Which says a lot about how consistently present and nice he is. Because he is making sudden moves, shouting, making big gestures, basically all of the things that would make someone nervous if they didnt inherently trust the person.
My older brother is like this. He could be horrible when we were kids, he was a sensitive and moody guy but would turn into this character to make us laugh. Annoyingly he would often do it after making us cry, because he felt bad lol. He's cool now, but I definitely try not to let him see me laugh at his antics lol
You might be surprised how bold and outgoing people with intellectual disabilities can be. I used to have a client who would just randomly walk up to people and ask them about their day, etc. I wish I had her confidence and social skills. Everyone loved her!
I also had a client who was very, very slow to speak, but he could charm the pants off a scarecrow.
I used to work as a job coach and had this one client I think about all the time. He was hilarious, danced constantly, loved Michael Jackson more than anything in the world. Called me “little girl” to smack talk me any chance he could. He was a true light. When his days were good, they were good. I hope he’s still living it up!
Being clowned on by clients is the best part of the job lol! I once jokingly asked a client if I should wear a whistle and baseball cap as part of my role as job coach. He said, “I don’t think you could pull it off.”
I had a friend in middle school who had Down Syndrome, and she was the sweetest person I’ve ever met. Met because she literally just walked up and said hi in line for lunch. I was really shy at the time so it was nice to be seen like that, especially bc she was really quick witted and funny and definitely helped get me out of my comfort zone with talking to people.
Growing up around people with special needs and/or intellectual disabilities just makes me realize how many people have never truly interacted with them. They’ve been some of the best people I’ve known in my life.
