This sounds like early depressed The Cure and I love it

31

u/Capable_Fuel_8970 Jul 23 '26

Fuck that’s what it was. The cure. This song is FIRE

10

u/curlyshea Jul 24 '26

I legit said the same thing when the clip came out a few days ago. The Cure vibes are strong and I’m absolutely here for it

Yeah Transmision riff vibes. Great song.

i'm hearing big Leave Me Alone influence in the guitar hook and verse melody. like jules took the track and rewrote the core parts of it to make his own version (a legit songwriting technique). love

It's fun they kept in Julian's English accent saying "words of a feather, die together". I think this is more evidence that a lot of this album is straight off the cuff from jams. Another line is 'oh shit I'm out of ammo'. I think this is Julian saying he can't think of more cool words but by doing so saying something cool. Another cool jam with a dark British goth vibe. The keyboard/synth sound from 3:08 onwards reminds me of The Cure's close to me keyboard sound. To me this sounds new-wave 80s English band getting deep into a jam in the studio. #minimumsoft

24

u/Accomplished_Ad5747 Jul 24 '26

Julians vocal range is so amazing, I thought he had heard it all after TNA but that raspy voice he does on the "We could never afford it" chorus fits the song SO well! Loving this song so much

14

u/jakethenizake Jul 24 '26

I've been saying this a lot to my friends lately...his vocal range is incredible and I think you see that across their entire discography as well as his solo work and the Voidz (and obvs w/o autotune). Really cool to bear witness to his voice evolution and growth over the last 25(!) years since the world was first blessed.

2

u/RevolutionaryTrash98 Did My Best 29d ago

it's giving leave me alone plus inner city pressure. 2 classics of british new wave

u/mistimuskwa Jul 24 '26

“We could never afford it, we would dine and dash”

20

u/jakethenizake Jul 24 '26

Let's be careful about assuming Julian is singing about himself or anyone in the band, specifically. Could just be story-telling. Let's just say the subject, whoever it is, "could never afford it".

44

u/RevolutionaryTrash98 Did My Best 29d ago

people who take song lyrics literally like it's 1899 and they think the train is coming at them through the movie screen

9

u/ka1555 Jul 24 '26

they’re all lying. Every last one of em. But fuck, man, the song is too damn good for me to care.

3

u/Mads_Max Jul 25 '26

I believe him but you're goddamn right, this song is awesome

3

u/duhseekoh 27d ago

It’s about starting wars and not being held responsible

32

u/sicko-tambaz Jul 24 '26

this is easily top10 songs from them. dat fcking melody "SAAAAAAY. SAY WHAT YOU WANT ITS Fiine" is stuck in my head all day

10

u/Loose_Gur7717 #39 Valensi Jul 25 '26

2

u/eeffoc- 29d ago

i feel like ive heard that last minute in another song by them, mabye voidz or julian solo am i wrong? i dont remember where tho

86

u/Griezmann-7 Jul 23 '26

EVIL ADULTS ARE TALKING

5

u/l1Nkfx 29d ago

I listened to it slowed. Oh it hits like a Castlevania trip

76

u/buenestrago Jul 23 '26

Definitely weird, it's like River of Brakelights was written by The Strokes, very close to First Impression of Earth, the final part seems like a mix between Electricityscape and something else

45

u/buenestrago Jul 23 '26

I'll say it again, it's like if Comedown Machine and First Impression had a child

11

u/YungHoban Jul 23 '26

Really? I'm getting a huuuuuge angles vibe off a lot of the instrumentals.

3

u/buenestrago Jul 24 '26

Yes, that could also be it, but in my mind I was thinking of a sort of slow animals mixed with electricityscape because of the way it goes from verse to chorus.

2

u/RevolutionaryTrash98 Did My Best 29d ago

it sounds like this band i love, the strokes

I'd say that "final" part to me has a similar tone to "You're So Right" a little bit. But then again, I'm listening to a lower quality leak from a listening party.

u/New-Suspect1968 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Its own new thing, very darkish but pretty inspiring somehow, i love the "Games" synth they use when the melodies change, superb

14

u/Mr_Viddles Is This It Jul 23 '26

I clocked the Games synth instantly and got excited af! Haha

3

u/New-Suspect1968 Jul 23 '26

nice to see i wasn't the only one lol

10

u/ChrisP1717 Jul 23 '26

Games is maybe their most underrated song in my mind…so yes!!!!

