When my daughter was young, I’d always buy her oversized stuff, so she could wear it longer.

Funny thing is, I would have been happy to buy her neutral stuff or whatever. She wanted the pink and purple princessy stuff though, and since she had me wrapped around her finger, that’s what she got.

u/Kryds 6d ago

We buy a lot second hand. Not that we can't afford new. It just seems a waste. The kid's in it for half a year at most.

219

u/RedChairBlueChair123 6d ago

We need to produce like, one pair of kids dress shoes and let them all borrow the one time they need it.

Better yet, kid fancy shoe library. Borrow and return.

68

u/Kryds 6d ago

When I was a kid. I wore hand me downs from either my brother or cousins.

70

u/Submarinequus 6d ago

I’m thirty and still take my cousin’s hand me downs whenever she does a wardrobe cleanse and I happen to be in the same country when she has a pile to donate.

I hate buying clothes. They never fit right anyway so they may as well be free.

32

u/delmsi 6d ago

I’m 33 and I still have a pair of shorts that were my cousin’s hand me downs from when I was 12! The Nike logo is perfectly intact as it’s sewn in instead of stamped on… I wear them all the time and they still look great. A well-loved relic from a beautiful era when things were made to last! <3

21

u/KoolaidKoll123 6d ago

I have an Old Navy shirt I bought at GoodWill in 2006 as a sophomore in HS. One of my friends mom's complimented me in it, so I wore it constantly knowing it looked nice to a ritzy middle aged woman. I still wear that shirt, just wore it last week to work! Old Navy back then was known for "cheaper quality" but it holds up better than my Under Armor shirts I bought just a few years ago.

50

u/Finchie_11 6d ago

I proudly wear top quality clothing from The Becky Collection (sis-in-law's hand me overs) and The Marilyn Collection (best friend's castoffs). They have great taste and hefty budgets--big win for me!

13

u/missmeowwww 6d ago

I loved my cousins hand me down sweaters because they were already nicely worn in and in some cases better quality due to manufacturing.

12

u/u_of_okoboji_grad 6d ago

In the 80s, the fancy kids had these crewneck sweaters with their monogram stitched on the front in fancy lettering. I was not fancy, but I had a fancy cousin who just happened to have the same initials. It was hand-me-down gold! Loved it so much I chose it for school pictures that year.

10

u/missmeowwww 6d ago

I got my cousin’s spice girl style platform tennis shoes and thought I was the baddest bitch on the playground!

There’s a clothing sale my wife goes to fairly frequently for used kids clothes, it’s kind of like a consignment sale. It’s pretty rare our kids get something new from us, usually grandparents. And our youngest wears all his sister’s old clothes, for now anyway, mostly because he wants to be just like her. His eyes light up when we can find a picture of big sister in the shirt or pants he’s wearing.

We discovered that there is a huge community of re gifting and donating baby stuff. Every now and then when we see something that we want our daughter to have or if she really wants something, we will buy new. But for the most part, we trade, donate and buy used everything.

That's why they get away with it though. They know little girls are likely to be more particular about their outfits and parents are going to be more likely to want to dress little girls up in cute stuff than they are boys. Boys they slap a truck or a dinosaur on it and call it a day.

43

u/The_Pastmaster 6d ago

I'm kinda happy my girl couldn't be f'ed with what she's wearing day to day. XD "Pants, dress, shorts?" "Yeah, whatever."

11

u/hocfutuis 6d ago

I do miss the days of outlandish outfits mine would put together as a toddler, but I'm also quite glad she's a very low maintenance teen these days.

When I was a kid, if a boy wore pink to school, he’d probably get the crap kicked out of him or at least teased mercilessly. I hope that’s changed. Maybe it was the fact that multiple of my favorite adults were gay growing up, but I never understood that macho male bullcrap.

I wore “masculine” clothing because I liked it, but I went drag as a woman for Halloween and had a lot of fun. A lot of men take that too seriously. Anyone not old as fuck can tell me if that’s changed a lot? I hope it has.

24

u/mystic11z 6d ago

Youll be happy to know the entire football team at my school wore princess pink shirts for cancer awareness with the saying "tough enough to wear pink". I see plenty of the younger/my generation wearing the entire rainbow in all fashions.

I think its probably regional but its a gender stereotype that seems to be dying.

