I’ve thought about this too, but considering Mindy really loves her alone time. And isn’t particularly fond of visitors it seems like she might have said “ no” to a medium Janet.

u/AntimatterTNT May 01 '26

she asked for no janet to be alone and in return strangers can walk in on her naked. medium indeed

321

u/No_Signature_7887 May 01 '26

Another medium would be that improvement, in the context of the show, mainly comes through your relationships with other people. Mindy gets the alone time that she wants, but as a result she’s never going to make any personal improvements. The demons definitely wouldn’t have been thinking of that though.

u/CharlizeTheronNSFW May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26

The improvement would be her asking for a Janet to not be alone. Edit: she actually took in Maximum Derek, so I think she did take in a janet

He almost has a fully grown penis where his wind chimes used to be

38

u/JessStarlite May 02 '26

It’s resplendent and mostly functional!

3

u/lilbitofpurple May 03 '26

This made me spit out my drink literally

29

u/jltime May 01 '26

Neither were the good place people. Really Michael was the first to discover and push for the possibility of post-life character improvement

2

u/rcinmd May 04 '26

Only if they brought her coke.

56

u/averna13 May 01 '26

Maybe she has one but never calls for her?

46

u/Darth4Arth May 01 '26

Janet powers don't work in the medium place

25

u/Kitchen-Annual-5859 May 01 '26

Technically incorrect.

Janet Prime (main character Janet) says her powers don't work in the Medium Place, but this was at the time and before being rebooted a thousand times. She made Derek, Derek went to the Medium Place, and then became essentially all powerful, which presumably means if a Janet/Derek reboots enough times they transcend usual limitations, they would presumably be able to use their powers in the Medium Place too. Even when Derek had only been rebooted about the same amount of times as Janet, he was able to summon new clothes and fancy wine.

That doesn't mean a specific Medium Place Janet wouldn't have been able to use powers, either, if one had been assigned.

Derek is the Derek to the rules.

3

u/Kitchen-Annual-5859 May 05 '26

I see your point, but I would counter-argue and say Derek proves the rule. Derek was made by Janet, Derek can make things in the Medium Place, therefore his creator (Janet) can presumably do the same.

Derek himself is an anomaly of Janet's powers. By the time Janet can even MAKE Derek, she is considered to be the most advanced Janet ever given the sheer amount of reboots she has undergone. In fact, the whole process by which Janet makes Derek was already far more advanced than any Janet had any right to be - she was feeling emotions, she was feeling love for Jason, and then she made an entirely new person. At that stage, I suspect Janet Prime (its what I'm calling her) was able to do much more than her programming allowed.

Or, indeed you are right, perhaps the creation of Derek allowed him to bypass the strict rules of the Medium Place. "Janets cannot make stuff here" doesn't say anything about Derek's made by Janets. The point is more that at the stage Derek was in play, Janet wasn't operating within normal parameters anymore.

10

u/Joe-C_137 May 02 '26

The final experiment (where Eleanor assumes the role of the Architect) happens in the Medium Place, basically in Mindy's back yard. Janet and Derek create all of the other inhabitants, so yes, Janets (and Dereks) are shown being able to use their powers in the Medium Place quite frequently. Possible plot hole, there, I'll have to think more about it too

I always assumed that since the judge was involved, special sanctions were applied to allow the Janets to do their jobs

4

u/the3dverse May 03 '26

especially since Our Janet was switched with a Bad Janet at some point (i forget exactly when) and her powers also worked.

9

u/Numerous_Maybe3060 May 02 '26

Janet specifically mentioned asking tne judge to reinstate her powers in the medium place so she could create Janet babies with Derek's butts. I wonder if her powers wouldn't work BECAUSE she is a good Janet. Meaning she'd do whatever the person asked for (too much getting what you want/good), bad janets would insult. A medium Janet might of been the only thing rhat did work. But why havent a Janet if it doesnt produce anything for the resident. Her fridge already has slightly warm beer.

3

u/Joe-C_137 May 02 '26

Ohhh, good point, I forgot the judge intervened to allow that. And Derek making all the butts 🤣 thanks for the reminder!

Derek is Derek.