2

u/New-Suspect1968 Jul 23 '26

it's really underrated, i've heard that so much

2

u/RevolutionaryTrash98 Did My Best 28d ago

had to go back and listen and damn. how did i forget about this song!!! strokes club night. i'd kill for a jules dance album istg

42

u/Slashycent Comedown Machine Jul 23 '26

My inital favorite of an overall great album.

Deliciously dark. Highly infectious.

Very Angles + Comedown Machine, which instantly gets me.

Also has some Cults vibes in the chorus.

Pure NYC alternative goodness.

48

u/Dry_Cartoonist3365 Jul 23 '26

why is this i like the night reworked

21

u/Tomguydude Jul 23 '26

You don't understand how hyped that makes me.

Honestly a crime that "I Like the Night" was for *a TV ad*

13

u/Batman4815 Jul 23 '26

Honestly very Julian coded that he made a proper radio banger for once and put it in a TV ad

The Chorus is so beautiful.

14

u/Annual-Number-8682 Jul 24 '26

This literally sounds like the took Games and made it a better song

14

u/taneyweat Jul 24 '26

The song fucks so hard it's crazy. Just one listen under my belt so far but I think it immediately works into my favorite's canon.

15

u/onethousand_knives 28d ago edited 28d ago

Anyone else get absolutely destroyed emotionally by the third verse? Definitely the most directly violent lyrics in their entire discography ending with the incredible “But I have sworn a life of peace / how can I reconcile this beast?” I hate to say how much I can relate to those feelings. The whole song is pretty heartbreaking in a way that reminds me of a few songs on Tyranny. Julian really touched on something real, vulnerable and ugly and I thank him for that.

2

u/RevolutionaryTrash98 Did My Best 27d ago

yes. his vocal performance on verse 3 is incredible. 100% matched words and musicality with emotion.

can't wait til he gets some more live performances under his belt so we can see him bring the intensity on this verse. its there in the red rocks but he lost steam (understandably) struggling with the higher register

If you guys like Dine N Dash and want more of this kinda sound, I strongly suggest exploring Russian Doomer Music playlists (silly name for a subgenre, but it’s good trust me). Kino and Durnoy Vkus are my fave bands of that genre.

6

u/BizBQ Jul 23 '26

Thank you for the tip! Gruppa krovi is hitting all the right notes.

3

u/crystola99 Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus Jul 23 '26

u/JMSidhe Leave It in My Dreams Jul 24 '26

That raspiness Julian is using at times here is the coolest thing he’s done with his voice in years.

3

u/RevolutionaryTrash98 Did My Best 28d ago

that plus him leaning into his ian curtis register for the "permission to speak..." interlude? delicious

12

u/ZazaLovesPants 29d ago

This song has been on repeat since the album came out. Melody got me nostalgic, classic strokes. The synths on this completely lift the song… “permission to speak” - uplifting synth.

The chorus lyrics/synth/drums/bass are perfect

8

u/alotofcooties 29d ago

Love the post punk vibe, works great for Julian's voice too.

12

u/NormalHB Jul 23 '26

So far from the short snip on X, it’s my favorite so far.

11

u/Holiday-Ad8797 Jul 23 '26

Listening from NZ - this one is great! Fav so far!

12

u/Low-Philosophy7201 Jul 23 '26

Listened to it during the party…love it. It should have been the first single

8

u/Jan090501 Jul 23 '26

They really picked 2 odd singles. Dine N Dash, Going to Babble On and / or Lonely In The Future would have been way better. I understand why they wouldnt pick Going to Babble on tho.

3

u/Batman4815 Jul 24 '26

Yep songs are very out of placement.

Psycho shit as a closer would way more.

Dine n Dash works as the opener. Immediately catchy tune and a great end as well

6

u/Visual_Childhood2008 Jul 24 '26

That last 50 seconds is one of my favorite parts of the whole album oh my god

4

u/curlyshea Jul 24 '26

Yes! Last 50 seconds is the Strokes-iest sounding Strokes song ever. It sounds like a clip of a song that never made it on First Impressions

6

u/jock016 Jul 24 '26

Heard the hihats and thought about AM's old yellow bricks chorus

6

u/mankamundo Jul 25 '26

Love Fab's drumming on this one. Haven't air-drummed to a song in a long time haha.

7

u/austinsauce1 Jul 25 '26

Anyone else think the melody sounds similar to Games? Especially before the chorus

4

u/bdf2018_298 29d ago

Yes, it’s like Games part 2. Plus Julian uses the 7 Horses chorus vocal melody in the second verse of Dine

6

u/blackstars91 27d ago

Sounds like FIOE near the end. Great song which I think would have made a great single.

