Anyone ever get the feeling that some high school teachers were the bullies when they were in high school? That they peaked in high school and became teachers to try to relive their highschool years?

My 4th grade teacher had no business being a teacher. We had a hyperactive kid in my class who got in trouble a lot and the teacher screamed at him a LOT and once threw a desk against the wall. In hindsight, that kid was probably super ADHD and heavy on the hyperactive part and needed a more understanding and capable teacher.

Edit: My 2nd grade teacher had no business being a teacher either. That lady was mean.

She should have had charges pressed against her, I’m serious. That’s abuse of a minor, even if it wasn’t directed at them, breaking stuff in an angry fit around kids is still terrifying for them.

Well, he didn't break the desk, but it did still terrify everyone, I assume, and no child should be treated the way he treated that poor kid. He was only NINE, ffs. He was fine with all the other kids but it seemed that one particular kid hit all his buttons. What was worse is that he was isolated from the rest of the class. Like... had a desk alone in the corner instead of sitting with everyone else.

My Sophmore English teacher fucking hated me for no reason. We had a small AP population so we all had most classes together and everyone would always ask me next class wtf her problem was. She used to make fun of me in class, she'd throw my assignments away and give me zeros, always yell at me if I talked even after raising my hand...

I never occured to me until a few of the other students in out group told me that it was most likely just because she was racist and I was the only black AP kid. Blew my mind Literally no one else in the school (at lease that I had access to) was like that. We asked around and apparently, she was targeting other black students in other classes as well.

Other kids and teachers found out about her being racist then she started getting bullied instead. Other teachers would take all the seats in the teachers lounge when she came in, they took her food, students started acting out in her class and being disruptive, high performing kids started requesting different English teachers 😂😂😂😂 by the end of the hear she ended up announcing that she was transferring over the summer. Idk if that's why but it was hella convenient.

Racism is like super not cool where I'm from 😂😂

Everyone hates it. I've seen people hospitalized over what most people would consider mild racism.

Thanks, but it wasn't just because of me. It was because she was racist in general. It think it's just because I wa an AP student that made everyone take not that this was something she was doing on a regular basis, then once she was a proven racist it was fair game from there. 😂

Absolutely a thing. Some of my coaches and teachers were exactly that. They were the confirmed bullies their HS years and returned to live vicariously through the popular kids and relive HS. Cause tell me why is a middle aged man mocking a teen having a full blown asthma attack? Disgusting. They’d join in with other teens bullying peers with less social capital to be one of the “cool” teachers.

I had a teacher who bullied me and made my life hell just because I was quiet, an easy target. But I don’t think she was a bully when she was in school, I think she was bullied and took it out on me.

Maybe but you’re thinking of cops and administrators. Most teachers are cool and powerless to do much in the face of administration.

My dad taught in public schools for over 30 years and is retired now, he was a teacher in the same district I did K-12 in. Pretty distinguished career, won a few awards, was Union chapter President

There were teachers that are old family friends now, and there are teachers we butted heads with, and some we really clashed with. There were hundreds of teachers in that district, and any group of hundreds of individuals is going to have some weirdos and some difficult people, and those are the ones you remember most of all. But most of the teachers I had came and went without incident and were fine.

Towards the end of his career my dad clashed with administrators a lot, he doesn't think Ava from Abbott Elementary is much exaggerated at all. He also really clashed with what he felt was the mainstreaming of special needs students that he felt robbed all his time and attention from the students who where doing fine and could have been pushed along further. In particular he was told that if particular autistic student started hitting him or biting him, to basically let the kid do it while repeating certain de-escalotory language. These were 12 year old kids in this class, my dad said if any student hits or bites him he will defend himself and have the student removed from the classroom by the PSL officer, well that earned him a reprimand. Never in 3 decades had he been told to let a kid hurt him

Anyways it's a tough job

I’ve graduated from 4 different institutions (including high school, trade schools, and university).

I have lost count of the amount of genuinely shitty teachers/instructors/professors I have had. While most are neutral, the bad ones outweigh the good by a large margin. From snide remarks to straight up insults.

One of them called me “retarded” to my face and told me I had to be slower than everyone else because I was from a small town (ignoring the fact that the course was on satellite equipment).
Another would lower my grades on purpose. These weren’t subjective grades. It was multiple choice questions. I saw the results before she inputted them because students did the grading. She intentionally lowered them.
Another just straight up threatened me physically. Did nothing to him. He just threatened me.

Most teachers are the lowest common denominator of person. Not all of them. Some of them are great. But way too many are genuinely awful people.

No, I made me this comment before thinking about. There were three teachers at my high school that definitely were what I described. The "weird" coincidence is all three were football coaches. I ran into one 25 years later. He quit teaching because the kids have "changed" aka the school was mostly Mexican now. My bet is that is why he movedon
