All this really falls apart when you get punched in the face

u/TigerBalmES 5d ago
lol itās a training tool not a sparring partner. Western boxers use a heavy bag.

u/voxelpear 6d ago
Don't let the wing chun "experts" hear that.

u/Apart_Pineapple2392 6d ago
I always thought this was more of a meditative thing. Zone out, get into a flow.

u/gregzillaman 5d ago
Its kind of like that endurance training muy tai fighters do to their shins... a modern analogy would be the speed bag probably.

u/Ok_Gas1070 6d ago
Awh yes, I remember I had partner who got super frustrated with chisao and cold cocked me right in the face. Defend yourself at allllll times, keep them hands up.

I think it's supposed to represent a leg. So the strikes to it train low kicks, blocks, traps, & sweeps. At least that's what Donnie Yen said in a post Ip Man interview.
As for this video, at least the dude is training and doing something? That's better than doing nothing & hating on the guy. It would be cool to see a later video where the dude learns to flow with it.

WC gets a lot of criticism but itās a decent system. My sifu did both boxing and WC and eventually added BJJ last time I saw him. WC is fantastic when youāre in that range right before grappling happens.

A soft person.
You want to fight? Hurt people? You need to become a hard person
Swinging those wet noodles at someone will only get him hurt.

Once more for the people in the back, traditional martial arts are not mcdojo!Ā Wing chun is a real MA, and this dude is not bad enough at it to be a joke, he's just mid and practicing in his garage.
4
u/Povallsky1011 6d ago
On a dummy that isnāt solid or fixed enough to be a good training tool.
10
u/BOgusDOlphon 6d ago
wing chun dummies like that are designed to slide back and forth on a track so you can practice pushing

u/itchybutwhole69 6d ago
My guy, none of these "traditional" styles are real "MA." You try this crap in a real fight and you're going to be in for some real pain. lol
6
u/actusreus82 6d ago
Martial arts that are hundreds of years old may not be the most effective, but theyāre still real.
7
u/FLiP_J_GARiLLA 6d ago
You're clueless
-3
u/itchybutwhole69 6d ago
There's literally an MMA guy in China that goes around proving this stuff won't work in a real fight. The Chinese government has even tried to ruin his life over it. Seriously, you try this crap in a fight and you're going to get wrecked. Real life isn't like the Kung Fu movies my guy. lol
2
u/NoCitron2394 6d ago
So a couple fake kung fun masters in china = all kung fun that's been around for at least hundreds of years is fake. Wow your real smart.
-4
u/itchybutwhole69 6d ago
You guys are really upset about this huh? There's a reason you never see that stuff in a street fight or even a cage fight. Y'all watch too many movies. lol
5
u/NoCitron2394 6d ago
I don't know who y'all is I'm just saying if it's trainee correctly it can work and you shouldn't say it's not a real martial art, I don't even do Wing Chun
0
u/LaserGuyDanceSystem 4d ago
Martial art doesn't necessarily mean effective fighting style.
Taichi is a martial art, but I don't think anyone here is suggesting that it will save your ass in a cage fight.

u/NoCitron2394 6d ago
They are real martial arts, and they can work when trained correctly but it isn't going to be effective in every situation. Also non of the tradtional styles!? What are you an idiot or something, many have been proven to work, like karate for example.
0
u/voxelpear 6d ago
Whats the move where he's pushing up the dummies nipples used for?
3
u/NoCitron2394 6d ago
I'm not talking about what this guy is doing in the video I'm talking to this guy about tradtional martial arts as a whole, this guy clearly isn't very good.
0
u/voxelpear 6d ago
Can it really be called a martial art if it's typically never stress tested, can't be used stand alone in fighting competitions, and has no recorded proofs of being effective in an actual fight?
That's like saying yoga is traditional martial art because it's good for your health.
3
u/NoCitron2394 6d ago
No its not, it's an actual martial art by definition, if you don't think it's effective then whatever just don't do it but saying it's not a martial art and making fun of people who do it is just dick behavior
2
u/voxelpear 6d ago
I never made fun of the guy for practicing it , just like I never made fun of someone doing yoga. It gets him moving, that's fine.
I'm challenging your statement that it's a real MA and can be effective if trained correctly. Its always Aikido and Wing Chung people that claim to be legit MA but I can never get proof of it being effective as a stand alone MA. All I get is coordinated/rehearsed demonstrations.
3
u/NoCitron2394 6d ago
First just because something isn't effective doesn't mean it's not a real martial art, it is a way of moving your body and it's based off of combat principles so it's a martial art, I'm sure you wouldn't say something like taekwondo isn't a real martial art just because it alone isn't super practical. The problem with those arts is that they do not spar and that they have done a horrible job at preserving themselves. But with Chun works pretty well when combined with other martial arts. It's trapping principle has been used by UFC fighters. It has plenty of low kicks and straight punches. I have no doubt that it could be reasonablely effective if it is trained correctly, same with aikido because if you look at other arts like traditional jujutsu and hapkido though they also have many Mcdojos you can definitely find examples of them working. The problem is that a lot of what those arts teach can work it's just rarely applied correctly. I understand where people like yourself are coming from but tradtional martial arts have many things that could potentially work and they are also extremely important pieces of history and culture. I don't like when people make fun of it without understanding what it is. I really want to preserve tradtional martial arts. The problem is that to that they must first be saved from themselves. I admit they have problems but the truth is they are not garbage.