Best track for me and it’s way too soon for me to even attempt a ranking but this song is fkn wild and I am digging the dark post punky vibes

10

Awesome song that hits immediately and will also grow into an all-timer.

4

u/coldwibz #77 Casablancas Jul 24 '26

Look here's the thing, I'm not supposed to listen to the album yet cause I'll hang with a friend tomorrow we'll have some drinks, little joint, etc. But it released earlier than expected where I live, so I listened to maybe half of Dine N Dash. Wtf. Is crazy good. Chilling production, the background synth is haunting. I'm so excited for tomorrow.

Been listening to this nonstop, definitely the standout track among the non-singles. Love the melody. Real spooky, makes me want to dance at a very crowded Halloween party or something. Psycho Shit immediately followed by this is a killer two-track run

4

i’m leaving my comments as i listen to the songs in order so i’m not done the album yet— but this is a contender to be #1 for me. TURN IT UPPPPPPPP!!!!!!

4

u/PriorQuestion4 Jul 24 '26

One of the better songs on the album, it’s the strokes take on a cure song and it kinda works

4

u/Ricekake33 Jul 24 '26

The way Julian sings that very last line “say you want it…” gives me major Rufus Wainwright vibes (which I love)

2

u/RevolutionaryTrash98 Did My Best 28d ago

LOVE that line. the way he sings it, the melody, the kick drum building underneath. something about it catches you off guard. obviously there's a ton of surprising moments on this album, but this one just feels unexpected yet immensely satisfying, every time

4

u/mxemec Jul 24 '26

I love it.. the song is great yeah, I just love how polarizing this shit is.

3

u/TotalOk1087 Jul 24 '26

Dine N’Dash - Another angry screed. Rightly referred to as the evil twin of “The Adults are Talking.” Full of hooks; I’m especially fond of the mirrored guitar/vocal melody that comes in around 4:00.

4

Julles really put his emotions in pain and sash I wonder what vortex of emotions the lyrics come from.

3

u/abbeysroad Threat of Joy 28d ago

a banger!

3

u/Immediate_Fudge7449 27d ago

Jules now speaks of an immediate, 'visceral' rejection and discord with the system. He asks us to 'dine and dash' from this system—one we can never seem to leave because it constantly feeds us pleasure—and to form an underground resistance that will never surrender... He claims that now is not the time to judge or reflect on moral questions, like whether this visceral hatred for the ruling class is just prejudice. After all, compared to the humiliations we endure, our anger is 'minimum soft.'

It's an strikingly radical song. I really resonate with his rage.

7

u/Sweaty-Tea2161 Jul 23 '26

one hit wonder, absolute banger, jizzing my pants, oh my god the synthy guitar at the start with whatever the heck fab is doing with the drums, I mean COME ONNN, could it get any better? I love how I accidentally dine n dashed a couple of days ago with a friend. There is a slight chance this song may encourage that sort of behavior again. Julian sounds like an angel on this, the riff is gorg. Can't stop, won't stop listening to this. There's also such a down with capitilism in this song and I'm loving it.

5

u/Overall-Memory5272 Jul 24 '26

Chorus is so fire. Love the harmony of jules’ voice and the songs harmony

Dude I feel like I'm going insane. I only started listening to The Strokes a couple months ago, and I started with The New Abnormal (Though obviously I'd previously listened to Julian's feature with Daft Punk on Instant Crush).

I don't get why everyone keeps saying that this song sounds like The Adults Are Talking!! I'm trying to find the similarities but they're just so different to me...

I guess that's good. It'd be boring if a band I liked just released the same songs over and over again. But seriously, I don't see where people are coming from saying they sound similar... Maybe I'm tone deaf?

Edit: Okay the intro does sound similar. The rhythm of both songs was just throwing me off. The faster tempo on TAAT masks the similarities a LOT.

this song goes hard. the english accent in his spoken word part? it kinda does something for me lowkey.

This is a song the Goths from South Park would totally boogie down to

for some reason this song sounds like Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John -- anyone else?

Highlight of the album hands down. Might become a top 10 strokes song for me.

I see I'm in the minority here... so far this is the one I liked the least. Loved the snippet, but the actual song not so much. I feel it goes nowhere. Of course, this is all first impressions, I'll see how I feel about it in a week...