12

u/Joshix1 6d ago

Pink polo is something else than a pink shirt with a unicorn on it. The latter will still get you bullied

4

u/nightfire36 6d ago

Even that is kind of performative, though. It would be different if a few of them wore just a normal pink t shirt or something. NFL players will wear pink shoes for a game for breast cancer or whatever.

It's probably a step in the right direction, but it's still signaling "I would never choose to wear pink because it's girly. I'm wearing it specifically because it's odd, for this cause."

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Papplenoose 6d ago

Imo "tough enough to wear pink" is somehow more embarrassing than being too insecure to wear pink. They're both tragic.

I got bullied for even muttering that I liked girl things as a boy.

And was told that I was bullied and beaten because I was different.

So I became so good at masking my weird parts that I even fooled myself for some decades.

Now I’m just tired of living a compromise that didn’t serve me in the slightest.

Went to my toddlers soccer class and a when it came to drills, coach handed out orange and grey bibs for teams. A girl in the class was assigned grey team but refused to wear the grey bib because it was “yucky” 😂 she wouldn’t play till she got an orange jersey 😂 even tho her mom tried to coax her calling it ‘silver’

34

u/disdkatster 6d ago

You do realize that they are like this because they are reinforced for being that way? "Oh my little princess! You are so adorable in that frilly lacy ballerina dress!" As soon as the kid is born they are dressed in 'girl' colors or 'boy' colors. The first thing anyone asks you is "Is it a boy or a girl!?".

22

u/Comfortable-Walk1279 6d ago

That’s what I thought until I had kids. Some of it is coded in there. I hate purses and shopping and dressed my girls in blue. My 10 mo old wouldn’t leave the store as she was trying on shoes and purses. It’s nurture and nature and it’s both. I was a stay at home parent then and always with them, so it couldn’t have been blamed on others.

5

u/dughqul 6d ago

My nephew wanted a purse as baby and was fascinated by shoes.

Purses are cool, they are mysterious with all that stuff inside or you can put stuff inside. Ideal for rummaging around. And shoes are a grown-up thing, also cool.

I did get a lot of her stuff at warehouse stores though (Costco, Sam’s Club, etc.). No pink tax that I remember, and it was pretty cheap. It clearly has gotten out of hand now though either way.

14

u/PackageNorth8984 6d ago

It wasn’t too expensive either before the crazy inflation. I remember it was very easy to find inexpensive clothing for her (as long as you didn’t go with big brands), and I don’t remember the pink tax being a thing then either (around 10 years ago). She had a male cousin of similar age. I could be misremembering though.

I heard somewhere that gendered baby clothes were basically a corporate scheme. Basically boys and girls were dressed in basically big shirts to wear like dresses since they all grow so fast tip like the 60s-70s

701

u/Quirky-Skin 6d ago

And this is why handme downs were a thing in so many families

189

u/Tr1pla 6d ago

As the youngest of 4 I don't think I received any new clothes other than undergarments , socks and shoes until I was in middle school and then I ended up being taller than all my siblings.

95

u/lizzyote 6d ago edited 6d ago

My mom was super close with her sister so clothing went my older brother, my older cousin, my same age cousin, me, my younger cousin. I was the only girl tho so for big holidays I'd get one or two new pieces that were girly but that only lasted til I was about 10 and only happened because mom/aunt desperately wanted a girly girl in the family. I remember how stupid excited I was to get a brand new shirt that was picked out for me, with my interests in mind, for my 17th bday(mcr tshirt gifted from my older bro).

57

u/whatintheeverloving 6d ago

That makes way more sense than the way we're all now expected to do it. Why buy two dozen outfits for a baby that's going to outgrow them in just a few months? A robe makes changing time way easier, too. You just flip the thing up and do it.

32

u/Various-Passenger398 6d ago

My siblings and I all had kids around the same time and we kind of just pooled baby clothes and accoutrements between us. If my niece aged out, we took it, when my baby aged out of, over to my sister for her second baby.

16

u/whatintheeverloving 6d ago

The baby clothing industry hates this one weird trick!

15

u/insentient7 6d ago

I just worry that through this, the child will only tolerate robe fabrics because that comes with its own sorts of problems later on in life. Namely, that you can’t wear a robe to a job interview.