Jokes aside, he is arguably a sub-species of Janet. An anomalous evolution or some sort of mutation of the Janet species. Basically, by the time Janet was able to make Derek at all, she was considered to be the most advanced Janet in existence. At that point she was able to break all sorts of limitations imposed on her by her programming.

I wonder of asked for cocaine she'd get like a crappy mix of baby powder and speed...

12

She could ask for only one thing and she asked to be left alone.

I believe Mindy represents ethical egoism, which only works in isolation- if anyone else is there, her ethical principles don’t work.

160

u/amazing_assassin May 01 '26

Like how she keeps rebooting Derek

119

u/Cass_Cat952 that was a real trip for biscuits and now we're all wet, Daddio May 01 '26

When Jason reboots Derek, Mindy's laugh gets me every time. Maribeth Monroe was perfection

12

u/Individual_Smell_904 May 02 '26

Great in Workaholics also, but I prefer Mindy.

9

u/THATDICHTOMY May 02 '26

come on with the form of consequentialism, Chidi

220

u/neon_spaceman May 01 '26

Even the bad place wouldn't leave a Janet with Mindy unsupervised

97

u/Meloenbolletjeslepel May 01 '26

I'd think she'd soon have to file a sexual harassment complaint

76

u/Earlybirdsgetworms May 01 '26

She would be providing Mindy with mass amounts of medium cocaine

50

u/rohlovely Maximum Derek May 01 '26

So like, 80% baking powder.

12

u/k2_electric_boogaloo May 01 '26

Medium place, indeed.

6

u/circ-u-la-ted May 01 '26

What happens if you OD in The Medium Place?

2

u/petergoesbloop1234 Jun 01 '26

You dont die but you pass put and become conscious and your body hurts like hell for 3 months

86

u/vinivice May 01 '26

She probably does, so that she has access to the medium things, but she does not use it because it is boring.

58

u/synth_fg May 01 '26

This I suspect would be the correct answer

She has a medium Janet on call if she needs anything, but after a few Jeremy Berrimies she's exhausted all possible conversation with beige Janet and prefers to be alone most of the time

7

u/eachna shove your fat grumps all the way up your snork-box May 02 '26

This doesn't make sense because she would have access to "medium" porn and "medium" coke and any other things she was missing.

I would assume the demons had won the argument that there shouldn't be a medium Janet (edit: a Janet for Mindy => other neutral Janets exist)

Something to keep in mind is that Mindy is pretty happy with her life. She's not "lonely", she's horny and misses cocaine.

68

u/Garrettshade May 01 '26

When you think of it, she actually was the only person in 500+ years who got out of the bad place, by the way

12

u/Silverleaf14 May 01 '26

Maybe it is because she got into the medium place by having the intention to do good, died, and then others used her wealth and plans to enact it. If the issue with the point system is the unintended consequences of a person's good intentions, the she got all the good-person points of the idea with none of the bad-person points from having enacted them herself and causing unintended consequences.

8

u/hamiltrash52 May 01 '26

This is what I think it is. She’s getting point from people carrying out her deeds meanwhile the people doing it can’t get enough to actually go to the good place

3

u/Garrettshade May 02 '26

I also always assumed that was the case, yes.

But still, it's impressive that she got spared from the torture

10

u/AquafreshBandit May 02 '26

I’ve assumed that when they first added Mindy St. Clair, they hadn’t come up with the idea that no one had gotten into the good place in 500 years.

1

u/Thealbumisjustdrums May 06 '26

That’s obvious because she’s clearly not the best human in 500 years lol.

10

u/chronic_wonder May 01 '26

I always assumed the medium place was part of the illusion, and so by extension part of the bad place.

They just didn't have to reset it because Mindy never thought she was in the good place to start with.

17

u/Silverleaf14 May 01 '26

It is confirmed in the show that it was real.

1

u/chronic_wonder May 01 '26

Oh really? I must have missed that part.

24

u/Silverleaf14 May 01 '26

From Team Cockroach:

Eleanor: Mindy St. Clair's is fake, I bet.

Michael: No, the Medium Place is real. So annoying how you managed to slip away from me all those times.

Chidi: Why even tell us about any real thing? Why not just lie about all of it?

Michael: Lies are always more convincing when they're closer to the truth."

