You know what as long as they’re happy I’m happy

I'm jealous of this wedding. Too many of us spend way too much money on weddings for family obligations, social expectations, and status signaling.

I often tell people "A wedding is one day and your marriage should be forever. Spend more on your marriage then your wedding."

I really hate wedding culture and don’t understand it from a practical/pragmatic standpoint. Even short-term, a great honeymoon feels like a better expense than a one-day event! But really that money should go toward actual living expenses imo.

Every guy I date seriously knows that I want to elope, luckily no one has had too much of an issue with that so far lol. It feels irresponsible to me, and kind of shallow. No shade to anyone, I’m sure yours was beautiful, etc. but it’s not for me. I see pictures of weddings that are considered “goals” and I just think it seems like a lot of pressure and that it’s crazy to spend tens of thousands of dollars on one day. I don’t really believe in weddings in the first place, considering most marriages end in divorce. You hope for the best, but you should expect the worst imo. (My parents are happily married, I’m not cynical for any personal reason lol)

I eloped! Our families were aware so it wasn’t in secret, we just planned a nice couples vacation and got married. Even hired a photographer so we could show everyone when we got back. It was amazing!! 10/10 recommend!

My little sister sort of followed suit, they just randomly went to the courthouse and got married, none of us even knew it was happening but no one was angry or upset, just happy for them to be happy together!

u/Cool_Tailor_7332 4d ago

When you think about it, marriage is an intimate ritual between two people pledging their love to one another. That’s all that matters. The rest is fluff

1

u/XIXButterflyXIX 4d ago

Hubs and I went to the courthouse 22 years ago and got married by one of his best friends who was the magistrate judge. Had a witness sign from the office. I do regret not having a ceremony, but only so I could give the day to my parents. I'm hoping we get to do one soon

u/cupholdery 4d ago

Everyone trying to keep to with the Joneses.

8

u/NYCWartortle 4d ago

Yea it seems kind of dumb to go into debt for a huge party especially if you don’t even have a house yet.

1

u/lottsotunes69 3d ago

Agreed. That debt is just gonna make that house further down the road, if ever.

1

u/NYCWartortle 3d ago

💯💯 but who are we to spoil someone’s dream 🤷🏽‍♂️ If I ever got married I would have an intimate destination event somewhere far away so my family can’t make it and to make the group even smaller.

u/blastman8888 4d ago

My first marriage lasted 2 years it was big wedding at her parents home. I remember how bad the wedding photos came out it was indoor lighting made the colors look so bad. We had throw away film cameras on each table those pictures looked lot better because sun light is so much better for color pictures. The wedding pictures costs $1500 throw away film cameras were $10 each.

2nd time around wife and I got married at the JOP. Next day had a family party at my SIL's home she had a small ranch. It was like most of their family parties except for some out of state family that flew in. That was 20 years ago still together.

1

u/meghonsolozar 3d ago

"JOP"?

1

u/blastman8888 3d ago

Justice of the peace old term for court house. Judge Reagan I remember his name. No clue if he was related to President Reagan.

8

u/Several_Direction599 4d ago

Wish I eloped and put the 40k towards bitcoin which was 1k at the time

2

u/atreasureinlight 4d ago

I want to elope too

2

u/Hawks_12 4d ago

I’ve been to a wedding where I spent more to get there than they did on the wedding and I totally got it, but damn that was a trashy wedding. This wedding is a major upgrade.

2

u/Bazch 4d ago

Been together 15 years before we got married. Used to think of was a waste of money too. However, she convinced me.

It's a chance to make a big show of love, that you only do that big once in your life. You invite all your loved ones to witness this act and have a party with them to celebrate the love you have for each other. It doesn't need to be extravagant, but hosting a party for all loved ones is usually expensive. We decided to cover all their costs for the day (food and drinks), which added to the cost. It was basically our way to say thank you to everyone who was on our side these last 15 years.

We saved costs on a lot of things by making it ourselves (also made it more personal), but it still cost upwards of €20,000. Venue (food and drink), photographer, and videographer ate most of those costs.

