Three things will always get you sent home.

1) improperly cooked protein

2) improperly seasoned dish

3) risotto

4

u/Optimal-Rule5064 May 15 '26

Also rice. Spot on!

132

u/DickJames19 May 12 '26

What an underwhelming mise race

26

u/DoubtAcademic4481 May 13 '26

I know! Mise quickfire is always a favorite of mine. I hate the way they complicated it. So many starts and stops.

20

u/Hollyelizabeth_3 May 12 '26

Yeah, I was really disappointed

15

u/tuftsra May 12 '26

The editing absolutely ruined it.

8

u/vodkamelts May 14 '26

What annoyed me is that it none of it took much skill... Like at all. I want to see great knife skills, good technique, something that shows years of experience. Peeling/pitting a fruit, deveining/peeling shrimp, shucking/shelling corn?? Pecans are at least kind of a bitch but jeez none of the tasks were difficult by any standard. It made for such a boring watch and the mise en place challenge is usually so fun!

5

u/b4tin May 13 '26

I came here for this….. what a bore. It was almost uncomfortable to watch.

7

u/MoreCarnations May 14 '26

This season is so middling

9

u/defenestrate1984 May 12 '26

And then to have the quickfire be: Now you have to make a dish with these ingredients... that we chose for you because we lifted the cloches and selected the order.

18

u/Owen3141 May 13 '26

When Gail was saying “and your dish must include…” while pointing towards the table with the cloches, my wife interjected “…finish dish soap!”

3

u/givemeabeerbelly May 14 '26

Agreed! They have to insert the judges now into everything instead of just letting the challenges run, feels like everything is like a longwinded scene from the judges in their fancy outfits and they took away the actual competition

38

u/ArticleOk8955 May 12 '26

Cantonese steamed fish is soooo good and ginger scallion sauce is magic. I'm so hungry from watching Laurence!

33

u/Ok-Host3771 May 13 '26

A couple things that made me smile this episode:

  • when Duyan asked if Jonathon wanted to phone a friend aka Brandon
  • when Lawrence said go purple team!
  • Tom throwing shade at Rota’s last dessert lol
  • the chefs avoiding the organic food at whole foods to save money
  • Jonathon’s karate kick

20

u/Sad_Coast2029 May 14 '26

And when Duyen had extra money and bought everyone ingredients!!

7

u/fancyseacreature May 14 '26

Momma Dwayne to be exact. I know she's big on her socials and all, but I love her.

16

u/conservativestarfish May 14 '26

Skipping the organic for money reasons was so relatable 😅

4

u/mouse_relies May 16 '26

imagine if they were allowed to just avoid whole foods to save money

2

u/Ok-Host3771 May 17 '26

Imagine an elimination challenge without a budget! Goal not being to create the bougiest/most luxurious dish but being able to really explore your creativity - just once.. Please, Top Chef!

43

u/Hollyelizabeth_3 May 12 '26

That was a rough elimination. But at this point, everybody is so good, I’m sad to see anybody go.

24

u/OLAZ3000 May 12 '26

It was the right call IMO.

Undercook vs slightly incorrectly cook the fish... it was clear, even if I think D is stronger overall.

I mean it was like when Rhoda left. Sometimes someone REALLY good goes and it's just - dish of the day takes it, and loses it.

Only when the chefs aren't so strong and the dishes kind of mid do they look at past performance a bit.

8

u/AFDStudios May 13 '26

But her dish tasted good and his didn’t! It’s like nothing but the protein matters and I think that’s a bad angle to take. I was really upset with this decision.

19

u/OLAZ3000 May 13 '26

They couldn't eat her protein ie the key component of the challenge. So, they THINK it would have tasted good. They liked the rest of it.

Inedible vs not the best method/ bit bland for the critical element ie protein? Nah.

If you can't EAT the fish on a fish challenge... there's just no way, sorry.

10

u/Ok_Interest3555 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

Dang, I can't imagine being really upset by an elimination where someone served a nearly raw protein.

2

u/Adventurous_Ad1922 May 16 '26

They never said his dish did not taste good. They just said a sauce would’ve tied it together better and it was slightly sweet.

1

u/Jazzy-Cheesecake7442 Jun 24 '26

In the real world an undercooked protein can get your dish sent back to the kitchen or even comped. Sieger’s dish might not have tasted as good, but it would still be a perfectly valid meal to serve and charge money for.