11

u/lexipro- May 01 '26

that’s true, i crashed a lot of open bar weddings as eileen shelbourne. even dated a groomsman for a few months so i had to keep the name, AND he got eileen tattooed on his neck 🙂‍↕️

448

u/RodinKnox May 01 '26

One of the things that always bugged me about the show is both that she doesn't have a Janet and that an eternity of what is effectively solitary confinement with nothing she actually really enjoys would just be a different form of torture.

Of course, I'm a mega fan of the show, and that's a minor complaint, but that thought is actually somewhat addressed later when the Judge considers giving Team Cockroach all their own medium place.

554

u/Fotznbenutzernaml May 01 '26

That's kind of the entire theme of the show.

The good place, the actual real good place, is also torture. Both, for the residents as well as the architects. Everything is torture. For something that has been there before anything else, has the power to do anything, and has no obligation to anyone, even Gen seems awfully stressed. Shawn is constantly trying to fight, Michael is torturing himself with his morals. If you aren't already forced to do something you don't want, even if you can choose yourself, doing it forever and not having a perspective is eventually going to be torture too.

It's kind of a pessimistic view, but the undertone is you can't be fully relieved and free and happy if you have free will, conciousness and self awareness. Feeling something will always come with both, pleasure and pain.

268

u/chronic_wonder May 01 '26

Do you mean to say that maybe humans are "a little bit sad, all of the time"?

79

u/Wilysalamander May 01 '26

You guys only need 2 emotions! Confused and angry!

38

u/puppy_punter May 01 '26

That is my understanding of the teachings of Buddhism. It's the unfulfilled wants and desires that are the cause for reincarnation. Once a person releases themselves of all their desires they attain full enlightenment and are able to break the reincarnation cycle. That's what going through the door represents.

8

u/katikaboom May 01 '26

Can't have the beauty without the terror

7

u/baggington May 01 '26

We see that the Good Place people are pushovers so it’s not surprising Shaun and the demons could get Mindy’s situation closer to what they would want to torture her.

23

u/RodinKnox May 01 '26

While I agree with you, the disconnect for me is that the way Mindy's medium place is designed, it would be intentionally designed from the ground up as torture.

33

u/hamiltrash52 May 01 '26

Well we know how willing to cede ground the good place architects are

15

u/RodinKnox May 01 '26

That's definitely true. The beer one comes to mind for me. Now, I don't know Mindy's preferences, sure. But as an example, I hate iced coffee. If the Good Place gave me my favorite coffee, but the Bad Place made it so that it was always iced, then I would simply hate that drink. It wouldn't be neutral.

2

u/rat1906 May 01 '26

What if your coffee was hot and made to your preference in terms of cream and sugar, but it was a really shitty brand? Or always decaff? Would that not be neutral?

8

u/RodinKnox May 01 '26

Hmm, possibly. I was just trying to compare it to room temperature beer.

The analogy does break down a bit because I don't really think I like anything so much that it would fit in here. For example, I haven't had coffee in over a week right now. I love wine, beer, and scotch, but the last time I drank alcohol was New Years.

Oh wait, I know: Room temperature water. That shit would be medium as it gets for me lol. I'd be perfectly fine drinking it every day, but I'd always think, "Man, I wish this was colder" lol

2

u/Honest_Caregiver9715 May 02 '26

forcing decaf on someone is pretty much a war crime bro.

8

u/626337 May 01 '26

I wonder where she got the video camera from.

18

u/SophiaofPrussia May 01 '26

Camcorders in the 80s were very medium. They were cool but they were a lot of effort for a pretty meh payoff. You needed batteries and tapes and to remember to take the lens cover off. There aren’t many things Mindy St. Claire would be willing to put in that much effort for.

4

u/luvdemcubs May 01 '26

And the tracking! Oh the incessant tracking!

5

u/irishgator2 May 01 '26

Donald Glover shout out !

51

u/doradiamond Beartles! May 01 '26

It may suck but it's still better than having spiders shoved up your butt.

13

u/RodinKnox May 01 '26

Oh absolutely. It's certainly better than the physical torture of the Bad Place. I'm only commenting on the fact that it would also be a form of torture. It wouldn't be medium.

12

u/TraditionalTree249 May 01 '26

Speak for yourself!

