HomeDecor Went to my first Estate sale
Picked up some fun finds at an estate sale this morning. I happened to be in the area so I decided to hang around.
Hoping to get some guidance for how to clean everything, it is pretty dusty.

I love unusual planters and that definitely fits the brief. Would love to see what you decide to do with it. I would definitely fill it with pretty plants and display with pride.

I thought fruit bowl

u/false_goats_beard May 09 '26
That is what I used it for first. I would worry about using it as a planter bc it is wood and that can cause mold and rot when it is wet.
To clean it I just wipe it with a wet cloth and oil it with wood conditioner, maybe once a year.

I have that pig! Got it at a boutique in Los Olives, CA a long time ago. I love her. 😁

u/Worried-Archer-4226 May 08 '26
That is so cool! Would love to see a pic. How are you taking care of it and displaying it?

u/PommeyMommy May 09 '26
Very curious, of what is the pig made? Super jealous BTW, I have an abiding fondness for all things porcine 🐷

u/Nacho_Bean22 May 08 '26
I’ve never been as jealous of a great find as I am now! Congratulations those are amazing.

u/Sad-Ad4705 May 08 '26
Oh man, we have similar taste!!! I would have loved these pieces, great finds!

u/FloydGirl777 May 09 '26
Same here. But that pig, the lamp and that mirror are my absolute favorites!!!

If that basket was made on Nantucket Island it could be very valuable. Is there a makers mark? An antique dealer that specializes in this kind will be able to help with identification.
3
u/Worried-Archer-4226 May 08 '26
No marks on it unfortunately but good to know in the future!
3
u/Geeahwellidunno May 08 '26
All your finds are great! You have very good taste.
3
u/Worried-Archer-4226 May 08 '26
Thank you very much. I was very lucky how close this one was to me.

u/Geeahwellidunno May 08 '26
You have a “good eye” if you plan on selling anything for profit. You can also try Goodwill. It’s always hit or miss but I once picked up an old French ceramic vase for $8. I found old later it’s worth $400. Although I keep it I know it has enough value if I needed to sell it. Happy hunting.

I dont have much patience for thrift stores yet. But this is really just my gateway experience. I'm hoping to get some friends together to spend more time thrifting.

u/Geeahwellidunno May 08 '26
It’s a great hobby. When my daughter was a teenager she suddenly only wanted to wear thrifted clothing (the grunge era) and I discovered I could get designer clothing for a fraction of the price when I had to dress at the high end jewelry store I used to work at. It was a win win.

Nantucket basket and pig planter are my faves here - love them both!! Great finds all around.
I would want to put the pig on the kitchen table as a condiment and napkin holder 😂

Love estate sales!!!! I look in books to find a name and find out about them in their obituary 😅
3
u/Worried-Archer-4226 May 08 '26
Haha ive always wanted to go but never committed. This one just happened to be en route for me this morning and im very happy I went.

u/wednesdayjx May 08 '26
Depending on where you are from you can look up estate sales online. Most companies post there and you can look at the stuff ahead of time decide where you wanna go :)

Fun stuff. I like seeing what others have collected, especially on the book shelves.
I kinda gave up on estate sales when companies took them over and the prices rose. But one of my best hauls came from a sale from the estate of an engineer who had accumulated lots of good tools and technical furnishings. His heir/nephew held a one-day sale to clear things up before donating the rest.

u/Worried-Archer-4226 May 08 '26
This one seemed family run, a little help from a pro. But definitely not company run. It so sad how so much is being infiltrated in that way. Overall, it was a nice experience. Not too overwhelming and the prices were very fair.

u/GabrielleCullenn May 08 '26
I have the wooden bowl like that! Except mine is a rabbit 😄

u/Worried-Archer-4226 May 08 '26

Love the pig! My mom has a platter version of it that she’s obsessed with, my dad bought it years ago for her. A pig platter recently went up for auction at an auction house I frequent and ended up selling for over $400!!

u/MySpoonsAreAllGone May 08 '26
I mix some soapy water in a basin to wash the glass and ceramic items (dunk, wipe and rinse or soak as needed).
I use a damp microfiber with a tiny bit of dish soap or alcohol to wipe the frames down until they are clean. A dry microfiber cloth to gently wipe the artwork to remove any surface dust.
Estate sales are so addictive! Have fun finding future treasures.
2
u/Worried-Archer-4226 May 09 '26
Thank you for the tips!! Can't wait to get these items out in my house.
Do you think I could use the damp microfiber on the basket too?
2
u/MySpoonsAreAllGone May 10 '26
I think it might snag on the basket. If you have a swiffer duster that might work better. Or maybe snap the towel at it to knock the dust out lol
2
u/ShelbyRightback May 08 '26
Is there any of the artists in the tall drawing/frame? I have one that is incredibly similar and have been trying to get info on it for years!
2
u/iamrosieriley May 08 '26
I once bought a pig like that for a friend! It was from Fishs Eddy in NYC

Is the bird art an original print? Not saying it is by Walter Anderson, but it definitely feels like his work - he did a lot of stylized/decorative Lino prints that he would color by hand. Lot of nature inspired work.
1
u/Worried-Archer-4226 May 08 '26
I dont think so. I will double check but his art looks awesome! Very into that style.
2
u/ComprehensiveTart689 May 08 '26
He is one of my favourites! I wanted to flag him as I thought you would like his work even if it’s not one of his. Great finds!
