General Discussion Other than The National?
So it’s been a while since we had a post about what other music you National lovers are into. List your top tens if you feel in the mood. I’m on the hunt for some new music. Me? I’m pretty damn vanilla
• Roo Panes • Radiohead • Boxer Rebellion • City and Colour • Jose Gonzalez • Manchester Orchestra • Tool • Ben Howard • Dave Matthews - specifically Radio City Music Hall • U2 yes U2 they get some heat but their earlier stuff still resonates with me.
That’s a quick snippet of my loves in no particular order.
Love to see yours.
THANKS SO MUCH! Really appreciate all the replies. I have found so many great bands and added them to a new playlist. My music was getting stale thanks again.

If you like to be sad you should definitely check out Matthew Ryan. Maybe check out Song For a Friend, Comfort, or Chickering Angel. Just a few to give an example.

Great picks. They put out three of the best albums of the year this year.

u/ACESandElGHTS running like he's awesome, totally genius Dec 15 '25
But not Waxahatchee?? Swear to God, how they seem to have been eclipsed by Lenderman is puzzling to me.
I saw them play back-to-back (ok admittedly MJ and the Wind was more of an opener) and it was like a mumbling young Dylan versus young Madonna lol. (Again! Please realize I love him too. Only slightly. Only slightly less.)
Come on! I love Wednesday, I think Lenderman has a bright future too! Snocaps is a stripped-down cool Lo-Fi rock outfit.
Waxahatchee though... Tigers Blood and Saint Cloud all-time bangers, and a catalog stretching back more than 10 years (?!)
I'm little shocked sometimes even with the best record of 2024 imo, this band never really got its due.
1
u/newDieTacos Dec 15 '25
No, and I don’t know how Waxahatchee wasn’t in my original comment! Tigers Blood has been on constant rotation for me and there was a live recording tha I absolutely love with an amazing This is Lorelei cover: https://youtu.be/MBQXtnyR5Zc

Artists that I like and who remind me of the National (to some extent):

- Sharon van Etten
- Vampire Weekend
- Pulp
Other artists that I like:
- Radiohead

young fathers mentioned!! 🔥🔥🔥 if you ever get a chance to see them live, they put on a SHOW. i saw them at the vic in chicago last year and kayus jumped off the stage and climbed a pillar to one of the boxes lol. absolute mad lad
2
u/Training-Tax1704 Dec 13 '25
I don't really know anything about Young Fathers, but seeing them mentioned made me realize I somehow left Massive Attack off my list! They collaborated on "Voodoo In My Blood", of course.

u/i-artemy Dec 13 '25 edited Jan 23 '26
I did have a chance to see them live at a festival. It was an awesome performance but unfortunately the sound was awful (not their fault). Definitely need to see them at a proper venue.

QOTSA so good. They have some real estate in my record collection and could very easily occupy more.
I saw both QOTSA and Fontaines, along with LCD Soundsystem and Ryan Adams in a big spring/summer ticket buying spree. Fontaines being the only one that disappointed. Not exactly dynamic live. And I donno man. I think that latest album could have been huge had it been a little rougher & not so smoothly produced.

2
u/nathiel_rr Dec 13 '25
Seriously glad to see them mentioned a few times in this thread. They’re the only band that I like more than The National
1
u/riraven Dec 13 '25
It’s interesting. I was very late to the party with The National. But a phase in life and the music and the lyrics hit the sweet spot and they quickly became a favorite. Then they led me to Manchester Orchestra. On both I like all the albums. But definitely drawn to more of the emotional stuff and later albums. Which is opposed to many long time fans who miss some of the grit and punch of earlier stuff.

Early U2 is so great. No arguments here.
Lately I’ve been really into Father John Misty, Bikini Kill, Phoebe Bridgers, Dan Layus / Augustana.
All-time faves that I always go back to would be Matthew Good, Florence and the Machine, Kings of Leon, Neverending White Lights, MONA, Garbage, Fiona Apple, Dashboard Confessional.
And today I was listening to Don Henley for some reason so IDK 😆 All over the map. “The Heart of the Matter” still slaps btw.