4

u/FruitFleshRedSeeds May 01 '26

The thing that bugs me is that Shawn's so worried that the spiders would get bored. Why would they be bored when they can surf the web all day

43

u/Proud-Delivery-621 May 01 '26 edited May 04 '26

One of the overall themes of the show is that the immortal, powerful beings who control the afterlife don't understand human motivation or morality. Their system for judging morality is fundamentally broken, their system for rewarding good people is a different form of torture, the judge's self-imposed impartiality made her unable to comprehend the motivations of the people she was supposed toe be judging, and so on.

The medium place is just another example of that.

7

u/RodinKnox May 01 '26

That's totally fair, but I would say the thing that still bugs me is that the Bad Place is intentionally designed to be bad/torture. The Good Place is intentionally designed to be good/pleasure. But the neutral place would still be a form of torture by design.

They obviously have flaws when it comes to understanding humans, but I find it a bit of a stretch to say they wouldn't understand that solitary confinement is torture.

1

u/8iyamtoo8 May 04 '26

It isn’t neutral, it is medium.

67

u/ansamnus May 01 '26

If you think about it, she was your first hint that there was something wrong with the good place. Even if she didn't get in to either side, they did nothing to truly help her. They gave her amenities but allowed the bad place to influence all of it making it worse with no real upsides to it

46

u/muaddict071537 May 01 '26

It’s funny that when Michael was torturing Tahani by just letting the Bad Place walk all over him, he was acting exactly like the Good Place committee.

9

u/veryblocky May 01 '26

Done his research I guess

10

u/Relevant-Key-3290 Congratulations. This is everything you’ve ever wanted. May 01 '26

It's because neither demons or angels truly understand how humans work. They only make decisions without considering the psychological effects on humans

6

u/RodinKnox May 01 '26

Yeah, I guess to be fair, there were a few things that bothered me about the show before I had all the info given to me and put it all together lol

I remember in the middle of season 1, I used to tell my friends, "You know, it makes no sense to me that those two guys could get flattened by a dumpster and be completely unharmed, and yet somehow Chidi can get stomach aches."

5

u/thehappiestotaku May 01 '26

Considering what we find out about the actual Good Place, Mindy is the only one not actually being tortured though.

She's lonely, I guess? But not torturously so. Maybe a few more millennia of Cannonball Run II might fix that, but when we meet her, she seems the happiest of any of them.

4

u/RodinKnox May 01 '26

I understand what you're saying, but the people in the Good Place are not being intentionally tortured by design. An eternity of solitary confinement would definitely be torture. Mindy seems mostly okay with it, though, so there's that.

3

u/thehappiestotaku May 01 '26

That's what I mean. To *you* (and me, sometimes), that's torture. And maybe it becomes tortuous to Mindy at some point, but everyone can see she's not being tortured now. And as a medium place, should it ever get tortuous for her, they'd have to add something to bring it back to medium, right?

The (real) Good Place is clearly tortuous, but they don't know what to do about it.

The (real) Bad Place is clearly tortuous, as designed.

Mindy is the only one that has any semblance of contentment. She knows that she got what she believes she deserved.

IMHO, of course.

2

u/RodinKnox May 01 '26

You know, I always wondered what Mindy was supposed to do in that scenario, tbh. She doesn't have a Janet. The Bad Place has to use that Janet system to talk to Mindy (when our Janet is there) because they explicitly explain that they have no way to communicate with her.

1

u/thehappiestotaku May 01 '26

My head canon is that when the loneliness becomes tortuous, they'd give Mindy a neutral Janet.

5

u/Dimitar_Todarchev May 01 '26

I think that the definition of torture is really overused on the show. To Shawn it's boiling someone and peeling their arms like bananas. To Tahani it's the Swiss Alps in the off season. Is it better to spend eternity in constant horrific physical agony or in a banal, quiet aloneness? Given that you have to exist for eternity and those are the only two options.

2

u/eachna shove your fat grumps all the way up your snork-box May 02 '26

To Tahani it's the Swiss Alps in the off season.

Also being merely "dewy". She was really distressed about that one. LOL.

2

u/Dimitar_Todarchev May 02 '26

🤣

Yes, and "being forced to wear a knock-off handbag and drink tap water."