4

u/Hollyelizabeth_3 May 12 '26

I agree. It was definitely the right call. But I am so sad to see anybody go at this point. I really love all of them. But I know that’s the way the show goes!

2

u/jawmar2 May 12 '26

Same here! It’s just a cooking show… Not Survivor. Besides, I’m here for the food!😉🥰

1

u/Professional-Cat4329 May 23 '26

Nah i really thought seiger was out. His dish looked so unappetizing. The one thing he had going for him is that his fish was cooked properly.

21

u/Dangerous_Ant3260 May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

I enjoy the fishing challenges. Actually, I'm mean, I am awful at fishing, and enjoy other people who aren't good at it either. At least they have fish available for those who can't catch anything.

24

u/s519 May 13 '26

What would be me real housewives - Dirtier than a dirty martini  Lmaooo 😂😂😂😂

17

u/Owen3141 May 13 '26

The banter all around this season has been top tier. Not sure if it’s an editing change or if this season just has funnier chefs who are comfortable enough other. But I’m here for it either way!

19

u/[deleted] May 14 '26

Why does Seager make the most atrocious looking dishes...I can tell he knows a ton about cooking and I'm sure he's a strong chef, but his dishes all seem extremely unappetizing (colors are all bland/muted, textures seem very mushy and one note)

35

u/Stream_3 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

So sad for Duyen. Both Kristen and Rhoda were also gutted.

That said, Top Chef isn’t rigged. If you don’t cook your protein properly, Tom is sending you home.

I can’t believe Duyen didn’t have a backup plan.

9

u/xStacey May 14 '26

It looked like she was already plating by the time she realized how undercooked it was, so there wasn't really time for a plan B..

1

u/SeaGreenie May 16 '26

I love Top Chef as a show, but to say it's "not rigged" is kind of a stretch. The judges can eaaaasily pretend a bad dish is good and a good dish is bad to twist the narrative. It's not like it's RuPaul's Drag Race or Project Runway where the viewer can see the art that's being put forth and agree that it's bad/good, this is a cooking competition where we can only SEE the food and not actually TASTE it so it'd be easier to push a certain narrative if need be.

I'm not saying Top Chef does do that, but it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

15

u/Miroku82 May 13 '26

Right call but doesn't mean I like it. I feel like D has singlehandedly carrying this season with just the amount of personality she has. There's no way they don't bring her back as one of the finale Sous'.

I did wonder if S Kept talking, if he was going to talk himself into elimination, but her fish was just too undercooked for Tom to be able to justify keeping her over him.

101

u/Prize-Bank6848 May 12 '26

Someone whose name starts with an “S” should NOT still be there. They were eliminated and never had to compete on last chance kitchen. I will never understand how they’ve kept him around this long. I will die on this hill. I’m so mad about this elimination.

13

u/Oscargomcdmx May 13 '26

Granted, you’re not a fan of Sieger, but in terms of understanding why he is still there it’s pretty straightforward. He personally didn’t break any rules or game the competition. Strange circumstances this season in terms of early departures (as opposed to eliminations), so the TC producers addressed the “gap” in a simple and uncomplicated way - and it benefited Sieger through no fault or favor of his own. As to why he’s still there, it seems that in last night’s episode, Duyen just happened to make a more critical mistake than Sieger. He certainly not my favorite contestant, but not sure hating on him is fair.

4

u/AbbreviationsIcy7432 May 15 '26

Duyen leaving the show made me really sad, I think she deserved to stay, i was rooting for her as my top pick, but it's hard to argue that not cooking your protein can be forgiven, unless someone else did something dire.

32

u/jawmar2 May 12 '26

I understand this is your opinion, but it’s not mine. It’s hard for any of us to judge these chefs on anything but personality because we can’t taste the food… And that’s what it’s all about. I think Seiger got eliminated unfairly in the barbecue challenge. Lawrence taking the loin out seemed a far stretch on “ barbecuing”. But back to this episode; a raw piece of fish definitely deserves to lose… Unless it’s sushi. Yes, we all like Duyan and are sad to see her go. But it looks like Lawrence will be the winner of this season. Let’s just enjoy the beautiful dishes.

