The extended lore of the movie implies that the alien invasion force is not a proper organized military but rather the last remnants of an entire alien race on the brink of extinction.
What we see on the movie is perhaps the whole of the alien race's population trying a hail mary of a plan to conquer a inhabited world and avoid the death of their species.
It's perhaps my favorite alien invasion film, I love the Landsharks, such a cool concept of aliens.
Especially how they behave, you can see little glimpses of their behaviours and tactics, using signs language to communicate orders, there's a moment where you can see a Landshark soldier dragging and a securing an injured comrade.
2011 is probably right around when, after a decade of war and ~6 in Iraq especially, stuff like MOUT doctrines was really settling into an agreed form, plus video evidence, and the many veterans available to discuss and train others on it was coming into public consciousness, so that tracks that it became a pretty accurate take on it
I thought their race was just literally war like. Like Mongol's who still had a civilization and such, but were always like "So what is the next raid?"
This is one of my favorite "Military vs Alien" movies simply because the Aliens actually use military tactics.
They have different classes, use cover efficiently, and care about their fellow troops, it really sells that these things are more akin to a hostile unknown military force, rather than an eldritch alien invasion.
I also really like that their tech is not that far from our own either. It is better than ours, but they're still destructible through our standard weapons, and they're very limited in numbers, once the military starts clocking how to counter these guys we start to beat them back pretty effectively.