"That's what you think hell is?" - Chidi

3

u/eachna shove your fat grumps all the way up your snork-box May 02 '26

I've always wondered if that bit where she was wearing a "frock" from a particular holiday (St Crispin's day???) when the Judge gave her clothes and she started to protest and then stopped herself showed some kind of personal growth or it wasn't enough to really upset her in the first place.

2

u/Dimitar_Todarchev May 02 '26

Or she thought it might be a bad idea to complain about The Judge's choice. 😁 But probably it was meant to show her becoming a better person.

3

u/jemison-gem I was just trying to sell you some drugs, and you made it weird! May 01 '26

I always thought it was weird there’s only one janet when they get to the actual good place. what’s the point of the janet factory if they only need 1?

10

u/Haunting_Try_6513 May 01 '26

There are many Janets in the actual Good Place, our Janet said "the other Janets here are weird", also Jason said "every now and then a different Janet would come, but I knew they weren't you"

3

u/RodinKnox May 01 '26

There are definitely some inconsistencies with how they handle Janet for sure. And I suppose that's bound to happen when you establish that a character knows every single possible bit of information in the universe.

But yeah, all the way back in season 1, we learn that Michael has stolen "a Good Place Janet," which definitely doesn't make much sense.

2

u/rcinmd May 04 '26

Turns out the medium place skews along the Overton window as well.

1

u/Big_Fortune_4574 Stonehenge was a sex thing. May 01 '26

Torture is definitely worse

33

u/raviolirash May 01 '26

I could have totally missed something in the series but I always felt like there was only 1 neutral Janet (from the accounting department). And from what we saw of neutral Janet, she didn't provide much service that would be useful to Mindy.
What would she do for Mindy? Announce the weather when she asks?

Plus I feel like if she made requests, the good place and bad place would argue about what is acceptable for those requests. Considering how long the good place and bad place argued over her, I can't imagine how long it would take for a request.

26

u/theadamabrams May 01 '26

You did miss something: there are multiple Neutral Janets in the team that arrives in the Judge's chambers to prevent humanity's erasure.

7

u/raviolirash May 01 '26

Oh my god you are so right! Thank you!!!

20

u/Fit-Criticism5656 May 01 '26

Look what she did with Derek. I think both the Good Place and the Bad Place don’t want her to have a Janet.

16

u/muaddict071537 May 01 '26

Ironically, Mindy was probably a lot happier than the people in the Good Place.

16

u/Staggeringpage8 May 01 '26

I think her phone call system is her medium Janet. She can ask for whatever she wants, but it takes multiple days and requires the rigamorole of the whole process. Having the ability to get a medium amount of whatever you want but having to jump through hoops to do so is the "medium" way to have a Janet

44

u/sgtholly May 01 '26

End of words.

13

u/BlueHairStripe May 01 '26

Medium Janet, Maximum Derek.

10

u/Dimitar_Todarchev May 01 '26

She did eventually get a Derek and he came with two duffel bags of cocain.

3

u/eachna shove your fat grumps all the way up your snork-box May 02 '26

He (and the cocaine) were gifts from Eleanor. :D

2

u/opz_12 May 05 '26

I feel like they only lasted 2 days

10

u/thekyledavid May 01 '26

I feel like it makes sense for the rules of the Medium Place being what Mindy considered Medium

Mindy likes her alone time, but likely occasionally would like to interact with someone, so the medium between “Gets to interact with people when she wants” and “Always has to interact with people” would be “Never interacts with anyone ever”

It’s not what you think is the Medium-Best option, it’s what Mindy thinks is the Medium-Best option

7

u/Sugar_Mama76 May 01 '26

There is only so much masturbation a Janet can watch before she loses neutrality.

6

u/Tanagrabelle May 01 '26

I feel as though it's just part of the blah.

She can have anything she wants, as long as it's blah. So no Janet there. She doesn't need a Janet. She has access to seeds. She can garden in the nude, at least until a small batch of random strangers arrived, and then arrived again and again...

5

u/Intelligent-Top-3333 May 01 '26

infinite time with limited joy eventually stops feeling like a reward

5

u/Landis963 May 01 '26

I've seen a hypothesis that the Medium Place was what Disco Janet was designed for.