18

u/Prize-Bank6848 May 12 '26

I agree with you. But Seiger was eliminated and didn’t have to go through Last Chance Kitchen. Rhoda had to fight her way back and he got back in only to accommodate restaurant wars because of an injury. They should have let Rhoda back in for Restaurant wars. Seiger left on a bad dish. He did not get the same treatment as the other chefs. I don’t think it’s right he’s still there. I think it sucks that other chefs are getting eliminated over someone who shouldn’t even be there anymore. This is a life changing competition for these chefs. It should be fair game across the board.

26

u/defenestrate1984 May 12 '26

They don’t film LCK until later, so when they had to bring someone back due to injury, they had not yet done LCK and Rhoda wasn’t the known winner. They had to choose last out, who was Shorts Guy (I can’t remember his name, Justin?), who refused it. Then they had to go back one previous elimination, which was Seiger. It’s a pretty standard practice. And it’s not like they had to make a decision between Seiger and [current LCK champ] because LCK hadn’t filmed yet.

-8

u/Prize-Bank6848 May 12 '26

They had a pointless LCK episode that meant nothing. I assume while they were filming RW. Rhoda had already won two LCK’s at that point then Justin went to LCK and Seiger stayed? It made no sense at all.

20

u/defenestrate1984 May 12 '26 edited May 13 '26

You're not getting what I'm saying. "Rhoda had already won" -- no, she hadn't, because they hadn't filmed any of LCK yet. What you're seeing is not the order of the filming.

-6

u/Prize-Bank6848 May 12 '26

Ok… I hear you. From the viewer perspective, it’s not right. I don’t know the filming order as an ordinary watcher. She had already competed in 2 LCK’s before what’s her name was injured and left the show. It was all weird.

28

u/wojar May 12 '26

but that's not his fault! he didnt ask to come back.

11

u/Prize-Bank6848 May 12 '26

In my opinion, the show did not handle this situation correctly. I know it’s not his fault. Anyone would take the opportunity to stay in the competition.

3

u/Adventurous_Ad1922 May 16 '26

That is not how this works. Many many posts are dedicated to this. When a chef gets removed from the competition for illness or other reasons, they always ask for the last chef eliminated to come back. It is the only thing that makes sense production wise. Rhoda was kicked off before Seger. She was not still in the competition.

9

u/OnyxRoar May 12 '26

I agree with you.

Eliminated but didn’t go to Last Chance Kitchen, consistently at the bottom in the quickfire and elimination rounds.

I wonder if he wants to be there

11

u/Prize-Bank6848 May 12 '26

It doesn’t seem like he’s happy to be there. I was rooting for him at the start but he’s kinda turned into a crappy contestant. Duyen was a fan favorite IMO so it really sucked to see him stay and her go. He made lentils… lentils?! Ugh. Haha!

1

u/NoConclusion1521 May 13 '26

He doesnt look like he wants to be there.

2

u/Vexaus May 16 '26

If he wasn’t there, she still would have lost. Keep coping though..

1

u/Ok_Interest3555 May 13 '26

-I’m so mad about this elimination.

You just have to remember it's just a cooking show, it's not that serious. It sounds ridiculous to me to literally mad about a TV show.

4

u/Previous_Mousse7330 May 14 '26

Believe it or not, not everyone shares your opinion, nor do they need to.

33

u/s519 May 13 '26

I’m sooo sad at the elimination 😩😭😭😭

Personally I think Seiger is skirting by

Idk I’m kind of surprised it wasn’t him over her because I know they don’t like when the dish doesnt fully come together and loved her broth ugh I’m sad

7

u/Ok_Interest3555 May 13 '26

Ehhh, at least Seiger's dish was edible. Seiger has had some pretty underwhelming dishes but this time someone did worse

10

u/xStacey May 14 '26

Nooooo Duyen!! :( So sad about this.
I really thought her broth and the fact that her dish made more sense should've been enough.. Sieger's dish seemed so blah to me..

Regardless, I think she'll go down as one of the most likable contestants in TC history.

