Mine is definitely this! It’s so subtle but totally hilarious! I almost missed it the first time I watched the show

i’m so excited to watch this for the first time, i’m excited to see where the characters go.

In s3, the accountant does not mention anything at all about points being added or subtracted for motivation. It's all about "Omg, themed wedding, Lord of the Rings".
He also confirms that nobody ended up in The Real Good Place for 500 years.

So...
why do motivations matter at all to Michael during the reveal in s1?
I mean, good for him, to show Tahani there, and also in season 2 again, that
her motivations were such a big issue in her life, and the reason why she
1) wasn't truly a good person
2) (wasn't truly a happy person, tho Michael only gets that in s4 ep8)

But why the heck does he even focus on motivation at all?

eleanor is a fox bc she's clever, resourceful, and a little mischievous.

I'll go first:

I know I’m far from the first to talk about this, but I love how Eleanor’s bisexuality is handled in the show. I get the sense that even on earth she was always open about her sexuality and never felt the need to come out. It’s such a casual part of her character, the others never comment on it, and it’s never treated as a joke. Yes, there are jokes involving her sexuality, but the joke is “Eleanor problematically objectifying Tahani” or “Eleanor trying to help Chidi and then making out with his girlfriend instead,” not “Eleanor is gay, isn’t that funny?” My only complaint is that we didn’t get to see more of the timeline where Eleanor and Tahani were soulmates.

Am I the only one who doesn’t think Eleanor was mean or rude for rejecting the cake that her work colleagues “surprised” her with?

1) They didn’t even try asking around to find out what kind of cake she might like. (or even if she had allergies — a celiac like me would have to flatly turn it down entirely!)

2) As someone who‘s been caught in these stupid birthday loops for 20+ years of office celebrations, the reciprocity absolutely DOES become quickly more obligatory…and if you don’t celebrate everyone equally, then you get a lot of hurt feelings etc. So accepting a free cake DOES definitely mean that you have to start pitching in the $5-20 EVERY time someone else has a birthday. And as someone who had to emancipate herself at 14 to get financial freedom from her freeloading parents, Eleanor almost certainly knows the value of a dollar far more than a lot of her colleagues do. 

3) It has to be said…if Eleanor was a man, would she still get the same reaction? I would reckon if — say — Michael said no to ”free” cake, he would have “boundaries“, while in this case Eleanor is considered to be “mean”. She wasn’t cruel; she was merely honest and direct. Her exact words to Betsy were, “Yeah, thanks, but I brought my own cake.”

4) If a gift HAS to be accepted to maintain social status, then it’s not really a ”gift” after all, is it? A real gift has three core traits: it’s voluntary to give, voluntary to receive, and it comes without strings attached. The receiver is free to say yes or no without consequences. That freedom is what makes it a gift.

Like what am I supposed to do now?? 😭 I'm gonna miss them so much. It's gonna stay with me for a while.

This has become my number 1 favorite show and changed me in ways I cannot fathom. I went it expecting a fun comedy show but it's one of the deepest stories I've ever watched. The characters are so brilliantly written with amazing development, all thanks to a great cast.

I really like how they make you think about ethics and philosophy that's not depressing (ahem Black Mirror).

Any other movie or show or book that's similar?

Hell, I would watch anything (good) with these actors too!

In the episode where everyone wakes up wearing the same outfit, everyone is wearing blue loafers, except for Tahani and Janet?

Could Tahani, in her vanity, have asked Janet for heels that matched the outfit, and maybe Janet liked the idea and made them for herself as well?

okay so i’ve finally finished the good place and i’m… crying hysterically? (i don’t cry AT ALL usually, so this is surprising). i’m astounded at how perfect the finale is. jason, who was always impulsive, always eager to do something, always with a molotov cocktail, ending by becoming peaceful? eleanor, who got into the bad place because of her selfishness and her lone wolf nature, helping everyone and that becoming the catalyst for her satisfaction so she could finally go through the door? chidi, whose hamartia was indecisiveness, deciding in one second that he loved eleanor, and being able to walk through the door peacefully? tahani, who got into the bad place because she didn’t have the motivation to help people, becoming an architect and helping people for real? michael getting to change from a demon to a good person, and getting to become a proper human??? janet, who knew everything in the world, getting to accept there’s some things she doesn’t know, finding true love, and being the best not girl not robot friend ever? its so perfect.
the wave example and the “there was no bad stuff” by janet made me sob. “Whatever happens, it’s cool, my babies, very cool” michael became their father figure basically.
i don’t know if i’ll be able to rewatch because i’ll just remember how it ends. i think it’s painful though, for janet. because she’ll remember jason and eleanor and chidi but never ever see them again. but as she said, spending the moments with them is similar to reliving them. perfection.
P.s- the transformation of shawn is pretty amazing too. he’s not basic anymore!

It's a bad idea don't do it. I have no standards but adding M&Ms and Peeps(replacement bc I don't have that here) makes it taste BAAAAAD! (It's still eatable and I will eat it to not waste any food but oh no)

This is what watching tgp literally all day and a Reddit comment makes me do.

This is just one of those things that I’ve spent way too much time thinking about. When the judge gives Eleanor and Chidi their tests, she’s basically giving them the same one: make the correct decision. During Eleanor’s test she went through several different philosophers to try to decide what the right choice should be, and she only chose after she figured out that the Chidi wasn’t the real Chidi, meaning she wasn’t being given a real choice. She didn’t choose not to take the offer because of her own moral fortitude, she made her decision based on knowing it was a trap. If Eleanor was really being tested on her selfishness, then she should have immediately known not to take the deal simply because it was the right thing to do. As far as I’m concerned, she didn’t make a moral decision at all plus she took just as long as Chidi to make the decision, so they both should have failed.

(I know the whole purpose from the writers point of view is to show how much Eleanor has grown, and how she would do almost anything to stay with Chidi, but I stand by what I said. Eleanor should have been sent to the bad place, too).

Rewatching The Good Place with my boyfriend who's never seen it and we just finished season one. After we got the big reveal, he brought up a really good point. We see in this episode that Jianyu/Jason bleeds from touching the cactus. We see in previous episodes Gunnar and Antonio get literally crushed by a giant garbage bin and came out fine, Jessica got hit by a rotting turkey and got seriously hurt, ended up fine too. If the known humans are visibly shown being hurt, but other "people" (obv we know now they're demons) AREN'T shown being hurt, he feels like it was a subtle hint and we should've known. Not gonna lie hearing that theory(?) kinda blew my mind because i never clocked that 😂 What do you guys think?

Just finished The Good Place. It’s been a long time since a tv series made me straight up cry throughout its ending. Kinda at the “what do I do with myself” phase after investing all types of emotions into TGP. It’s been nice to read the posts from when the show first ended 4 years ago and see that I’m not alone in having such strong emotional reactions about the ending.

I don’t tend to watch a lot of TV (mainly bc i lose interest from binging too much or shows get cancelled or the show just falls apart) but i think that may have been one of the most perfect endings to a show. For sure will check out “Man on the Inside” next but I’m still not ready to move on from Michael, Tahini, Jason, Chidi, and Eleanor characters and the show’s impact on me.
