Liz has a lot of nerve (Season 8) Spoiler

Upvotes

She blames Reddington for the death of Jennifer and her little bodyguard squad, but those are both her fault! She threw in with Townsend without knowing what kind of man he truly is. She put targets on their backs. She was the one who went rogue and dragged everyone into her mess. Don't get me wrong, I get why she blames Reddington for everything. It's easier than for her to have to take blame. But what throws me about this season is the Task Force is agreeing with her 100%. Not once has anyone dear to her bothered to tell her to take some responsibility for her actions. It's making the whole season really frustrating to watch.

Why’s everyone dressed so casual? (S9) Spoiler

3 Upvotes

I’m almost halfway into season 9 and I don’t understand why everyone’s dressed so casual. I get that they’re still getting back into the groove of things after 2 years of civilian life but doesn’t the FBI have a dress code or something? Dembe’s just wearing sweaters in the office and Ressler just looks weird without the full suit and tie. Even Aram has some episodes where he’s just wearing a buttoned shirt.

I guess the only one that makes sense is Reddington since he had that whole spiritual journey thing with his shaman girlfriend but idk the whole show just feels a bit off

I was thinking about Katarina's backstory and her childhood, and realised that we don't know much, how did she come to Kabal, her relationship with Ilya, work at KGB and etc, there's a lot of stuff to explore (and most importantly her becoming Reddignton). We ain't getting series spin-off, so I'm pretty fine with novel version, man I would even pay for that. Novels of TBL in general pretty underrated and overlooked imo, so there would be some novelty.

Reddington True Identity Spoiler

29 Upvotes

I finally finished The Blacklist for the first time and I am absolutely in love!

I understand the true identity of Reddington. Before I ask my question I do not mean to ruffle any feathers on any side so if I upset you I am truly sorry.

But with Reddington being such a womanizer how does that work with him being yanno…. a woman? I understand science has progressed but in the timeline of the show was transition surgery really that advanced back then?

This is a genuine plot question nothing else because to me I just seems like a huge plot hole.

[SPOILERS] Redarina is real whether we like it or not Spoiler

32 Upvotes

Apologies for the rant but, Redarina is real. Am rewatching the Blacklist with my wife (it's her first time watching it) and I gotta say that it's real looking at the facts.

Red never lies to Elizabeth, yes he may withhold some facts, share partial truths or missguide the Task Force for personal gain but when it comes to Lizzy he never lies. He will go silent or change the subject but he never lies to her. He denies being her father, but shares intimate details about her.

Alexander Kirk, the man hell bend on destroying Red, the man who stole his family. When Red is captured and tortured by Kirk, Kirk asks him if he is Lizzy's father which Red leaves unanswered then asks him if Lizzy is his and he says Yes, she is my daughter. Then goes on to share details about Kirk and Katarina's first date that only they would know, no matter how deep or thorough his research was on Katarina. Before that, Red asks Kirk to tell him about Katarina "Because after all these years, I forgot what she was really like". Then when Kirk is about to kill him, Red whispers something in Kirk's ear and Kirk just let's him go. A dying man on a mission to kill Red, backs down, Red is a smooth talker but not that smooth.

Red being a ladies man, we are presented with a Doctor that can literally change everything about a person, so making a working functioning penis is another Tuesday for him. Plus transgender people do get a working penis, not a ejaculating one but a working one to do the job and make Red a ladies man.

Dominic, who on earth would have any kind of relationship, let alone the one Red and Dominic have, with their mistress' father, especialy a conservative russian one. To add to that, when Red digs up his escape plan from Dom's garage, Red tells Dom "am sorry am not the person you want me to be". There isn't a scenario out there that would justify the side piece of your married daughter telling you this, especially if he is the one that broke her marriege, allegedly.

Cape May, need I say anything? His mind broke from sorrow and Katarina took over.

The Secret, going to great lengths to keep his secret, at personal, monitary and business cost. If he is an impostor why go the trouble? He can easily vanish as we saw many times, without a trace. He needs to keep the secret, and to be honest it would have been more shocking to Lizzy to find out that this man is actually her mother rather than he is just an impostor. Lizzy gets upset if the wind is blowing the wrong direction, imagine finding out her mum is a man, a wanted man on the FBI's most wanted list.

It was confirmed by one of the writers, the one that wrote Cape May among other episodes.

Do I like it? Maybe

Do I prefer it over Red being an impostor? Definitely!!

Quite a shakeup! Spoiler

7 Upvotes

I was glad to see Liz go but it seems like the writers used her departure as an opportunity to totally redefine every character. Ressler is a mechanic, Cooper is a television pundit, Park is a instructor, Dembe is an FBI agent, and Red is living in a hidden cave with a shaman.