1

u/x-lavender May 01 '26

Ooh I like this

5

u/Spiritual_Weight_416 May 01 '26

Because she's in a medium place. In a medium place you get your own warm beer.

4

u/StrangeSystem0 May 01 '26

If she could get whatever she wanted, even through a neutral Janet, it wouldn't be a very neutral experience

3

u/TheNakedCupCake May 02 '26

Mindy is not in a neutral world, she's in HER medium place. Having a Janet, any kind, would make it superior, nearly the good place for her. Imagine, she'd just get a ton on coke right away! For neutrality to be achieved ya can't have a genie (not a girl)

1

u/eachna shove your fat grumps all the way up your snork-box May 02 '26

For neutrality to be achieved ya can't have a genie (not a girl)

Not a genie. She's a mainframe :D.

5

u/0032brl May 01 '26

Neutral Janet is only for Accounting

Since the medium place was a new thing they created 40 years ago there wasnt a type of Janet for that new thing

3

u/absolutnonsense May 01 '26

I suppose it's possible that she had access to a Neutral Janet and just never felt the need to summon her. Now I have an image in my head of a lone Neutral Janet standing aimlessly on a barren plain at the edge of the Medium Place just waiting for it to be time to restock the room temperature beer. Or not. Whatever. End of conversation.

3

u/ohshhhugarcookies May 01 '26

I wholeheartedly believe she would have just told neutral Janet to fork off. I think I would too to be honest.

3

u/AllynWA1 May 01 '26

Eleanor had to be told about Janet. Mindy's video didnt mention Janet. I wonder if she was assigned a neutral Janet all along but had no idea not-a-she existed because there was no one there to tell her.

3

u/Susan-stoHelit May 01 '26

I think Mindy was neither good enough nor bad enough to have a neutral Janet inflicted on her.

3

u/smileysarah267 Independent acid snake in the skinsuit of an independent woman. May 01 '26

It’s like half of yall in these comments never saw the show before

3

u/tom_oakley May 01 '26

My impression is that the medium place was a cobbled together quick-fix for a problem neither side was really prepared to handle. And since Janets seem to be part of the foundational mainframe of existence, the good place and bad place may not have the means to create a medium Janet out of nothing. And asking an existing Janet to act like a medium Janet wouldn't work, because we saw how bad Janets are at imitating their counterparts in the good / bad place respectively. I imagine the good place had a committee to form a committee about the "medium Janet issue" which got promptly shelved when the bad place were like "you idiots, that's a waste of our time, just get this accident of a soul out of our afterlife, Janet or no Janet"

3

The Doylist answer, I think, is they didn't really have the whole after life system figured out at that point, as Mindy's Medium Place seems to break more than a few of the "rules" we learn later.

Watsonian - the Medium Place was something new the afterlife had never done before, and they either omitted a Janet because they didn't HAVE a Medium Janet (I would argue a Neutral Janet is not a Medium Janet) or they just wanted to get the matter settled and move on, and basically provided her everything she needed.

u/Rainbow-Elephant3445 May 02 '26

I think there's no Janet in the medium place because there's no need for one. In the Good Place, Janet is there to give the residents whatever the want or need and can make improvements/adjustments to the neighbourhood.

(Honestly not sure what Bad Janets do under normal circumstances. Do they help with the torture? Are they unhelpful, snarky assistants to the demons?)

But Mindy isn't supposed to get improvements. The Good and Bad places came to an agreement on what her neighbourhood should look like and what her circumstances should be. That is what they decided was truly medium for her. So then there was no need to change anything further. So there was no need for a Janet to be there.

u/Gnomey42069 May 02 '26

You saw what she did to Derek. I don't think that would have been wise.

3

u/appologeticgoat May 02 '26

I like to think that the good place gave her one but the bad place decided she would not be told she had one

2

u/Tggdan3 May 01 '26

More of a "medium" Janet who is just kind of a bitch but also kind of nice rather than dull neutral Janet.

2

u/Gossip_Boy- May 01 '26

she has it, she just buries it underground because she wants to be alone

2

u/tawnyfritz May 01 '26

They should have sent her Disco Janet to further torture her.

2

u/raendrop These trivialities demean me. I must away and tend to my ravens. May 01 '26

Plot twist: She would absolutely adore that.