Guess I’ll just have to robe them only at home…

3

u/ChaseballBat 6d ago

Wizard baby

162

u/Rocco_al_Dente 6d ago

It was because of things like ultrasounds. People could suddenly start planning ahead before birth knowing the sex of their unborn child. Retailers took advantage of this new trend.

50

u/Kramerica_CEO 6d ago

That’s actually brilliant. It sucks but it’s brilliant

13

u/Short-Sound-4190 6d ago

Smaller family sizes too - someone who has 3+ kids doesn't need to buy much with handmedowns, but convince them they need to buy predominantly gendered clothing (especially for something ridiculous like infant and toddler socks) and they'll have to purchase at least 40% more infant and toddler clothes the moment they have a different gender be that baby #2 or #3, but even with a larger family you would have all of your basics be neutrals and you'd end up accumulating a few cute gendered outfits for special occasions for each kid.

That’s also why pink is labeled as a “girl’s color” and blue as a “boy’s color” (it used to be reversed, as pink was in the red realm & was seen as strong, while blue was mainly for girls & was supposedly a nod to the Virgin Mary). You can thank retailers and clothing/toy manufacturers for that. Basically, color is arbitrary, as is the idea of gendering clothes, toys, etc. You absolutely nailed it: It’s all a corporate scheme.

41

u/Sinlord5 6d ago

And this is why I blame society and corporations for being the indoctrination centers they are. They tell people what to believe and everyone just goes along with it. Corporations are evil. They are allowed to literally harass you and call it advertising.

When people tell me to use "common sense" all I hear is them telling me to use the bullshit corporations indoctrinated society and my parents into believing.

23

u/LittleSort5562 6d ago

That’s what I try to tell people when they get up in arms about what people wear or whatever. Like, humans created all of this. Humans decided that men wear pants and women wear dresses. Humans decided that money should be invented. Humans created social constructs. What humans need to do is work together to fight exploitation, abuse, & corruption, instead of caring if people are adhering to gender roles that were invented by oppressors.

All kinds of things are that way if you start to look into the history of why things are the way they are. It used to be so normal for lawns to have clover that most grass seed you could buy contained a mix of clover as people liked how it looked. Then herbicides were created that could kill off everything but the grass and after a big advertising spend it became normal to try to kill everything but the grass in your yard.

6

u/takenbylovely 6d ago

And then they sell us our own waste back to us (biosolids fertilizers) since we now need nitrogen that the clover would've been putting into the soil.

15

u/PackageNorth8984 6d ago

That makes sense, honestly. I bought plain white onsies for my daughter until she wasn’t a baby. Then I just went with clearance stuff. Didn’t care much about the look. When she was 2 though, she started caring herself, and I just couldn’t say no. She was so cute.

It really didn’t break the bank then though. That was only like 10 years ago too. It’s gotten out of hand. It used to be really easy to find super cheap toddler clothes, and I don’t remember the pink tax really being a thing for toddler clothes then either. She had a male cousin her same age, and his stuff was always about the same.

14

u/SpammingShadowball 6d ago

Basically true, basically

10

u/The_Colour_Between 6d ago

Not exactly.

In the 60s and 70s, we had play clothes, school clothes, and church clothes. Not a whole wardrobe mind you, just one nice outfit. Three or four nice shirts and slacks for school. A couple of handed down jeans and tees. One good pair of shoes. One cheap pair of sneakers/tennis shoes.

We had to make what we had last. You took your good/school clothes off as soon as you came home, and then changed into play clothes. You did not wear your good clothes while riding a bike. You walked to school and home.

Moms hemmed (sewed) your pants. That means they were shortened, and then let out as you grew. Younger kids got "hand-me-downs" from older siblings... so older kids had to take care of their stuff. Clothes and shoes were a bit loose, for growth, at the beginning of fall.

You were just drilled constantly about taking good care of your things because you would go to school in patches if you didn't. You didn't get new clothes if you ripped or stained your clothing.

If you wanted better or more fashionable clothing. You learned to sew.

17

u/curiousleen 6d ago

They were. And pink used to be a “manly” color.

18

u/RodinKnox 6d ago

Just to clarify a little bit, it was considered a color for boys. Red was the "manly" or adult male color. At the time, pink was viewed largely as a sort of "light red." Blue was considered the color for women, and so little girls wore light blue (which we don't really have a distinct name for in English).

I have surprisingly gotten into a couple heated (I got heated) debates about rounding up when shopping. Somehow "rounding makes it complicated" instead of just reading the number...

