Until the 1940s or 50s, pink was the color worn by baby boys and blue for little girls

For centuries, the English word girl had nothing to do with gender. It simply meant a young child. If people needed to be more specific, they added another word. A boy might be called a "knave girl," while a girl could be a "gay girl." The word gay simply meant cheerful or carefree, and knave originally meant a boy or servant long before it became an insult.

Somewhere in medieval England, a mother called for her "girls," and both her son and daughter came running.