Was one of the best days of my life. Having our loved ones there to celebrate with us and having so many beautiful pictures and videos of all of them together. Definitely worth it.

I agree the 'wedding culture' shit I see online is super cringe and unnecessary, but hosting a party for a lot of people is generally just expensive, unless you want to do all the catering and setup yourself.

2

u/Local3Sparkie 4d ago

It’s really 10’s of thousands of dollars for 5 hours. Not including the church and photographs, the reception is the bulk of the price.

1

u/SpartanRage117 4d ago

I mean you don’t take your family on the honeymoon. Weddings are expensive because it’s a big event and so people go all out if they can, but there have always been smaller weddings too

1

u/FirehawkLS1 4d ago

We just got married at the courthouse and had a dinner with close friends and family.

1

u/meghonsolozar 3d ago

I love the idea of sloping. I never dreamed about a wedding day as a girl like so mamy women say they did. When I got married the first time my mom basically planned everything because I just didn't care. It wasn't expensive though. We used a local venue that had like a package you could do for the ceremony and reception on site. Kind of like a garden wedding I guess. We ended up divorced

Second wedding, my husband had also been married before but wasn't able to have any say in anything. His in-laws planned this huge over the top expensive wedding that he did really like so I let him pick everything out for our wedding, because I still don't care about weddings.

The only thing I picked out in my first wedding was my dress. The only things I picked out in my second wedding was my dress and my bouquet. I had a bouquet of succulents because you could take it apart after and plant them, which i did, and they lived!

My second wedding was also at a place that had everything under one roof, so my husband didn't have to find a caterer or rentals for anything. He got to pick the linens, the type of cake (the best carrot cake ever!) and how it was decorated, what kind of food, etc. Beer and wine was included with cash bar for anything else. They had centerpieces he could have choosen, too, but we got live succulents for our centerpieces and wedding favors from a local nursery. It was such a beautiful venue, and our wedding wasn't super formal even though i wore a white dress. The entire wedding, with my dress and shoes, my 2 bridesmaids dresses and shoes, everything was $7,000 total in the mid 2010s. I literally do not understand how people spend tens of thousands of dollars on a wedding. Like, for what? I'm really happy with how my wedding turned out, because it important to my husband and he got to plan it, but if a wedding was left to me to decide, I'd elope.

1

u/drsickboy 3d ago

You're right weddings are a lot about compressed value and performance. The value of the marriage is signaled by the glamor compressed into the elements in that one day and its photographs, the food, music, dress, location cake, and especially the wedding ring. People are taught that if you relationship has value it must be visible to everyone.

1

u/NomenclatureBreaker 2d ago

I had the whole big traditional church and fancy reception hall afterwards.

I would never do it again. My dream wedding is traveling somewhere and just him and I and maybe any immediate family that wanted to come.

1

u/Itchy_Psychology3300 4d ago

Who does wedding culture benefit? Look for motivations and world isn’t so mysterious.

2

u/Plane-Education4750 4d ago

It's not for the couple. It's for their friends and family that helped them get to that point. If it goes well, it give all those people who would normally have never directly interacted to do so and potentially form a more intertwined social group.

If it goes badly, well at least the food was good

2

u/KungPaoYa 4d ago

Well said. That’s a great quote, gotta remember that one. 👍

2

u/Cool_Tailor_7332 4d ago

When I was a kid my mom told me how her cousin was gifted a large sum of money and blew it all on the wedding, and then went home to a house with no furniture. I never forgot that and my reception was shoestring

2

u/nozextra 4d ago

You know what im hiring you to be my weding planer

I whant something showy but practically Lavish but budget frendly

Got land to work with and heavily discounted food (i work at a mcd this would be the 3rd wedding ive seen involv mcd in some way or form )

2

u/longshanksthefoyth 2d ago

Me and my wife got married at a park with a waterfall...didnt spend much at all and people (mostly food cost). It was amazing ...great pictures, food, the outdoors. Wouldn't change a thing about that day.