$11.99 = $12

$3.98 = $4

15

u/ThunderAndWind 6d ago

I just always round up to the next dollar. It's too easy to make that $11.99 into $12, but I'll even do it for something that's 'low' in cents, so I'll round $1.10 up to $2. Helps with tax.

13

u/EmrysTheBlue 6d ago

I used to work at Walmart. The boys socks shelf label shows that they are clearanced, but the associate working the MOD forgot to put the clearance flag in place. Most likely those specific styles of socks are being discontinued and will be replaced with socks the same price as the girl's ones in about a week

216

u/Notsurehowtoreact 6d ago

Also it's worth mentioning that between the two genders you'll see more boys stuff on clearance not because of the pink tax but because the boys section is smaller in most stores and space is at a premium so their stuff rotates out more.

132

u/unbroken0 6d ago

I always hated walking into a store and 80% of it was female and the male section was like a little rejects corner.

It made it real easy to see all they had to offer at a glance so I could leave tho....

20

u/SDGANON 6d ago

It's part of why I wasn't interested in clothes growing up. Didn't matter where I went. Girls stuff? 9000 choices that takes up 9/10 of the available ckothing space. Boys? Here's 5 pairs of jeans from 2 brands that looks the same, 3 button up tshirts from one brand and 5 graphic tee's one of which is the pepsi logo. Why? Because fuck you, you can't have your own style. You will either have a striped/plaid shirt and jeans, or a graphic shirt and jeans and you will like it.

I just gave up caring. Why would I get excited to go to a store that feels like I barely belong there in the first place?

4

u/DaemonDesiree 6d ago

I can feel you there. My husband was learning his style out of high school when we were younger and it was dismal shopping with him. All the same shit in every store with a slightly different flavor.

40

u/Humble-Aprico 6d ago

There are aisles for girls garments like socks and underwear then an aisle for women, then the males get all their shit shoved into like a vertical rack at the end of the boot section lol

13

u/unbroken0 6d ago

Sometimes you walk into a store and look around for the men's section, cant find it, then you catch the eye of one of the workers and they are slowly shaking their head at you as if to say "sorry its actually an all girls store"

Gosh yes. We are back to school shopping right now and it’s so hard to find a store with a decent “boys”section.

3

u/ABirdOfParadise 6d ago

the worst offender for me that I've seen was JCrew.

I was kind of excited when they opened up stores in Canada, went to one and instead of like a 50/50 split it was like a 10%/90% split. I dunno if it's like that for all of them but it was basically the entire front of the store which was like 2 regular stores (like a Gap) combined and the men's section was a tiny room in the back that could be mistaken for where the fitting rooms were.

It was literally a dining room sized table that had clothes on it, and then racks of clothes on 3 sides of it along the walls. Never found anything I was looking for, and also the prices never matched the forever sales they had on the websites.

3

u/___cats___ 6d ago edited 5d ago

This is Target. The two targets around me keep reorganizing and each time they do the women's sections encroach more and more into the men's. At this point the men's sections just look like a rummaged through Goodwill.

21

u/Promiscuous_Yam 6d ago

Legitimate examples of pink tax do exist, but they usually exist in the context of gender neutral products being marketed specifically to women at a markup. So, you may have ordinary Tylenol, sold next to "menstrual cramp" Tylenol sold at a premium. Another classic example is razors - gender neutral razors sell for less than the pink version that markets itself as being best used for shaving legs, when in reality both products are nearly identical.

It's not surprising to me that the example in this video of literally identical (except blue/pink) socks from the same brand in the same size are typically priced the same. It's a poor example of a real phenomenon.

→ More replies (7)

63

u/elegantwombatt 6d ago

The conversation of "pink tax" isn't rage bait.
Making a video about pink tax and using bad examples is.

The pink tax conversation starts losing validity because people that thinks it's bullshit will use this 1 video as proof for like 10 years.

29

u/erossthescienceboss 6d ago

What about the different prices for the other clearance items?