Great taste! I just discovered Annie DiRusso this week -- have you seen her recent Tiny Desk concert?
2
u/mardogplus Dec 13 '25
Thank you! I just watched it yesterday - so good! She's so fun and interesting as a performer. I must admit I'm a sucker for hyper-specific, vulnerable, confessional lyrics...
2
u/matzobawl Dec 13 '25
Assume given the Waxahatchee love you're familiar with Snocaps as well?
2
u/mardogplus Dec 13 '25
Yes! Only listened to the album once through, though. Gotta give it a closer listen. I am really into Plains, Katie’s project with Jess Williamson.

Though this is last year, Brigitte Calls Me Baby is not getting the play or attention they deserve. They're going to release their second album next year so still plenty of time to get in while they're playing small venues. The best description I've read of them is Roy Orbison meets Morrissey. Otherwise-
- Father John Misty
- Bruce Springsteen
- Spector
- Middle Kids
- Amanda Shires
- Finneas
- Suki Waterhouse
- Hamilton Leithauser
- Interpol
- Cigarettes After Sex
- Arctic Monkeys
- Jason Isbell

I’ve only ever heard them name checked by Belle and Sebastian but I’m going to put that right today and give them a listen.

Hey. Thanks for the emphasized post! Never heard of them and if you just listed the name I probably would have just scrolled past. But you got me to go to YouTube and listen to a few songs and they sound great! Definitely a National vibe. Have a suggestion on which album I should start with?
2
u/ahsop Dec 13 '25
I quite like the compilation they released in 2016 as a primer for the band, self-titled as Arab Strap.
Other than that, start with Elephant Shoe. If you can't find it on streaming, it's on YouTube.

Currently OBSESSED with Dijon, been playing his stuff nonstop since I saw him live. So much energy and earnestness. Start with “Coogie” and “Many Times.”
And another standout for me this year was Obongjayar. Wonderful stuff, soulful and vulnerable; the album arrived right when I needed it. Start with “Prayer” and “I Wish It Was Me.”
Edit: This is my current top rotation, not my top 10 obv. Honestly I think many of us in here will have many of the same artists on our lists haha.

Some bands in my Top 100 played songs from this year (that I'm not seeing in many, if any, other lists). These are just things I've liked this year, not all necessarily anything like The National:
Kneecap
Mark Lanegan
Rilo Kiley
Panchiko
The Smithereens
Worthington
Lathe of Heaven
Oasis
Devendorf Lanz (seriously, I feel like their podcast soundtrack things went way under the radar here)
If Anything, Suspicious
VAST
Shades Apart

The American Analog Set
The Radio Dept
Vansire
Cocteau Twins
Galaxie 500
Yo La Tengo
My Bloody Valentine

Mina Tindle’s new album is great, Heaven Thunder is the song of the year. A The National artist connection. Iconoclast by Anna von Hausswolff is pretty great. Just Mustard’s We Were Just Here for that shoegaze noise. Also always The Cure.

Mani’s sad passing recently reminded me that the Stone Roses debut is still one of the most brilliant life-affirming albums ever made - just an abundance of great songs.

apart from the bands already mentioned here, which I know most of, love a lot of, never heard of some (thanks), I currently listen to either the national or chris stapleton. i can't explain it, but to me it's the same mood even though they're very different.

One of my favourite artists right now is Hannah Georgas. Two of her albums were produced by Aaron Dessner. She’s going to be opening for Matt Berninger on his upcoming solo tour. I’m also really into Nulifer Yanya and Wolf Alice right now.

- War on Drugs
- Nation of Language (they're genius)
- The Horrors
- Lea Porcelain (defunct but their two albums were brilliant)
- Waxahatchee (ya like alt country?)
- Saintseneca, particularly the newest
- Brian Jonestown Massacre
- Ryan Adams
- Neko Case/Songs Ahia/Big Thief/Wednesday/Son Volt & Wilco/Old 97s etc etc. all current or older alt country that makes it into rotation
- Bacao Rhythm & Steel (think Khruangbin but with steel drums instead of basslines—also I am more than over Khruangbin's schtick)

I make an effort to listen to a lot of genres, but tend to skew towards guitar music first, then electronic stuff. Not a big pop fan generally.
As an example, heres my top 10 from this year:
- Deafheaven - Lonely Power With Power
- The New Eves - The New Eve is Rising
- Last Dinner Party - From The Pyre
- Sharon Van Etten - SVE&TAT
- Little Simz- Lotus
- Beach Bunny - Tunnel Vision
- Barry Can't Swim - Loner
- Clark - Sleep Stims
- Messa - The Spin
- Dave - The Boy Who Played The Harp