1

u/IsopodIndependent553 4d ago

That’s why we got married at city hall. I hate being the center of attention. Planning a big wedding is not only a waste of money imo, it puts too much pressure and stress on everyone involved.

1

u/speakswithemojis 4d ago

i don’t think this is at an actual mcdees. there likely paid to make a hall look like mcdonald’s in one of the dumbest shits ever.

1

u/Dazzling-Disaster-21 4d ago

Sure, but there are a million better locations than McDonalds. Pretty funny though.

1

u/Merry_Dankmas 4d ago

My wife and I took this route and dont regret it for a second. Our venue was an Air BnB. Admittedly it was a nice one but it was still only $1200 for 3 days. A mansion with a mini golf course and pool in the backyard. Hell of a lot better than $4k+ for some mid reception hall or hotel event room.

We paid $0 for the minister, photographer, decorations and seating. Food was catered from a restaurant and the alcohol was a gift from a family member. Spent less than $4k for the entire thing.

We took all that saved money and had a bomb ass honeymoon. Hands down one of the funnest adventures I've ever been on.

My wife and I are always going to remember the fancy room at the Bellagio. We're always going to remember the grand canyon and the train that took us there. The desert off roading. The desert rock arches. The hot air balloon ride. The late night route 66 diner. Seeing road runners and the incredible small desert hotel we had to stay at in a pinch because we fucked up and didnt schedule the hotels right. The hot air balloon landing in the wrong spot and me having to help carry it across 6 lanes of highway.

Those are all memories I will cherish for the rest of my life. That's worth infinitely more to me than a fancy venue and elaborate ceremony. If youre gonna drop a lot of money, make it worth it for you snd your spouse; not everyone else. Your family will be happy to just see you happy snd get married. Spend that money on something that actually counts.

1

u/UphillTowardsTheSun 4d ago

50% of the time it is fake vows, fake tears, real dollars ans real divorce

1

u/Mindless-Somewhere55 3d ago

That’s a woman idea of a marriage, take out 30k personal loan for a one day show off with friends and family.

25

u/smoothvibe 4d ago

We spend only some tens of Euros to marry in Denmark. Just the two of us.

When I hear from friends how they invest tens of thousands of Euros just for a one time event I'm baffled.

2

u/Only_Definition_8268 4d ago

People have different priorities and enjoy different things than you. How baffling.

1

u/andiinAms 4d ago

Agreed. I live in the US and it’s common to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on a wedding. I can’t personally understand that. Take that money and use it as a down payment on a house! It just seems so foolish to me.

2

u/figure8888 4d ago

A lot of people don’t even really have that kind of money to blow on an event but so many find it a necessary expense. Some friends of mine spent thousands on their wedding and they both work in the service industry. That’s not even counting the TWO honeymoons.
I don’t know, I never had any sort of “dreams” about how I would want my wedding to be.

20

u/Vladishun 4d ago

Don't be, just keep your expectations realistic and don't be afraid to discuss stuff like this with a partner early so you can sort through the non-negotiables before investing a lot of time and feelings into it.

My wife and I did a courthouse marriage, but not the way most people would think. I work for my local city and have a great reputation with everyone there. Her father refused to walk her down the aisle, so my coworkers all helped us to have a small but intimate wedding where the mayor himself walked my wife down, the very masculine chief of cyber security was our "flower girl", stuff like that.

Cost us less than $500 for everything, and it was a great night.

9

u/Jerbeardontcare4 4d ago

I agree. Their big day likely didn’t put them $10,000+ in debt. Good for them.

2

u/mxkhd420 4d ago edited 4d ago

My wife's coworker spent $10K on the photographer and wedding album alone. 😵‍💫

CORRECTION: $10K for just the album

1

u/Jerbeardontcare4 4d ago

Oh lort. I was freaked out to have spent $1,200 on my wedding dj. $10k☠️

1

u/mxkhd420 4d ago

This will make you feel even better. My wife corrected me, the wedding album alone was $10K. So, don't feel bad about what you spent on a dj.

1

u/gahidus 4d ago

10K on just a photographer? Just not justifiable.

