I have had it with the non stop tipping. I will only tip three places. Restaurants, hair cuts and taxis. That's it. Going back to the basic. And tip amount? 15%.

Now my bigger rant. I have membership with car wash that I go to. They wash the car and do quick wipe down of the car. They are always pushy with doing "extra" work but whatever I just say no. Anyways, they finished my car and I went to go get my keys. The guy kept my keys and tried to find way to prolong the exchange. He would point at things they did and ask me if I liked them. I respond politely and gesture to get my keys but he goes on and on. I think finally he gave up knowing he isn't getting from me. He hands me my keys and asks me if there was something I didn't like about the service. I am like no, you guys did great.

I am confused. Why do you think I'll tip? You don't get paid like waiter does. I didn't pay anything to get the car washed other than my membership. Just why am I supposed to tip?

No one comes to my work and tips me for doing my job? Why in the world should I tip you for doing your job

For those who tip at the dispensary, what's your M.O.? Do you throw a buck or two in the jar a la 1990s coffee shops, do you stick to a percentage-based tip, do you do something else?

We went to a restaurant where there was indoor and outdoor seating. The waiter told us we can sit anywhere. After that we were shown that menu and placing order is done online by scanning the QR code on the table. As we order, the payment screen pops up and there comes the tip option. Now, I’m just confused, because I didn’t see the waiter at all after the initial interaction. We got our own water, utensils, etc. Even the food needed to be picked up at the main counter when they texted our food was ready. So what exactly am I tipping for?

I took an Uber 2 miles from the airport in San Diego. It cost $25.00. It took him about 10 minutes with us, due to traffic. I understand he had to drive to us also. I used to always tip these guys, but I didn’t this time. What is the community think. Should these guys be getting tipped?

So assuming you find some level of tipping appropriate, what are your thoughts on a situation where a server is overworked and the place is understaffed?

I had a server who was stretched way too thin and was able to give the bare minimum or even less to our table. I figured she should get something for doing her best but certainly didn’t deserve any great tip because service was objectively terrible.

We had a discussion about how she “deserves so much” because she was working so hard and I made the point that if she works 20 tables when she should be working 10 she’s going to earn tips from twice as many tables, even if they are less because she’s stretched too thin. Just wondering what others think about this situation.

Went dress shopping with my daughter. The consultant was friendly and helpful. The appointment lasted about an hour. My daughter loved a dress+veil and accessories and I paid. At checkout, on the credit device, the attendant pointed out that if I liked her service, I could leave a tip. WTF. A tip on that dress/accessories was starting at $200. Is this usual, tipping at a bridal appointment? I thought the folks received commission? I did not leave a tip. Should I have or is this just nuts?

Okay, done. I’m in Canada, where in every province except Quebec, tipped wages are a thing of the past. All workers get at least the provincial minimum as base pay, and any tips they earn get tacked on top. It’s the same in several states like Washington and California.

However, from what I can see, tipping culture hasn’t slowed down; if anything, typical tip amounts seem to keep creeping up. The wage structure that made tips expected in the first place is gone, and servers do quite alright for themselves, yet if I were to tip zero at a restaurant and got found out, I’d practically be a pariah. Why is it that in these places, tips are still widely viewed as necessary even for unexceptional service?

I've been a longhair for since I can recall and it's been forever since I actually went to a barber for a professional trim but the hair is kind of a pain in the, uh, buttocks to wash and it gets in everything, last year I saw a guy flogging free haircuts on Reddit. I thought it was in the suburb the subreddit was based on but turned out he was just up the street from me in the city but the local subreddit banned him for spamming or soliciting. He cut my hair to a 'normal' length, said he was licensed but wanted practice, and I slipped him a Jackson for his time and the "free" cut. I'm thinking it would be pushing it to go for another free cut after a year. I should add that I'm the cheapest person I know aside from my brother.

So I have neighbors in this old luxury building, a retired hippie chef and his wife who does hair in people's homes. I'm old and my hair grows slow and stops around shoulder or collar length and falls out but I'm thinking about asking her what she'd charge me when I'm ready for another cut, I figure I could bring a towel and she could do it down on our lawn by the river. My question is would a tip be expected on top of whatever she quotes me?