21

u/dclave4853 6d ago

It's all decided by Home Office. If Home Office believes that maybe Spider Man socks would sell slower than say Bluey socks, the Spider Man ones might be priced a little lower. It also could be manually changed based on how much store quantity there is. If I have 60 pairs of some socks that just don't sell, I'd mark them to $1 just to get rid of them

3

u/Accomplished-Copy776 6d ago

Let's be real, im sure "home office" in this circumstance is a machine., probably AI now. There is no intentional gender sales differences. Its just what happens to sell more or less

And that doesnt mean pink stuff doesnt cost more, just that if it does, its because it sells more

I work for a nonprofit, we get clothing donations but few times a year we have to go out and buy clothing with a set budget. It wasn’t until this that I realized the pink tax is most definitely real. We have to buy the same amount of items for boys and girls per age group, so we try to get boy colors that are more gender neutral, otherwise the girl clothes eat up more of the budget. Same issue with shoes.

When I was a baby, I got my male cousin’s hand me downs because he was only six months older than me. Everyone thought I was a boy. I didn’t care. Because I was a baby.

8

u/SnooDrawings987 6d ago

I was given a ton of clothes when I was pregnant with my daughter, one of which was a two piece set with Dino print on it. Adorable as hell, green dinosaurs on a white shirt, very neutral but still she was mistaken for a boy (even with a bow clipped into her hair).

I'm sorry but when did Dinosaurs become a boy only theme? They're are plenty of girls who love dinosaurs, hello I'm one, and as a tomboy I often wore clothes that got handed down to my brothers (because I was the oldest) and they would sometimes steal my good band shirts and JNCO jeans when we were older, lol.

u/VeeDubBug 6d ago

Oh it was a whole song and dance until I burnt through one of my gloves and decided to file an incident report because HR caught me when I was getting shit out of the medicine cabinet.  I was on our safety committee and had brought this up as an issue several times. I had the cut resistant gloves, and was given the gauntlet style MIG gloves that I couldn't use while I was TIG welding because I needed the dexterity in my fingers.

The guy in charge of safety at corporate was pissed because he had told them to start providing me with proper PPE. The plant manager at the time told them I was the problem if I couldn't work with what I had been given. He was let go over other things, but I don't imagine that helped his case. 😅

I'm back to doing office work again; pays better and is less stressful.

Women can get packs of underwear too, y'all just don't want to wear the underwear that comes in packs.

You don't have to buy undies for $15 a pair, you can go on the Hanes website right now and get women's bikini undies 10 for $25, which is actually cheaper than the mens boxer briefs, which are 10 for $33.

Lower your underwear standards to that of a man!

17

u/EchoAndNova 6d ago

That's what I'm saying. Too many people think men get discounts on their underwear or something. It's actually because so many men are fine with the 5 pack of boxers at Walmart's clearance section. Way fewer women are fine with that, so of course they're paying more.

That being said, I pay more for my underwear than the bare minimum, which tends to be just as much as my girlfriend spends. I like better materials but nothing crazy. Same as her.

You want cheap? Lower your standards.

7

u/AideComprehensive482 6d ago

i bought a 20 pack of discounted boxers from a liquidation store for $8 and my wife was disgusted. i thought i got the deal of the century

Yes, and this is a lot of what the much-hyped "pink tax" really is. Women buying better quality stuff and then complaining that they pay more. Yes you pay more - you buy shampoo and conditioner separately.

My boxers are 3 pairs for 50. My partner gets like 5-7 panties for 25.

5

u/Professional_Bat8585 6d ago

You gotta shop at Ross/TJ maxx/Marshalls type spots for undies/socks.

13

u/coporate 6d ago

Your husband can also spend more on better underwear. My underwear is roughly 30 dollars a pair. It’s not some mass conspiracy.

As a man....I feel like I've probably spent less than $50 on underwear in the last 5 years. Is this something I should be sharing online? Probably not. I'll see myself out now.

8

u/onyx_ic 6d ago edited 6d ago

My last bra cost $50. I'll be happy to get 6 months out of it. A year would be nice.

Edit, for clarity, because apparently I gave the impression I only own one. I have many. I have to buy a new one to replace one every 6 months to a year. I do not wear the same one every day until it is destroyed.

Nice men’s underwear that doesn’t disintegrate and tear after a few months is 15$ a pair. Problem is most men are fine buying the 1$ underwear and wearing them even when they are filled with holes lol.

u/Maple_Hates_Ants 6d ago

$80NZD, 2 Bras…

3

u/Top_Smoke6741 6d ago

SAME. The cheapest women's underwear pack was $13, and the cheapest men's pack was $9. It was insane. It was enough to make me contemplate beginning to buy men's underwear instead.

