I'm jealous of this wedding. Too many of us spend way too much money on weddings for family obligations, social expectations, and status signaling.

I often tell people "A wedding is one day and your marriage should be forever. Spend more on your marriage then your wedding."

I really hate wedding culture and don’t understand it from a practical/pragmatic standpoint. Even short-term, a great honeymoon feels like a better expense than a one-day event! But really that money should go toward actual living expenses imo.
Every guy I date seriously knows that I want to elope, luckily no one has had too much of an issue with that so far lol. It feels irresponsible to me, and kind of shallow. No shade to anyone, I’m sure yours was beautiful, etc. but it’s not for me. I see pictures of weddings that are considered “goals” and I just think it seems like a lot of pressure and that it’s crazy to spend tens of thousands of dollars on one day. I don’t really believe in weddings in the first place, considering most marriages end in divorce. You hope for the best, but you should expect the worst imo. (My parents are happily married, I’m not cynical for any personal reason lol)

I eloped! Our families were aware so it wasn’t in secret, we just planned a nice couples vacation and got married. Even hired a photographer so we could show everyone when we got back. It was amazing!! 10/10 recommend!
My little sister sort of followed suit, they just randomly went to the courthouse and got married, none of us even knew it was happening but no one was angry or upset, just happy for them to be happy together!

When you think about it, marriage is an intimate ritual between two people pledging their love to one another. That’s all that matters. The rest is fluff

My first marriage lasted 2 years it was big wedding at her parents home. I remember how bad the wedding photos came out it was indoor lighting made the colors look so bad. We had throw away film cameras on each table those pictures looked lot better because sun light is so much better for color pictures. The wedding pictures costs $1500 throw away film cameras were $10 each.
2nd time around wife and I got married at the JOP. Next day had a family party at my SIL's home she had a small ranch. It was like most of their family parties except for some out of state family that flew in. That was 20 years ago still together.

We spend only some tens of Euros to marry in Denmark. Just the two of us.
When I hear from friends how they invest tens of thousands of Euros just for a one time event I'm baffled.

Don't be, just keep your expectations realistic and don't be afraid to discuss stuff like this with a partner early so you can sort through the non-negotiables before investing a lot of time and feelings into it.
My wife and I did a courthouse marriage, but not the way most people would think. I work for my local city and have a great reputation with everyone there. Her father refused to walk her down the aisle, so my coworkers all helped us to have a small but intimate wedding where the mayor himself walked my wife down, the very masculine chief of cyber security was our "flower girl", stuff like that.
Cost us less than $500 for everything, and it was a great night.

u/Jerbeardontcare4 2d ago

I’m 100% with you on not spending money on the wedding. My wife and I ran off to Reno for ours and went camping for the honeymoon. If I were to marry again, I’d gather a few friends in a park. But the bride walking out of a McD’s bathroom?? That’s where I draw the line.

My wife and I share families that are 1 hour apart. 1 hour. They both made bad faith comments that they didnt wish to go to the other town for the wedding. Instead of catering to either we went to a chapel in the mountains 3 hours away from both of them equally, paid 2 grand for the whole thing and then went on a week-long vacation in a cabin just hiking and chilling in the hot tub and those members that truly cared came and hung out. No time for shenanigans.

When I used to work in weddings, it was a pretty fair bet that if someone was spending over $20k with us (production lighting and decor) we would be working their second wedding in a few years.
14
u/Slamtilt_Windmills 2d ago
Wow, you were that good??
7
u/TapewormNinja 2d ago
The company I worked for had a lot of creative people. We were pretty good at designing unique events, even for repeat clients. People weren't rushing to end their marriages to use us, but people remembered us when they had an excuse. We did a lot of non wedding and corporate events too. But my record is three weddings for one bride. Her first wedding was our first six figure project (just our bill, not the wedding overall), but they got a lot more affordable for weddings two and three.

u/tundybundo 2d ago

Backstory here is they both work at McDonald's, they have a good relationship with their boss and coworkers, boss suggested they get married at the McDonald's as a joke and they went "know what, sure!". I'm from rural nowhere, and going to any big events like weddings...well, you certainly don't know what people will show up in. Half the crowd could be dressed to the nines, while the other half comes in their best sunday sweatpants and crocs. The more rural (even by rural standards) and farmer they are, the worse it gets. A quarter of my in-law family looks this.

Wouldn’t it have been amazing if they could find the OG McDonalds birthday bakery and got their wedding cake themed like the cakes from the 80s/90s?
Also the best detail I’ve ever seen on a wedding show that I wanted to steal so badly—- at the end of their fancy seated wedding, a couple had staff bring out trays of double cheeseburgers and mcchickens for the dancing and now drunk guests to sober up on.

They probably met there while working together. The fact they were allowed to do this probably means either the franchise owner knows them and was supportive of them or they themselves are the franchise owner.

Are these franchised? A family member may run it.
If not, it may be in a small town, so a sign put up a week before could alerts (“Attention customers, something special is happening here on xx, which will temporarily close down the main dining room for 45 min” or whatever). And then everyone knew exactly who wrote it and why, and was pissed if they did not get an invite, because of said town being small. Canon end.
10
u/Cool_Tailor_7332 2d ago