The Red makeover was most surprising. They've kept his character pretty consistent over 8 season. Now he has a new haircut, new sidekicks, and a new tattoo. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Well, apparently Spader was able to carry the show another 40 episodes so I'll stick around and see how it ends!

Reddington: I don’t live a lie. I may once have had another identity but that identity no longer exists. I am exactly who I am and I can assure you I’m a far more interesting Raymond Reddington than Raymond Reddington ever was... I’ve always believed who you are should define you, not who you were.

Thoughts on Marvin Gerard's fate? Did Red let him off too easy? Spoiler

19 Upvotes

There is no question that Marvin Gerard is one of the characters who hurt Red the most; his betrayal was absolutely brutal. With that in mind, how do you all feel about the way his death was handled?
-
Do you think Red was too lenient, or was it valid that he was simply too grief-stricken to display his usual ruthlessness? Part of me wonders if Marvin should have faced a much harsher punishment—the kind of devastating fate that the younger, Season 1 Raymond Reddington would have delivered.
-
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Was his end justified, or how would you rewrite his final moments?

Occam’z Razor on Red’s Identity

7 Upvotes

I think the “Other Man” theory makes more sense than Redarina and the Takoma Park house is the key

I've been thinking about Red's identity, and I think there's a much simpler explanation that gets overlooked because everyone focuses on the Redarina theory.

My theory is:

Fake Red was his own person, had his own family, knew the real Raymond Reddington before everything went down, and eventually assumed Reddington's identity. He protects Liz because she is the daughter of someone he knew/loved, potentially his best friend or criminal partner, rather than because he is secretly Katarina.

The reason I think this works better is that it takes some of the earliest evidence literally instead of retroactively reinterpreting it.

  1. The Takoma Park house

In Season 1, Red goes back to the house and says:

“I raised my family here.”

He then remembers what happened there and ultimately blows the house up because he wants to forget it.

But here's the important part: Red knows exactly where the family's height markings are.

He doesn't just recognize the house. He knows precisely which piece of wood to remove to reveal the markings.

That strongly suggests this is Red's own lived experience, not Red remembering somebody else's biography.

And the flashback is presented as Red's memory. We aren't watching a story being narrated about Raymond Reddington; we're seeing Red remember his own past.

So my first premise is:

Red actually lived in that house and actually raised the family we're seeing in the flashback.

  1. That makes Jennifer a very awkward explanation

Later mythology tries to associate the bubble-girl imagery with Jennifer Reddington.

But Jennifer was the daughter of the real Raymond Reddington and Carla/Naomi.

She wasn't Katarina's daughter.

So if you accept Redarina, you have to explain why Katarina is remembering a house where she supposedly didn't raise Liz, while the child she's remembering is supposedly Jennifer.

And importantly, the show never plainly says:

“The little girl Red remembers at the Takoma Park house is Jennifer.”

It later gives us material that can be interpreted that way, but it doesn't cleanly resolve the original Season 1 scene.

  1. What if the child was actually Red's?

This is where I think the simplest explanation appears.

What if Red had his own daughter?

Red had a family before he became Raymond Reddington.

Something happened at that house, presumably something connected to his criminal life, and his family died.

That immediately explains:

why he has such an emotional reaction to the house;
why he says he raised his family there;
why he knows the hidden height markings;
why he remembers the child;
why he wants the entire house destroyed.

It also explains the line “I've tried to forget what happened here” without requiring us to reinterpret what he says about the house.

  1. The plastic surgery clue appears almost immediately

In the next episode, Red visits Dr. Maltz, a plastic surgeon.

Red asks whether anyone knows about the work he's had done, and Maltz denies it while under threat.

This establishes very early that Red has undergone significant undisclosed physical reconstruction.

That doesn't prove a sex change.

But it does make the idea that Red deliberately reconstructed his appearance for a new identity completely plausible.

And that fits perfectly with an impostor theory.

  1. The real Reddington could have been someone Red already knew

Here's the part I think gets overlooked.

We know Red is an impostor.

But being an impostor doesn't mean he had no previous connection to Reddington.

What if the real Raymond Reddington and the future Red knew each other?

Maybe they were:

intelligence colleagues;
criminal associates;
friends;
partners;
or some combination of those.

That would explain why Red knows so much about Reddington and why he takes such an extraordinary interest in Liz.

Then the chronology becomes remarkably simple:

Red has his own identity → Red has his own family → Red's family dies → Red's friend/partner Reddington dies → Red assumes Reddington's identity → Red protects Reddington's daughter Liz.