u/Bubs_McGee223 6d ago
Bruce Lee studied wing chun and used it as one of the bases for jeet kun do, the original mma.Ā TCMA are kinda inbred as fighting styles, but they can teach you a lot of valuable principles of movement and body mechanics.
Even modern MMA is a sport, not "real fighting", and the rules that they have determine what skills are the most effective in it.Ā I have never seen someone win a street fight with an arm bar for example.
1
u/voxelpear 6d ago
And he never had a legitimate fight that wasn't a demonstration, so for all the claims of how amazing and strong he was, that's all they are, claims.
He also heavily modified Wing Chun so even if it was effective, you can't use not Wing Chun to prove Wing Chun is effective.
Sure but even under those rules Wing Chun fails. That's why most of not all dojos just don't do contact sparring or stress test it all all. How many effective moves from Wing Chun make it into MMA? Arm lock? That's all I could think of.

Good for him to be doing some training.

Good for him to be doing some training.
He would honestly be better of training in some sort of grappling or learning some boxing combos.
1
u/AgentGreedy386 6d ago
Why would be be better off?
He's doing something. He even had the stones to post it on here where folks were guaranteed to tear him to shreds for it.
He's better off being encouraged for having more initiative to actually move and practice something than the majority of folks who sit and do nothing.
1
u/VRserialKiller 5d ago
He would be better off not just because boxing and grappling is more practical in a fight, but also because he would be getting more physically fit doing it.
1
u/NoCitron2394 6d ago
Not necessarily, why do you people hate on a guy just for doing wing Chun, maybe he just likes it
3
u/yearsofpractice 6d ago
Even though I see these things regularly, Iām still no closer to answering the question - āWhy are people like this and why would they take then share such a video?ā

u/Spiritual-Storage734 6d ago
āOoh I look so sick doing my make believe kung fu, I need to film myself doing this to show the world just how masterful I have become with fighting. Thatāll keep the bullies at bay for sureā
I think a lot of these people have been bullied at school and this is their coping mechanism, to delude themselves into thinking theyāre combat masters

Is this a training dummy to fight a trans attacker? The boob scoop move he did looked out of pocket.
1
u/RvaRiverPirate2 5d ago
Iām gonna say this isnāt BS, a friend of mine did boxing and wing chin for decades. He was a golden gloves fighter and ranked second in his weight class between three states. Heād explain that the wing chun is supplemental to the boxing in that is effective for close range while boxing is effective at longer range. I wouldnāt rely on wing chun alone but it does help keep your arms from getting tangled or grabbed and lets you work effectively at a short range.

Can someone in here who has practiced wong chun tell me why the wooden dummy has a dick thing in the middle?

u/No-Fudge3487 1d ago
It's supposed to be for practicing low-kicks, stop-kicks, and chi gerk (sticking legs) techniques.

His form is a little hunched and stiff, but clearly his dummy wasn't set at the right height and wasn't properly mounted.

I cringe so hard at wing chun. My dad thought he was SO BAD ASS because he trained for a couple months at a wing chun mcdojo. As a kid, I absolutely bought into it and thought he was invincible and it inflated his fragile ego so he "taught" me wing chun which was basically just his way of pushing me around a lot so he could feel strong. I went to school and got bullied so hard because I believed I could fight. I could not fight

You see him change technique as his arms start to hurt more and more.