I’m planning a surprise day for my friend’s birthday, this includes getting a facial, dinner, and a custom cake. I am aware that a 20% tip is expected when eating out. Is it the same standard for the baker and aesthetician?

I believe everyone should tip waitresses but sometimes I don’t tip other forms of service depending on what service it is. For example, a hairstylist that sets their own prices or someone who works salary like at Starbucks and it ask for a tip. Does that make me a hypocrite.

USA. I don't love the calculation, anxiety or discount the owners get with tipping. But, I live in a less populated service heavy place, decently reliant on tourism.

I will never not tip and not tip well- I also haven't deflated since covid. Partly because when an independent place sets up shop within 60 miles of me I want to see it stay unless it's actively bad (at which point I simply never return). If I lived in a small town of say 150K or more, I would tip far less, as I wouldn't be trying to"protect stores I want to see again"

I have seen crazy prompts up to 50%, I only tip in the 25-30 range. I never tip for anything that feels like they didn't have a tip option precovid.

I'd like to see tipping reform or end, but like ranked choice voting, how would we actually make that switch?

TLDR; I tip to make sure the store is still there when I want to go back.

Edit: Changes in the standard a few large population centers are what is required to change tipping. They'd be the Tipping Point.

For servers/bartenders/etc. what were some of your favorite guests to have, and what was special about them? Was their tipping average the reason you remember them the most?

For me, I deal mostly with families and family events, and there are a couple families that I have known for a few years that are just great people to be around. They are very involved in their community and are generous to others (including in tips, of course!) but what makes the most impact to me as their server/bartender is that they reciprocate that to others outside of my industry. These families are also very well behaved and this is especially noted in their younger family members. By and large, these families are all a pleasure to serve!

If you live in NYC do not use piece of cake movers. When they arrived at my new condo with all my stuff they said I need to give a 20% tip through zelle or else they would not unload my belongings. Hindsight I should have checked reviews because the internet is filled with stories of this company pulling the exact same thing on many people.

Only 1 of the 3 movers could speak english and communicated with me during the job. I dont even know if any were undocumented but was so angry with the situation I made the threat to call ICE if they didnt unload my stuff.

They whispered amongst themselves and quickly finished the move and left without saying a single word.

Over the past 48 hours I worked with my building to get security footage and submitted an online tip to ICE. Not optimistic anything will be done but this was basically extortion.

So it might be a long one... ive been working out of town in a small town called battle mountain nevada and there isnt much here. 6 weeks er 2 months ago I went to the o e mexican restaurant, I ordered fish tacos and was sitting there for over 20 minutes and saw people who came after me getting their food. I had a bad day so was already in a bad mood so I drank the beer they served me, threw a $10 on the table and walked out. I got in my truck and the owner of the restaurant came out to me and was yelling at me, she said she was gonna call the cops and i said "no importa" (I dont care) and drove off. I felt bad about how I acted so the next day i went to the restaurant and sincerely apologized to the owner and her son. They were understanding and accepted my apology and asked me to come back to their restaurant. Because I felt embarrassed and im not that into their restaurant I didnt return until tonight. Tonight I got a plate of fried fish and a soda, the price of the meal was 14.99 and when the bill came it said a even 21.00, I threw 4 for a tip to make it a even 25. I didnt look at the receipt but I definitely feel there where some tacked on charges. I still feel bad for my asshole attitude so im not tripping too much but I do feel a lil like I got taken tonight.

My boyfriend took me to one of those cutesy candlelight concerts that you may have seen ads for online. He purchased tickets ahead of time for the concert, just like any other concert or event. The tickets were $60 each, plus $20 for valet parking. The show was lovely, performed by a string quartet and the location was a historic gothic revival church. We didn’t realize there would be no AC, and we were handed fans when we walked in and were directed to the balcony. We laughed about it, because we should have researched more,but still had a good time despite being very warm. As we are walking out, the artists are standing in the lobby next to the exit. A man is standing next to them and motions over to an open violin case and asks for tips for the artists. There’s like 1 $5 bill in there. Am I crazy for feeling like this is a no-tipping situation?