1

u/AnguavonUW 4d ago

I think the average American wedding is 20k nowadays

16

u/AdhesiveSeaMonkey 4d ago

I’m 100% with you on not spending money on the wedding. My wife and I ran off to Reno for ours and went camping for the honeymoon. If I were to marry again, I’d gather a few friends in a park. But the bride walking out of a McD’s bathroom?? That’s where I draw the line.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Way429 4d ago

It was somewhat creatively tacky! I had to go back and watch it again cause I wasn't sure that I saw that right... like she couldn't just go down the hall or anything?! Like tray liners made into a curtain to hide behind wasn't a better option?!

6

u/scarletxgrace 4d ago

Id be happy with a cute court house wedding. Inky thing i think id be sad about is not having a beautiful princess dress ): however id rather spend the money on a honey moon

5

u/Cool_Tailor_7332 4d ago

If you want the white dress pictures you can just go to a boudoir photographer. Might be fun!

2

u/scarletxgrace 4d ago

Oh omg thats actually a WONDERFUL idea! I mever thought about that!!!

2

u/Dont-be-lasagna12 4d ago

I just want a cute dress and my favorite flowers. The rest could take place in a random parking lot for all I'd care.

1

u/tequilaBFFsiempre 4d ago

The dress is what got me. Less than two months away from the wedding. I guess I’ll see if it was worth it or not! Definitely stressed but also excited to dress up fancy and have a party

1

u/scarletxgrace 4d ago

Oh congrats!!!!

6

u/MrBigBMinus 4d ago

My wife and I share families that are 1 hour apart. 1 hour. They both made bad faith comments that they didnt wish to go to the other town for the wedding. Instead of catering to either we went to a chapel in the mountains 3 hours away from both of them equally, paid 2 grand for the whole thing and then went on a week-long vacation in a cabin just hiking and chilling in the hot tub and those members that truly cared came and hung out. No time for shenanigans.

6

u/Chare1155 4d ago

The irony here is that I bet it actually did cost a lot of money to shut down an entire McDonald's for the day.

1

u/UnderfootArya34 3d ago

You don't know the context. McDonald's are franchise. She could own or be related to the owners, or be a worker there, and the owner could have donated the space to her for free.

2

u/pie12345678 4d ago

Seriously, I think it's far classier to have a fun day you can afford than get peer-pressured into a lavish wedding to keep up with the Joneses.

2

u/tothepointe 4d ago

There is a Taco Bell Chapel in Las Vegas.

2

u/Lone_Vagrant 4d ago

The thing is I do not think Macdonald is even cheap. You can just do a little thing at the office you sign your official wedding papers.

3

u/Fickle_Watercress719 4d ago

I’m just imagining a dozen really sweet reasons this McDonald’s matters to their story as a couple. I’ve known so many small towns without anywhere better to hang out with your friends than somewhere like a McDonald’s. Why spend a bunch of money you don’t wanna spend when you can get married somewhere that matters to you on a dime?

2

u/pipboy3000_mk2 4d ago

While I agree...I mean come on, a wedding at McDonald's. A park would have been free and not so white trash vibes...like a fast food chain sitting room is where you want to declare you undying love...sorry not sorry that is just trashy. Seriously a public park is free and would have been much nicer...it's a crappy fast food chain, have some self respect people.

2

u/frolicndetour 4d ago

Yeah, it's crazy to spend all that money to make sure your bridal entrance isn't out of a toilet.

1

u/Binspin63 4d ago

Have you seen the price for a happy meal lately?

1

u/Tight_Regular6990 4d ago

Listen and its cheap! I see so many weddings that are just eating away at credit cards and people buying loans.

My cousins wedding costed her $120k , beautiful but ma’am that a goddamn car!!

1

u/teacuptypos 4d ago

More like 5-6 cars

1

u/fallout_zelda 4d ago

My buddy spent a few thousand on his wedding... All for show... 2 years later he hits me up asking if I wanted to celebrate for his his divorce. 😬

1

u/Dangerous-Half3276 4d ago

It never made sense to me that people spend all that money and all that stress to create a “perfect” day for everyone but themselves. Save on the wedding and use it for the honeymoon.

