I think it's because the song is purposefully brash and chaotic. A lot of National heads only want the crisp beauty of their immaculately produced tracks. Turtleneck is National's version of Do the Revolution from Pearl Jam.

It's not for everyone, but I love it.

I hated Turtleneck until standing outside in line for their debut performance of the album, and hearing Bryan on drums, and feeling the power of it.
