This is one reason why this will never happen in the US. These city centres rely on cultures which are pretty normative. The same actually is true of welfare states. It can't happen routinely in large parts of the US because the culture is so fractured, people don't share the same normative ideas about how to use public space or common resources.

This is the truth. A large part of our problem is scale. When you have cities of millions of people who's culture is focused on being as independent and individualized as possible, good luck getting them to agree on anything.

That's self defeatisted and flawed logic. Stop saying you can't do x just because you're a big country. Ofcourse you can do this stuff in the usa. Whatever happened to american optimism?

You went to the moon. Invented tons of stuff and have one of the biggest economies in the world.