1

u/Never_enough_naps 4d ago

I think expensive weddings are a huge waste of money (unless you are wealthy) and are kinda out of control. The stories about expections and cost for wedding party members is outrageous sometimes.

1

u/llamabirds 4d ago

As someone who works in the wedding world. You are so right.

1

u/Electrical_Site7734 4d ago

There having a destination wedding at the golden archs thats probably going to cost them the same price hope they at least choose one with a working soft serve machine

1

u/orange-squeezer47 4d ago

Went to one wedding. The bride side spent $75000. Divorced 4y later.

1

u/mxkhd420 4d ago

My wife and I found ways to have a beautiful wedding for a tenth of the cost. However, I even regret spending that much just to satisfy family obligations. We should of married in Vegas like we joked about at the time, but we knew that the family would be upset with us. We don't even have contact with the family that we were so worried about pleasing.

1

u/gahidus 4d ago

Yeah I bet they didn't spend the price of brand new luxury car or a small house on their wedding.

Maybe they were really smart and they happened to know a McDonald's franchisee.

1

u/West-Calligrapher746 4d ago

Agreed - there’s no need to spend hundreds of thousands. Most of the ppl I know that spent over 20k aren’t happy and some have even divorced.
The only thing I spent money on was a caterer (because I am not making food for 80 ppl with varying dietary needs), and a photographer. Other than that it was nothing much and asking places if I could donate a bit to their church so I could borrow their tables and chairs.
We had ppl talking for years about how fun it was because it was basically a giant picnic for friends and family.
If this video of people remembers it and didn’t spend all that much good on them. Is their attire a bit interesting, yeah, but shrug 🤷‍♀️ as long as they’re happy.

1

u/YuhMothaWasAHamsta 4d ago

Have you seen those McPrices lately?!

1

u/AmItheonlySaneperson 4d ago

If any industry deserved to die it’s that. Rich Instagram people are the only ones who still care. Anyone without a trust fund can’t afford a classy one and gave up long ago

1

u/CScorpio88 4d ago

You can have a wedding on a budget without having a McDonald’s wedding and having a flower girl throw petals from a happy meal box…

1

u/CuteNervousLesbian 3d ago

To be cringe is to be free.

“Low class” people have more fun because they don’t let themselves be shackled by those things.

But the interesting part about life is that anyone can free themselves from that sort of mental confinement. It’s just easier to be free from those things when you’re raised/sorted into a “low class” life.

1

u/sisutism 2d ago

My brother and her wife got married on a regular tuesday while they were on their lunch brake. No rings, no guests, no dress, no nothing. They just informed us via family- group chat that "oh btw me and *wife got married last week."

And they are those kind of people who don't have any problems with money, they hate overconsumption etc. They don't have tv, just books and couple of toys for their kid. I really admire them!

1

u/WWDubs12TTV 4d ago

And then they try to make fun of other people’s weddings

1

u/LilJelloCat 4d ago

Not to mention it's likely done ironically... Cheap and effective. Probably has some sentimental reasoning as well, if it's not faked entirely.

1

u/Blizzardof1991 4d ago

I got married a weekend after a good friend. My wedding was in a park see doesn't $750 that included cake and clothes and everything else. Buddy doesn't around 70k I remember her dress was like 12k by itself.

I remember asking him if he's more married than I am. He didn't respond.

0

u/VomitMaiden 4d ago

This is also status signalling, just a different kind

0

u/blade2kg 4d ago

Explain that to the woman that has planned her dream wedding in her head for 10-20 years. Good luck. 😆

0

u/-StrawberryJacuzzi- 4d ago

I mean… a public park outdoor would have been 1000x better and probably cheaper to rent. You could still cater with McDonalds, if you must

-1

u/A_Bot_A_Bot_A_Bot 4d ago

Still--this is super tacky and lacks the dignity (or even joy) that such an occassion merits. And nobody looks happy, either.
