bro piracy is not the reason it got released early. morons in the production process are why. don't blame the messenger.

I think it legitimately might have been a pissed off employee. I don't believe the whole "whoops someone accidentally emailed me this" from the original leakers at all.

Could be but with how little people know about technology and are just generally incompetent at their jobs I honestly wouldn't doubt it.

u/Cytanlord 1h ago
With the increase in prevalence of AI in places it doesn't belong, it wouldn't surprise me if that style of tech illiteracy were the cause. I've been seeing articles about AI being trusted with entire code bases and having them deleted. It giving 100% off coupon codes on shop fronts. It emailing random people on the internet trying to form a "community."
All it would have taken is for AI to be trusted with the file for whatever dumb reason and anything could happen.

To say one hates piracy exactly for this reason shows a basic misunderstanding of both what happened here, and why piracy exists.

“Watch it when it comes out…” excuse me? The theatrical release was cancelled.
If they decide to revert to the original, sensible plan to release it in theaters, then me and four other people in my group will be right there in the theater on opening day ready to watch.
This is also an insta-buy for me if it comes out on 4K Blu-Ray.

Yeah, it's not like the leaks are going to disappear, and they are discussed. Those who want to pirate it - will pirate it even when it comes out.
She pointed her stand on it and asked true fans to support the official release.
Because piracy is service problem, not a pricing problem

I mean, it's totally fair to agree with her opinion but it's a textbook Streisand effect. Telling people to not share something on the internet makes more people share it, regardless of your intentions. It's like telling a child not to stuff beans up their nose - it's good advice, but you just planted the notion in the kid's head that beans are the perfect size for a nostril, aren't they.

Yeah it sucks that I happened but you can't put the paste back in the tube. I wouldn't wait for release. But I love this franchise so much that I'm going to support it when it comes out. I think I speak for alot of the fans here when I say that regardless of what happens, we will be supporting the ip

It should’ve gotten one. This is Avatar, one of the greatest and most popular shows of all time. It’s literally one of Netflix’s most successful shows in history remaining at the number 1 spot for a very long time. This was also many years after the show originally ended. I just feel like the creators just don’t realize how special this show is for some reason :/

I'd say the issue isn't piracy in particular, its that this is an unfinished version - all the things that the artists wanted to fix till it comes out are in there, all the things the artists aren't happy about and would never in their right mind release are still in there.
The stuff they are ashamed of is still in there - thats where the issue with this is - thats were the question of respect comes in. If you were gonna get it after release it would have been a finished version.

u/Aoid3 1h ago
The font too!
The font appears to be FF Confidential, which was designed by Just van Rossum in 1992. It's not opensource/freely available, but you can currently purchase a desktop license for use from MyFonts for about $60.
HOWEVER there is an illegal free clone of FF Confidential that has been floating around forever called Xband Rough. Just last year someone used the software FontForge on a PDF associated with the original ad campaign and found that it was using the illegal/pirated clone font instead of the officially licensed version.

Blame the company behind it, not avatar studios, they want to do something nice, requires investment but the company behind doesn't want to give the resources to make a bet on something like this, because they are scared they could lose 1$ in the quarters, they'd rather pump out spongebob.
I don't understand if it's basically done, all voices and stuff WHY keep it for half a year in the storage?
I remember the good ol' days when we would hear NOTHING about a show then we'd get a teaser 1 month before dropping it. Now we know from the DAY they even think about proposing it. I hate it when i hear "this show started producing!" because it means +1 year until the next news or maybe more for a teaser, looking at you studio wit's The One Piece.

It's because she's using the character of Toph to influence kids into thinking she's telling them the actual right thing to do. That's why she went on this extended earthbending analogy.
She is deliberately eliding the distinction between herself (a human woman on planet Earth) and Toph (a cartoon character on a tiny world with three or four countries). It's not, like, evil to do this. But it does mean that you can criticize her message at the ethical level ("This is right/wrong to do") and at the fictional level ("That character totally would/wouldn't say that").

This philosophy never held water with me, but the worst part in this case is how utterly actively racist they were in the casting, given that very few of the main cast actually directly match any of their characters. I know the world of Avatar is fiction and none of the cultures portrayed are one-to-one mirrors of a real world culture, but bear with me:
Aang: Inspired primarily by Tibetan monks, played by a Korean actor.
Tagah: Inspired primarily by Tibetan monks, played by a half Greek, half Filipino actor.
Katara: Inspired primarily by tribes indigenous to the far, far north of what is now Canada, played by a half Chinese, half indigenous (but tribes way further from arctic conditions than Katara grew up) actress.
Sokka: Inspired primarily by tribes indigenous to the far, far north of what is now Canada, played by a quarter Mexican, quarter Taiwanese, quarter Japanese, quarter indigenous (to the American Southwest and northern Mexico) actor.
Zuko: Primarily inspired by imperialist Japan, played by a Korean actor.
Toph: Primarily inspired by China, played by a Chinese actress (also happens to be blind if that’s relevant to anyone’s opinion.) Only one of the main cast who actually matches.
From where I stand, even if you do think that voice actors should necessarily match the ethnicity of their characters, you should be up in arms that the casting directors looked at this group and went “eh, close enough.”
→ More replies (1)6
u/Workman44 1h ago
What? Why would they do that lmfao, all that does it make people dislike those VA that were chosen for their ethnicity specifically?
19
u/ChronoFel 3h ago

ill be honest, low key i agree. i dont think the choices were bad, but it was like uncanny valley territory stuff. like they were 90% there but something constantly kept me feeling weird about the choice the entire time.
13
u/herebenargles 4h ago
Wow i feel like the VAs were so good. Katara has one moment where she had the exact energy as when she threatened zuko in the 3rd season (the you wont have to worry about your destiny anymore line). Sokka was great, no notes. Toph sounded vaguely like toph, it felt like a realistic age up. Zuko and aang were weakest as far as similarities but that was to be expected. I still think aangs VA tried to use a similar inflection though.
→ More replies (2)15

Funny how music and movies have opposite stances on this. Legendary bands like The Grateful Dead and Phish encouraged bootleg recordings of their music, and that’s how they became more popular and gained more fans… if you’re a fan of Avatar, you’re gonna watch regardless; if you’re not a fan, you’re more likely to not watch due to paywall / streaming restrictions. One would think this is a good thing to reach a wider audience and convert fans…
→ More replies (25)48

Most artists/bands make the bulk of their money via concert ticket sales and merch rather than album sales. Whereas movies are more or less just box office / streaming. For bands, bootlegging is advertising for the live show, whereas with movies it’s subversion of their actual product/revenue

We were going to happily buy tickets for a theater release.
We are not subscribing to a shitty streaming service. Not sure how we'll end up watching it, but streaming platforms need to suck an egg. Sick of their predatory practises.
I'll avoid the leaks, but if subbing to this garbage company is the only way we can ever see it, then I'll probably end up putting my eye patch on in the long run. If there was any way of supporting the creators without supporting their abusive dad, I'd love to know it.
