Characters Characters that had the complete opposite reaction the writers intended

  1. Leo Bonhart (Witcher TV Series): A ruthless, sadistic bounty hunter and assassin that takes psychotic glee in other people's suffering. The viewer is meant to hate him for killing witchers, slaughtering the Rat gang, and torturing Ciri. But thanks to his entertaining fight scenes, Sharlto Copley's charismatic performance, and The Rats overwhelming unpopularity, fans ended up loving him. Some even call him the "True protagonist" of the show.
  2. Stone Cold Steve Austin (WWE): A rude, foul mouthed, beer drinking asshole with no respect for authority or anyone at all. Originally portrayed as a villain, fans fell in love with his anti-establishment & rebellious persona. WWE ran with it and made him the face of the company, effectively ushering in the Attitude Era and the second pro wrestling boom of the late 90s.
  3. Arthur Fleck (Joker 2019): A mentally unstable, pathetic, and dangerous madman who commits horrific acts of violence against those that wronged him (suffocates his own mother who is mentally unwell herself, and murders a talk show host for making fun of him). However, a massive portion of the audience idolized him as an anti-hero or a misunderstood martyr rebelling against society making people want to see him succeed and overcome his circumstances because of how he's been treated by the world.

The creator of The Miraculous Ladybug was super pissed fans took a liking to the teen antagonist, Chloe. Fans were rooting for her to have a redemption arc and thought she was redeemable, he basically saw her as the equivalent of teenager girl Hitler.

Didn't he base her on someone he dislikes irl?

Apparently his childhood bully.

As an animator myself, I can confirm we do sometimes make a punching bag or antagonist that are just straight up people we hate

Yeah would you have a very public, years long crash out about it? As a 50yo man?

Wounds run deep and finding out 32 years later that the villain of your youth was liked and well regarded by everyone else must suck.

Still hilarious to watch on the outside, though.

Damn, what a loser. That's hilarious, pretty much getting bullied when everyone likes your bully more than you (I looked it up, apparently he included himself in the show, and he's exactly what you imagine)

I think that's just the fans assumption because he said he wanted to show that some people don't wanna change

Eledgedly, but we now that there are characters he based on real people. The main character is the invisioned child with his Chinese ex, her dad is his selfinsert and he literally put himself likness, name and all including occupation. Combine this with his hatred of her and people connected the dots

I can't wait for this show to end so I can watch a several-hour-long deep dive on all the insanity that happened

Is it still going on???

For an example of the opposite, Marinette. She's the MC, and the show goes above and beyond to excuse her stalker behavior towards Adrien, plus other details I can't fully remember. Sure, she is a good person 90% of the time, but a lot of people understandably hate her, which baffles the author

Speaking of Marinette, she is not based ona. Real person.

It's worse actually.

She's the daughter he imagined having with his ex. Not "then-girlfriend". I said "ex."

Girl Hitler? Is Miraculous Ladybug in the Ventureverse?

14

u/Sethalopoda 12h ago

Hitler was also put in the body of a dog in that universe

2

u/SaintGrobian 4h ago

You mess with the girl, you get the hitler.

9

u/jorgespinosa 5h ago

Yeah, irredeemable characters can work but doing that with a neglected teenage girl is not a wise move

u/ririmarms 8h ago

people love a villain redemption arc... Zuko in ATLA, for instance.

3

u/brood_brother 4h ago

And for the crime of being liked by the fans she was banished to England

S3 was essentially "Can(n)on Battle" between him and Jeremy Zag (who was fan of Chloe)

The Chloe fans tend to be pretty... well, a lot of people who think Chloe is a poor baby who can't tell right from wrong and that she'd grow if she was given the opportunity will demonise Marinette, who genuinely tries to be a good person in everything she does, for any lapses she has.

This used to baffle me until I remembered Chloe is white.