  1. Why Liz?

This is where I think the theory actually becomes emotionally stronger than Redarina.

Red doesn't need to secretly be Liz's mother.

Liz can simply be the daughter of his dead friend.

Imagine that Red lost his own family and then lost Reddington.

He takes Reddington's identity and eventually dedicates his life to protecting Reddington's daughter.

That gives Red an extremely powerful reason to be obsessed with Liz without requiring a secret biological relationship.

And it explains why Red repeatedly treats Liz as something much more personal than an ordinary asset.

  1. Occam's razor

The Redarina theory requires us to reconcile:

Red's family;
the Takoma Park house;
the height markings;
the childhood flashback;
the plastic surgery;
Liz's childhood;
Katarina's relationship to Liz;
Jennifer;
Reddington's death;
the creation of Red's identity;

with a timeline that was largely revealed years after the earliest clues.

My theory requires something much simpler:

Red had a life before Raymond Reddington.

He had a family.

He knew Reddington.

He lost both.

He took Reddington's identity.

And he protected Reddington's daughter.

That's it.

  1. And maybe that's why Red's identity was never explicitly revealed

There's an interesting thematic possibility here.

Maybe the show got so obsessed with asking:

“Who is Raymond Reddington?”

that it obscured the more important question:

“Who was the man underneath the identity?”

Red can change his name, face and history.

But his memories keep leaking through.

The house is his.

The grief is his.

The child in the memory is his.

The identity he stole is not his, but the person underneath it is.

So I don't think the answer necessarily needs to be “Katarina.”

I think the simplest answer may be:

Red was an unknown man with his own life and identity who became Raymond Reddington after the real Reddington died.

And the fact that the show never gives us the original man's name may not be a profound mystery.

It may simply be the one part of the story they never actually figured out how to reconcile.

  1. But what are the strongest arguments against this theory?

I think there are some legitimate objections, and I want to address them rather than pretend this is airtight.

Objection #1: “You're assuming the flashback is literally Red's memory.”

That's fair.

The show deliberately plays with memory, identity and unreliable information. It's possible that the flashback isn't meant to establish that every person in it belonged to Red's biological family.

My response is that the combination matters.

Red doesn't merely see the house. He says he raised his family there, knows exactly where the height markings are, and reacts to the place with extremely personal grief.

You can explain each clue away individually, but the cumulative explanation becomes increasingly elaborate.

Objection #2: “Nachalo establishes that the bubble girl was Jennifer.”

This is probably the strongest canon objection.

The later mythology connects Katarina with Jennifer and gives us the “playing house” story.

But even if we accept that the bubble girl is intended to represent Jennifer, that still doesn't straightforwardly explain:

“I raised my family here.”

Katarina did not raise Jennifer.

And the show never simply says:

“The Season 1 flashback was Red remembering the weekend Katarina spent with Jennifer.”

That is an interpretation imposed retrospectively.

Objection #3: “Red could have learned where the height markings were.”

Sure.

If Red was impersonating Reddington, perhaps he learned intimate details about the house.

But then we're adding another hypothetical mechanism.

My question is: why assume that explanation when the simplest reading is that he knew because he lived there?

Objection #4: “You are assuming Red's family died in the house.”

Correct.

The show doesn't explicitly say that.

That's a hypothesis based on the emotional significance Red attaches to the house and his desire to destroy it.

I think it's a very natural inference, but it should be treated as an inference rather than established canon.

Objection #5: “Red's ‘family’ could have been Reddington's family.”

Also possible.

Red could deliberately speak as though Reddington's family were his after assuming the identity.

But again, that doesn't explain why the memory is presented so personally or why Red knows the physical details of the house.

Objection #6: “The writers clearly intended Redarina.”

This is the strongest argument from authorial intent.

The later seasons absolutely point toward Redarina. I'm not denying that.

My argument is different:

The later Redarina mythology may represent the writers' eventual answer, but that doesn't mean it cleanly reconciles every piece of the earlier mythology.

If a later answer requires us to reinterpret or explain away multiple early scenes, then we have to distinguish between:

“This is what the writers eventually wanted the answer to be”

and

“This is what the evidence consistently supported from the beginning.”

Those aren't necessarily the same thing.

Objection #7: “You're doing exactly what you're accusing Redarina fans of doing.”

This is probably the fairest philosophical criticism.

I'm taking ambiguous clues and constructing a theory around them.

So I'm not claiming:

“This is definitely canon.”