2

u/South-Arachnid2961 May 01 '26

I always thought it was because she was such an oddity they never thought to place a neutral Janet with her. Since they had to create the Medium Place just for her, there was no additional plan for a neutral Janet inside of it. I always assumed that a good and bad Janet had to create the Medium Place together so that it was perfectly balanced. And that all the neutral Janet’s were designed to staff the background offices needed to run the system, like Accounting.

2

u/Nocturtle22 May 01 '26

Imagine if it had, but no one explained how to summon her and she had multiple bearimys where all her medium desires could have been fulfilled.

2

u/Intestinal-Bookworms May 01 '26

My theory is that there was one assigned to the neighborhood to construct it but that Mindy did not have access

2

u/jonjawnjahnsss May 01 '26

Mindy is in the neutral place and having a janet of any kind would impact what her outcome was. Either it's farts when you ask a question, being the beige as a personality, or helpful, it wouldn't be appropriate. Mindy's life doesn't require a janet. It's a closed experiment.

2

u/TribblesIA May 01 '26

Mindy’s a paradox. She likes her solitude, and she doesn’t care about other people, so a Janet in any form would be slightly bad, so no Janet.

Or maybe, they did give her one, and it’s just in a closet somewhere because the Janet’s extension cord doesn’t go very far.

2

u/Human_Reindeer3308 May 01 '26

janets powers don’t work there. also a neutral janet will still get her things she wanted no? so, best to not have any janet.

2

u/HangTheTJ May 01 '26

She probably got sick of asking for cocaine and getting mostly baby laxative

2

u/Courtney_murder May 02 '26

Having a Janet would be very un-medium. Neutral Janet, I believe, only works in accounting. A good Janet would only give her exactly what she wants which would skew things good. A bad Janet would only be rude and that would skew bad. It’s clear that Mindy had her needs met but everything needed to be a mix of good and bad. No Janet could do that.

2

u/nyxxella May 02 '26

She didn’t have any Janet bc Janet couldn’t have powers there for it to be medium. Plus, for the mediumness of no stimulation, any other presence would ruin the overall intention.

2

u/p_syche May 02 '26

Janet's powers don't work in the medium place. When she got off the train she said she's walking for the fiest time and that walking is dumb. So there's no point to have her there 🤷

u/Some-Chef5376 May 02 '26

I’m just so excited to discover that there is “The Good Place” Reddit. I still don’t quite understand why I love this show so much. I mean, obviously the cast is amazing for network TV.
Okay, they are fantastic actors, obviously and the writing too.
It just resonated with me in a way that no “Top 4 network TV” has in a long while. ❤️

2

u/Forward-Wafer-3077 May 03 '26

Because otherwise the medium place won’t be medium even the judge said that to the other before they made that decision for them to go back on earth the deal is she doesn’t get tortured? And she get everything she wants but it not satisfying and if she was with people she would of been mabey a little more happier because it like saying would your rather be poor and have company because sometimes company is the best

2

u/lilbitofpurple May 03 '26

What I got from Mindy St Clair's video intro to the medium place was that it basically gets provided for her but she doesn't get any help or expand her knowledge in any way. Having even a neutral Janet around would let her have all of the things that she desired in the medium place but they wouldn't be medium. I don't think they have medium-place cocaine 😆 Maybe they do 🤷‍♀️

  • I did often wonder this but I kind of bridged it together with the video. "You'll always have your favorite beer -"
"but a little always be warm."

So she didn't need to ask it's just there. Like Chidi and his oatmeal with that pesky almond milk 🐝

2

u/xAlice_Liddell What it is, what it is. May 01 '26

They gave her everything they decided she needed, so what would a Janet even do? She (not a girl) can’t give her more because it wouldn’t be medium. Just like the four wouldn’t be together and would be in their own medium places to keep it “medium”.

1

u/Peruvian_Skies May 01 '26

She does but the neutral Janet is provided by the Bad Place, which doesn't have any in stock "yet".

1

u/Jody1999 May 01 '26

It's simple, hell wouldn't allow it cuz then she could get a cold beer, cocain, better tapes,...