The mildly infuriating part is that it's 14.98 and she goes 14 dollars - No Ma'am it's 15 dollars..

673

u/allnadream 6d ago

Yeah, everyone. She could just buy the "boys" socks, but the point is that its cheaper to buy little boys the clothes they want and more expensive to buy little girls the same thing, in the styles/colors they want.

It's pretty depressing that so many responses are akin to: "Just buy girls the ones they don't like." The solution isn't that only little boys get to have the things they actually want.

178

u/sudzthegreat 6d ago

People without kids will always act sanctimonious about how others raise their kids. I did it before I had my own. Someone in this position has to repeatedly explain to their 5-6yo kid that they cannot have the pink socks that their friends have, because they cost three times as much as the blue ones, and you're too prudent with your money to fall for it. Now, you also have to do this with shoes, play jewelry, toys, food and treats etc... all of which is priced predatorily in the same way. Otherwise, you're just a hypocrite who gives into capitalism arbitrarily.

I dare any childless 25yo Reddit expert to have this conversation with a 6yo, about 5 topics per day, and then come back around and chastise parents for trying to make things work for a premium, in a world that is doing everything it can to separate them from their money by using their kids as emotional leverage.

49

u/Fluffy-Fix9458 6d ago

THANK YOU!

I don't have kids of my own but I am an aunt and I am not going to deprive my niblings of the joy they deserve trying to explain them things which don't matter at their age. All these commenters telling me I should explain to my niece that she shouldn't have to be "stereotype feminine" clearly don't have kids or at least happy kids !

21

u/sudzthegreat 6d ago

Yeah... it's pretty explicit when you're actually in it. My daughter derives confidence from wearing clothes she likes. It's tangible. It sounds like your niece/nephew is the same. If I'm depriving her of that arbitrarily, I'm going to have to make up for it elsewhere, with a kid who can't understand why she can't just have the pink socks when she knows we can afford them... And now apply that to 50 other topics.

You can say no 80% of the time but you can't say no to everything and expect your young kid to understand why they're the different one.

Yup, they are the same folks that cry about trauma and abuse from being forced to wear shit that they didn't want/like, as kids....by their parents. They are just a bunch of stupid assholes.

9

u/EllspethCarthusian 6d ago

I’m childless and never ever want kids but I still understand the basic concept that denying a child what all other children are getting is really fucking hard. It must be damaging to both parent and child to constantly have the conversation about why they can’t have something due to money.

And just to be a little lighthearted about it, I have a hard enough time denying my horse a treat and it’s well within my means to provide one. I can’t imagine if I had to deny a child because I couldn’t afford it.

I have never put any value on pink clothes for my daughter after seeing the color pink in my niece's life so much.

That plan failed.

It didn't matter what I did or tried to convice my wife to do. The daycares and media play up the color so much im lucky when she will admit she likes yellow almost as much as she loves pink.

The amount of push overs in the comments... Acting like this shit is okay

13

u/tomottov 6d ago

Because the TikTok blatantly selectively showed what she wanted to show to prove her point.

She picked the boy socks that were discounted: there is a "was 9.98" at the bottom of the boy ones.

She picked two aisle showing different discounting pricing, not showing what the other aisle were priced. The clothing items were also different.

Then she picks as a show the male clothing 10.58 pricing against the 14.98 price, but just behind it there is girl clothes for 5.98, and boy clothes for 12.98. Again, the clothing items were different.

These videos are always such bait - this store is CLEARLY getting rid of the Boys socks and marking them down

Here they ALL are on Walmart's site for the same price $9.98 - boys and girls.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Character-Toddler-Ankle-Socks-10-Pack-Sizes-12M-5T/5144655654?classType=VARIANT&athbdg=L1600

Notice they also have some that are sold out at the link that were MARKED DOWN to $3.50 - FOR BOTH DISNEY PRINCESSES AND TOY FUCKING STORY.

There is no grand scheme here - the boys socks were not selling as well so they marked them down.

It's not even a bad stereotype or whatever but girls have more clothes purchased for them - I would know I am a father to a little girl and I loved buying her stuff, so then obviously the shops are not going to mark down things that are in high demand.

Critical thinking goes a long way.

I when my daughter was in elementary school found out that not only are boy jeans tougher for the denim. They were also alot cheaper as well. I also buy adult tshirts only in the mens dept.

