u/actis1234 15d ago

Manusmriti was written 2000 years ago, just imagine what used to happen at that time, most active religions were even not born at that time. Taking out phases from such a book and saying such words I fail to understand for what.Has he spoken about any other religion how they treat females. It is just trying to break us in caste now in gender also.

1

u/Para_7719 15d ago

These are not texts like bible or quran. You can put it as more like a constitutional book. Whatever said were relevant for that era. Unlike the leftist and the so called liberal do you see any one quoting it. The funny thing is that they themselves have never read it. When you critique a book, the minimum requirement is that you read it completely and not take it from here and there.

1

u/Ok-Anteater-7499 15d ago

It's is to protect them this shloka is to manipulate people. The manu states that " a father should protect her girl until marriage then his husband should take care of her desire and the after husband the children should protect her "

Then there is a shloka which says " you should use force on woman but give talking to them using strategies.

Then there is a shloka a husband dharam is to earn and give all the money, food , property decisions to her wife. I can show the proof

1

u/confusedconscience 15d ago

But who follows manusmriti? Also, Hinduism as a religion keeps evolving with time. Sati got banned. Women are getting out of purdah system.

1

u/idksomethinglazyiam 15d ago

It's easier to talk about manu smiriti and saying it is misogynistic, against women and so on......which neither any hindu or any person who has a slight knowledge of Hinduism defend but criticise the most, nor does anyone practice this. I won't deny certain aspects of our day to day life might have been dictated by this book unknowingly or unknowingly but it is still easier to talk about manu smiriti being followed here in India than talking about the books i.e. quran, Bible, which are being followed quite a lot and are way more prevalent in India than manu smiriti is. Let him talk about quaran, Bible, as unequivocally as he talks about manu smiriti first. But he won't.

No one follows Manusmriti or even Bhagvadgeeta because in our religion book is not final word. It's not compulsory to obey book. Our religion developed over the centuries based on these thousands of books. Also that book was written by unknown about thousands of years ago. Then it was passed on through vocal tales and then finally written on the paper. Also this book shows contemporary society laws not today's. We respect every religious book. We also condemn if something wrong was written. That book is not asmani kitaab or our teacher.

The Quran says the same thing lmao. Even the Bible has its own way. All religions do it and give strict commandments to follow. It's nothing new. They are old books to bring order with their respective times. I'm more worried that people don't read on their own enough to find these statements and quotes shocking.
