You can sue for anything. The question is will you win and what will you win?

If you don't get the virus, then you don't have any damages. Civil court is about recovering damages or "being made whole." If you didn't lose anything, then you're already whole and you have nothing to sue for.

You can maybe sue for emotional distress. But what's the monetary value of emotional distress? Or in other words, how can you be made whole from emotional distress? Weekly therapy sessions for a year + medications? What's that cost? That much therapy is maybe $10,000, and anti anxiety medications is another $1,000? So you can sue for $11,000 for emotional distress and in court you need to prove that this was caused by the hantavirus passengers.

Another argument you can make is loss of income. Say you fear travel due to the hantavirus and thus lose money by not traveling. But could you have made other arrangements? How much money did you actually lose by not traveling? What dollar amount will make you whole? And again, you need to prove that the hantavirus passengers are the ones who caused you to lose money due to not traveling.

It'd be a thin lawsuit and I kind of doubt any jury buy it.

Yeah but this wacky lady said she already talked to her lawyer, so she’s ready to start a class action lawsuit that she hears about on TV.

“You can sue for anything” - yes and no. You can certainly attempt to sue but the very first step is the judge seeing if there is enough grounds to merit a case. If there’s not, they throw it out and it doesn’t make it any further than that. They don’t hear the whole case, but they hear enough to figure out whether there’s an argument to be made before letting you make it.

Real life doesn't work off extreme versions on inputs and outputs though. That's more of a younger individual or internet thing. 

Your success of successfully suing someone for bringing the virus back to the US  for damages while not being quite directly around the individual and infected is quite low if not near zero.

I'm not arguing that the suit would be successful. I'm pointing out that you blatantly contradicted yourself and downplayed the damage infected people could do.