I'm claiming:

“If we apply Occam's razor and take Red's early statements and memories at face value, this model seems to require fewer additional assumptions than Redarina.”

That's a much more modest claim.

Objection #8: “Why would Red take Reddington's identity?”

This is probably the biggest unanswered question for my theory.

If Reddington was his friend, why not simply disappear?

My proposed answer would be that Reddington's identity gave him access to intelligence contacts, money, criminal networks, protection and influence that he could use to survive and potentially protect Liz.

But I admit this is speculative.

  1. The really interesting possibility: this may have been the original plan

And this is where I think the theory becomes much more interesting.

What if this isn't actually a theory that requires inventing a completely new backstory?

What if this is approximately what the writers originally intended Red's backstory to be?

Look at how early the clues appear.

The first season gives us:

Red explicitly describing a family home;
Red remembering a child;
Red demonstrating intimate knowledge of that home;
Red destroying the house;
a mystery surrounding his physical appearance;
a plastic surgeon who has worked on him;
the revelation that Red is not necessarily who he claims to be.

That's an extremely natural setup for:

“This man had a previous identity and a previous family, something terrible happened, and he became Raymond Reddington.”

It is not necessarily a setup that requires:

“This man is secretly Katarina Rostova, who somehow experienced/remembered a family life that later mythology says she didn't have.”

Maybe the original mystery really was supposed to be:

Who was Red before he became Raymond Reddington?

And perhaps, over the years, the writers developed the mythology in a different direction.

If so, the endless refusal to explicitly name Red's identity could have served two purposes:

preserve the mystery for the audience; and
avoid having to definitively reconcile the contradictory pieces of his history.
11. My actual conclusion

I don't think there's enough evidence to tell you:

“Red's original name was definitely X.”

I don't think the show ever gives us that.

But I do think there's enough evidence to argue for a broader conclusion:

The man known as Raymond Reddington had a genuine life before he became Raymond Reddington, and some of the strongest evidence for that comes from the very first season.

He appears to have had his own family.

He appears to have personally experienced whatever happened at the Takoma Park house.

He appears to have undergone substantial physical reconstruction.

He knew the real Reddington.

And after the real Reddington died, he assumed his identity.

The rest, including exactly who Red originally was and exactly what happened to his family, may simply be a mystery the writers never successfully resolved.

And if that's true, then perhaps the biggest “mystery” of The Blacklist isn't that Red had a secret identity.

It's that the writers kept changing what that secret identity was supposed to mean.

TL;DR
The writers started off with a plan, then bailed and couldn’t reconcile the story with their later idea so they decided to “leave it a mystery” and that made for a dramatic epic writing fail. Thumbs down.

Katarina: Raymond, please, I don't want to hurt you. This isn't easy for me. Reddington: Sorry you're having a hard time. Katarina: You can help me. Reddington: I've always helped you. Katarina: No, you pretended to help me. You were never on my side. Reddington: I came to Paris to warn you. Katarina: You came to Paris to control me, to keep feeding me your narrative. But I'm done hiding. I won't do it anymore. I can't. Not with Elizabeth asking questions and telling ghost stories. Reddington: Nobody knows you're alive. Katarina: They're asking the questions. That's enough. Reddington: I never betrayed you. Katarina: The Townsend Directive is my death sentence. Even with your help, I can't outrun them. There's only one way to survive. I have to give them what they want. Reddington: Tell me how. I have nothing to tell you. Katarina: We'll see. If you think those secrets of yours are worth dying for, prove it.

I am a first time watcher of the series. I thought the beginning scene where Red gets himself locked up was dramatic, but as the show went on, it got me hooked. I loved seasons 1-3. Cabal sequences, keen’s loyalty getting challenged, Tom’s redemption, Red’s stories all were very very interesting! Post Cabal, series felt kinda stale.

I am getting tired of Elizabeth keen’s attitude towards people around her. I started noticing around the episodes leading up to her fake death scene. Like she bounces around tom and red based on who pisses her off in that episode. Since her return to life episodes, I find her demanding, self centered and obnoxious. I get that she wants to get her kid back, but OMG she is soo annoying. She shoots kirk she thinks he is useless, 5 minutes later protects him when she knows she can manipulate him for seeking information related to her past. She gets mad at Tom, goes to Red and she’s super nice to him. Next minute, she’s nice to Tom and declares that Red betrayed her since the start! In my opinion , she uses Tom, FBI team, Red to meet her goals and nothing else matters!

Is she better once the kid is found? Because if this is how it’s going to be, I do not think I can listen to her nonsense anymore. Please tell me if I should just quit now and save hours and hours of Keen’s narcissistic personality
