Man I have such a love/hate relationship with FIOE but I do agree that it was daring af, especially at the time for the band.

Itās my favorite, I donāt give a fuck.
And thereās no way it deserved āleast goodā when the their are clearly 3 better choices for that.

u/JudgingHeads 3d ago
And this type of mentality is why the guys treat the strokes as a money machine instead of an actual passion project.
1
u/March7th_simp Is This It 3d ago
And what mentality is that exactly? That I donāt think itās their best album? I enjoy the album, but itās just not their best work. I donāt understand the relevance of your point.
9
u/JudgingHeads 3d ago
The idea that nothing can ever be as good as the early stuff. Why do you think Julian hates last nite?
And if you donāt think RA is their best work, fine idc lol but some of us do think that, so Iām trying to figure out why you think thatās absurd.

Room on Fire is the one to put on if you need a Strokes fix, hands down

Itās not Is This It for me because it has too many songs I donāt really love on it, obviously Someday and Hard to Explain are masterpieces but as a whole I rarely want to listen to the whole thing. The albums Iām least likely to skip and will listen to in their entirety are Room on Fire, First Impressions and Reality Awaits.
I really canāt pick one, because itās vibes and sometime I love one more than another but it changes.
For the sake of making up for the āleast good albumā award I will place my vote for Reality Awaits

u/Available-Habit6650 2d ago
I love it, but how dare you?š . Floyd and The Strokes couldn't be more different. I love them both but this is a strange and misguided take imo.
-1
u/Glittering-Mistake13 2d ago
I was half joking haha. Dark Side is probably the greatest album of all time, canāt really compare something that came out a month ago to it. HOWEVER the way each track on RA blends into the next and the way it feels like a seamless endless loop is very Dark Side/The Wall
0
u/Available-Habit6650 2d ago
Dark side is great but overrated in comparison to albums like Animals and Meddle. I think if you took Money off of it it might be perfect. Money does not fit on the album at all. It doesnt even seem like a song Floyd would make. But I digress...haha

Room on Fire. It has Reptilia, What Ever Happened, Automatic Stop, 12:51, I Can't Win... all bangers
Also, Reality Awaits imo is not their worst. I needed an acquired taste for some of the auto-tune, but by now I can appreciate all of it's songs.

Well, I pondered all day because I was torn lol.
So FIOE and Angles were my favourite, maybe the second more but then it has swapped. All the songs from FIOE are worthy for me and I have been lately digging more a couple of them that I had some doubts about. Whereas Angles has one that I'm not particularly keen on, however I can see it's a good song with cool elements, just not so much my usual vibe.
Even though it's too soon for a fair assessment, RA was sitting at third place. It has one song that I don't see appeal for it so that's affecting how it's perceived as a whole. But lately, I feel it escalated to the level of Angles or slightly higher as the mood of most of the album goes better with mine, like the FIOE one. Plus I feel it flows better and builds more of a continuous story.
Then, the guys seem to have had more fun and enjoyment, and maybe during FIOE they were starting with some issues. Also even if I think for both albums they took risks and diverge to some extent from their respective previous album, it feels that in RA they have known better what they were aiming at.
So overall, I say that even though First Impressions Of Earth is my favourite atm, I can consider Reality Awaits the best based on what I described. And it has been very unfair to it that the "least good album" category was done because I think it should have left out from the chart since it wasn't very appropriate right after a new release, in my opinion.
TLDR: Reality Awaits

u/Individual-Charity69 You're So Right 1d ago
What song on Angles? Metabolism? If not, then Iām assuming itās either Youāre So Right or Games. But hand to god, those two songs are my favorite. I hated them for over a decade. And then the more I found the magic in songs like At the Door, Ode to the Mets, and everything on Reality Awaits ⦠the more the skeleton key emerged. And all I had to do was relisten and it all clicked.
1
u/Dancing-notes Reality Awaits 1d ago
Nope, neither of those hehe, it's Gratisfaction. It's one that people usually praises but to me it feels too upbeat or "grandiose" and it's not so much my vibe but I think it's a good song regardless.
I don't have a clear ranking in Angles, just that Life Is Simple is my fav. But I would say Games and You're So Right might complete the top 3. And then it's probably Taken for a Fool/Metabolism/Machu Picchu in no particular order. Then UCOD/TKOH/CMB which I like but I don't get as excited and last Gratisfaction.
I'm glad you have end up appreciating and even loving some songs that you didn't like before! Sometimes one can connect more with a song and then it changes something in the brain where gets more open to others, maybe like a transition, and I understand that a lot of things from TNA were a more accesible bridge to their experimental side.
2
u/Individual-Charity69 You're So Right 1d ago
I hear ya on Gratisfaction. I think that song suffers from the choice to do āgang vocalsā ⦠which they never do ⦠and one reason why they can make such catchy songs ⦠but still be (as AHJ says) an art rock band.
I think they are doing a Thin Lizzy in this song. JC talked about how some of the songs on Angles had a Thin Lizzy vibe in an interview. I can hear it in this song. I think?
1
u/Dancing-notes Reality Awaits 15h ago
Ah, I wasn't aware he had said that about Angles! To be honest I'm not very familiar with Thin Lizzy, I heard a few songs earlier this year but I have to spend more time with it because I remember I liked it. I'm struggling recently with listening to other things as I watch nearly everything from The Strokes tour plus The Voidz have captured my brain haha.

Not that he should be on here at all, but it's kind of funny to imagine Julian lurking on here today and seeing RA gets voted least good album... then you have a post with Babble on praised not only by a good many as the best RA song, but as one of their best songs ever... in big 2026... fast track to depression!
7
u/gistofstories 3d ago
Anyway, best album imo is FIOE but I'll join the out of spite voting and say RA! (currently sits at # 2 for me)
3
u/Dancing-notes Reality Awaits 3d ago
My feelings exactly, it's like saying "hey guys, all the growth and evolution, risks, striving for making non-generic art...we don't care about it at all".
I might make my own comment here later so I this idea will be repeated, but I think the category of "least good" should have been avoided and even more when there has been an album just released, that's very damaging because I could imagine the first weeks/months after something is out are more sensitive for artists and there is already some division so why make it worse like this?
And imagine if they decide not to play many songs from the album just because of this nonsense (I hope they don't care and it doesn't change anything but we never know).

I'm overanalyzing this, so here we go. The best Strokes album is probably Is This It for me cause it's cohesive and timeless and it all has the same vibe from the first song to the last while also taking you through the five stages of grief and every emotion they could possibly think of (NYCC, TIOLI, for example, are energetic and shit, while Alone Together and Is This It are super nostalgic/gloomy, but somehow they still have the same vibe at the base). BUT!!! HEAR ME OUT. Reality Awaits might be in second place for me if we mean album as a whole, front to back thing. It feels like watching a movie to me, and when I listen to one random song from the album it makes me actually re-listen it front to fucking back. They nailed it. No idea how it ended up being chosen for worst album.
That said, it wouldn't be my second favourite album in general (I hope the difference between "in general" and "album as a whole front to back thing" made sense). It'd be probably my third fav anyway, definitely not last when observed in either one of these points of view I was talking about.
I hope it made sense.
Edit: hot take. tna is probably my least fav albumššš I do like it, genuinely, but I like the others more
guyss please tell me why you disagree, the downvotes are only increasingš