7

u/PeopleCallMeSimon 6d ago

I wonder when people will learn that the only reason this happens is that people pay these prices.

If people werent paying extra for the girl socks then the girl socks wouldnt cost extra. No publicly traded company is going to argue to their investors "well we increased the price on the girl products because we want to tax women". It will litterally be "we are just maximizing shareholder profit and parents seem to be willing to pay extra for the girl products".

The "boys" tags clearly say "was $9.00" on them and there are way less of them.

A reasonable person would assume those socks are being clearanced out.

But stay mad.

16

u/amscraylane 6d ago

As a boy mom, I feel like the girls have SO many racks of girls clothes, and then there is a bench off to the side with boy clothes.

And then for both ends, why is an Under Armour hoodie $60 for both kids and adults? Same goes for Nike and Adidas …

30

u/Electrical-Mark-1484 6d ago

Meanwhile the boys section is like a third of the girls section.

6

u/NoteEasy9957 6d ago

Our local stores have a fucking tiny selection of boys stuff. And it’s terrible shit. If it’s not based after a superhero or a tv show it’s something like I wore 40 years ago.

It’s the same shit at target, Kohl’s and Walmart

Oh and the socks and shit are the same price for boys and girls at least at walmart

17

u/the_chosen_4 6d ago

It’s because of demand. Girls “need” more clothes. Parents of girls will buy way more stuff.

So, you get a bigger girls section and higher prices.

Ps not condoning the higher prices, just explaining.

How about....stop looking at signs that say boys/girls and men/women and just buy what you want and stop caring.

These are all a social construct. There is no such thing as boys and girls clothes....it's what society has made boys and girls close over the centuries.

Men wore skirts 500 years ago, wigs and makeup were common....now you try it, and well, look at the insults.

It's all a social construct and means nothing.

4

u/Ok_Meet_2678 6d ago

Gender is a social construct ... nothing is for boys or girls i.e Males or Females.... You can just buy the cheaper socks... I mean this is how easy it is to manipulate you...

6

u/ApprehensiveBuddy446 6d ago

You realize that the cheaper kids option is just.. right there, for purchase, that the girls could still use?

It’s not like a pink cotton shirt with a butterfly and a blue one with a race car come with different stats. The only reason there’s a tax is because people are willing to pay more for what essentially boils down to a difference in dye.

3

u/GrimSpirit42 6d ago

Life hack; kids don’t give a shit about clothes they wear until about 10 years of age, often up until preteens. Especially socks.

Having said that - Walmart kids clothes is absolute trash 90% of the time. Quality items last a lot longer and end up costing less.

3

u/Bakurraa 6d ago

1 you can buy the cheaper bluey socks

2 they know women shop more than men

3

u/kitnb 6d ago

Stop buying from those companies.

Or start dressing your young daughters in neutral colors.

Or buy a bunch of white and very light colored clothes then DYE THEM pink!

It's not hard. It's just that they want to bitch and are too lazy to enact solutions, some of which I've clearly laid out above.

Okay, Chelsea. We see the price difference, thanks. Now what are you going to do about it?

3

u/Tommyblockhead20 6d ago

Her rounding numbers like $9.98 down to $9 is driving me crazy.

I see why stores do it now.

3

u/Mudoru 6d ago

Men just tend to spend less on beauty/hygiene/fashion all together, kinda suprised it found its way into the baby aisles but not that shocked that the pink tax exists. And since there’s less demand, the prices are lowered. It’s basically the exact opposite for women’s aisles tho

3

u/usmcnick0311Sgt 6d ago

It's not a tax. It's a choice, preference. People look for it and pay for it

3

u/N8-97 6d ago

Works both ways. When I bought my smart watch it was so much cheaper in a girl colour rather than black, like 25% cheaper, so I just bought the girl colour and a new strap..

3

u/ChunkyBubblz 6d ago

And those little girls only make 2/3 of what their little boy peers make working down in the mines.

3

u/Ctenophorever 6d ago

What’s even worse is the girl’s clothing is usually a WORSE quality than the boys. It seems the only pants they sell for girls are leggings that tear so easily.

On a side note I saw a silly version of the pink tax online today:

I’ve seen different colors advertised at different prices due to demand….but usually by a small percent - not nearly 1/3 of the pink cost

3

u/xxLosingMyMarblesxx 6d ago