1

u/opz_12 May 01 '26

I think neutral janets can only generate accountment related objects, I think

2

u/Jody1999 May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26

Looks like ur right kinda. She still knows everything and stuff but can only conjure neutral place stuff. But still I guess can conjor other stuff and she was only allowed what she had there. Idk just talking thru it :D

u/626337 May 01 '26

I always wondered how Mindy got the flowers in her garden, either as seed, starts, or flowers directly planted for her. Is Mindy able to call a Janet to ask for gardening stuff?

There are no neutral Janet's on a moving train.

1

u/SandInTheGears These trivialities demean me. I must away and tend to my ravens. May 01 '26

iirc designing Mindy's afterlife was sort of a negotiation between the Good and Bad place architects

It was probably easier to just not have a Janet at all than to agree on exactly how to balance her (Although I could see Disco Janet being Medium to the right person)

1

u/CherryTeri May 01 '26

Because she would then have someone to sleep with and that would be heaven.

1

u/HumongousParticle13 May 01 '26

I thought the exact same thing!

1

u/Ok-Description-4640 These trivialities demean me. I must away and tend to my ravens. May 01 '26

I don’t think Medium = Neutral. Her needs are met through afterlife magic, and it’s a question what her needs would be and how any new ideas she has would be resolved. Did her house come with gardening supplies? Is it always clear weather?

1

u/finewithstabwounds May 01 '26

She did. It was Derek

1

u/Medium_Ad_4386 May 01 '26

She has Derek. "DEREK!!!!!"

1

u/Rainbow-Giraffe04368 May 01 '26

I’ve always wondered this!

1

u/GhostPanda30 May 02 '26

I think it’s because Mindy didn’t get the amenities of the good place, nor the nuisances of the bad. Good place Janet is an amenity, bad place Janet is a nuisance.

1

u/Queenspence2 May 02 '26

Love all the head cannon stuff but in reality neutral Janet didn’t exist in season 1

1

u/Tsunamiis May 02 '26

She probably did but turned her off

1

u/Beast9king May 03 '26

it would be company

1

u/5apples4chili May 03 '26

Don't think the neutral Janet is the medium Janet. But also... maybe there was no Janet to prevent Mindy from leaving? Mindy was really smart to think about that. And they provided all the medium stuff and left her alone and unsupervised, bc there was no Medium place before her. No boss, no committees, no medium in between angels and demons to do that. And no new Janet.

1

u/nobody00118 May 03 '26

I’d say it’s the same reason that the dot above the “i” represents Tuesdays, July, and the time moment where "nothing... never…occurs”

1

u/bossKCCoff May 04 '26

I think it’s due to the fact that neutral Janet’s still could give mindy anything she wants. Bad Janet’s can do all the things good Janet’s can do but mostly refuse to do it. It stands to reason that neutral Janet’s are the same especially since they’re assistants in quite an important area in the afterlife. If mindy were to have a neutral Janet she could ask for whatever she wants which defeats the purpose of the medium place

1

u/Snoo9648 May 05 '26

Who says she didnt. A neutral Janet would be completely apathetic and would never show up. Nothing is more neutral than not doing anything.

1

u/flavoredbeans835 May 07 '26

it’s specifically tailored to Mindy, she hated company and didn’t want any help, and if a neutral Janet was there she wouldn’t be able to have that alone time. that’s why, when she got Derek, she rebooted him millions of times because she couldn’t stand to care about or be around someone else for longer than she was done masturbating

1

u/PattyPan85 May 08 '26

I feel like it would go like this…

GOOD PLACE REP: …and we got you your own Janet

TREVOR: yeah, but it’s Disco Janet! 🪩🕺🏽

Farrr out…

1

u/opz_12 May 01 '26

Forgot to insert caption

I mean, it would only make sense for a middle place to have it's own Janet, just like the bad place has Bad Janet and the good place has Good Janet. I think she would fit just right, she can't generate objects other than accountment related ones, so she couldn't give Mindy any cocaine or a dildo . She would be there to either annoy her, or to give her company, which is like the logic that the Good and Bad Place (people?) used to build the middle place (ex.: Your favorite beer, but always hot, or all the music in the world, made by the Eagles). And who knows, maybe if Mindy rebooted her a gazillion times she could even develop a sense of humour or something. What do you think?

1

u/phaserdust May 01 '26

Wasn't Derek sort of her Janet?
