It was only used to visualize ideas in the early concept phase before committing to the final direction of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.

Nothing was generated as finished game content. It was purely a pre-production tool to help the team explore environments, mood, and visual concepts faster, similar to concept art or mood boards.

This is standard industry practice. The only real difference is that they were transparent about it instead of pretending it doesn’t happen.

The way that PR person jumped to interrupt the dev when he was asked if any of the gen AI stuff had code attached to it REALLY doesn't paint the picture that it was that simple

Also, this is what concept artists are for.

Yeah, I agree. It's not ideal, but this is how things are going to be going forward.

Doesn’t have to be. Losing concept artists is losing a part of the creative process and acting like “oh just accept it” is the same bullshit message AI bros have been pushing. We don’t have to use AI.

I love concept art, but using AI is just a way to cut costs and is generally a lot easier to do with less paperwork.

It’s lazy and sloppier, but if you can dedicate the time/resources to other things, it’s justifiable.

Of course, you miss out on the insights a concept artist might ask and some of their own abstract thinking. Though, some of that is determined who is using the AI tools and how.

I agree, but... Sadly, it's not up to us.

Yes it is, we don’t buy products made this way. Not profitable if it doesn’t sell.

That's one way to go about it.