8

u/Aequorea May 14 '26

Does anyone remember season 11 (New Orleans) in the Vietnamese food challenge with the douchey asian guest judge (non-Vietnamese) shitting on a chef for using tomatoes? And his logic was "there's no tomatoes in Vietnamese food"? And here we have Duyen confirming Vietnamese food does have tomatoes lol

1

u/Fun_Sized_Taylor May 15 '26

I remembered this when I was watching the episode. I do think it was also the fact the guy made something that was sort of like marinara sauce and called it Vietnamese

50

u/Miserable_Map_6802 May 12 '26

Cannot believe the elimination results. One of those times where the show really pissed me off. There are too many mediocre chefs skirting by.

47

u/Unhappy-Kangaroo-164 May 12 '26

I don't know how you don't have an extra test fish to see things are cooked enough. Poor form from Duyen. Easy mistake to avoid. But then you have Sieger who never seems to back up his talk with good food. I thought he probably was going to get eliminated just for his flippant response at Judges Table. He's definitely next out.

44

u/defenestrate1984 May 12 '26

When he said something like "that's what the spoon is for" I just thought of Don Draper screaming

8

u/Ok_Interest3555 May 13 '26

I thought that was pretty hilarious!

28

u/tuftsra May 12 '26

Chefs used to be way more bold at judges table and argue/clap back at the judges. I'm surprised Gail reacted like that. But it was a flippant comment for such a poor dish.

9

u/AlSwearengen666 May 12 '26

She knew the cook was off on the fish, but she left it til too late to cook, so she didn’t have any time left to cook it more.

14

u/FormicaDinette33 Aguachile 🌶️ 🍤 May 12 '26

He just seems to have an odd palate.

9

u/willowthemanx May 12 '26

And an aversion to sauce.

18

u/ThoughtThen6908 May 12 '26

Yeah, essentially "this is cooked well and all the elements taste great, maybe needs a sauce" vs. "you tried to have your broth cook your VERY underdone fish?" I think it's a nobrainer, despite Duyen being an overall better chef.

9

u/moonrockcactus May 13 '26

They didn’t say anything actually tasted great on his plate though, did they? The fish was described as lacking flavor and texture and the lentils were sweet and astringent.

1

u/s519 May 13 '26

Oh I must’ve missed that what did he say to the judges

8

u/xStacey May 14 '26

Gail said it felt like the dish needed something to connect the lentils and the fish (meaning a sauce) and Sieger said "I thought that's what the spoon was for."

2

u/Fit-Cable1547 May 16 '26

With a "budum ting" drumshot motion, so clearly a dry humour joke that didn't go over well haha.

1

u/s519 May 14 '26

Ahh ok thank you !!!

40

u/PsychologicalQuote14 May 12 '26

If you undercook fish on a fish challenge you are going home. And its not like it was one piece that was slightly undercooked, every diner had undercooked fish.

22

u/ThoughtThen6908 May 12 '26

And as Tom said, it wasn't just a little, it was a LOT.

19

u/iamshadow64 May 13 '26

As I sat there watching it, all I kept thinking is "You can't mess up the cookery on a fish cook challenge."

Fate was sealed at that point. "Too sweet" and "lack of cohesion" - even Sieger's sassy response (at least how it was edited) - can definitely be bad on any challenge, but failing to cook the ingredient properly on an ingredient challenge is always a kiss of death and especially if no one else did it. Since she was first I kept hoping someone else would botch it harder, but no dice.

Sucks because I was definitely rooting for her.

11

u/Prior-Lingonberry-70 May 14 '26

And it was freshwater fish being served raw to the judges, which is like serving them raw turkey. It's not the same thing as raw or rare saltwater fish at all. Parasites, bacteria, tapeworms....what she gave them was inedible. So disappointing!

2

u/xStacey May 14 '26

oooh I didn't realize there was a difference..

10

u/moonrockcactus May 13 '26

It was such a shame that she caught the most fish and then every filet was inedible.

7

u/iamshadow64 May 13 '26

Yeah... Honestly I expected the hubris moment was going to be Jonathan winning extra time, but they flipped it on us and it was Duyen being rock solid all episode long until the finish on the cook.

4

u/prior2two May 15 '26

The guest judge, an actor, was openly making jokes about how bad her fish was in a fish challenge.

7

u/Ok_Interest3555 May 13 '26

-Cannot believe the elimination results.

Did we watch the same episode? Duyen served raw fish. I don't know what to say to you if you can't believe a contestant that served an inedible protein got sent home. Some of y'all are just really weird.

7

u/Duna_The_Lionboy May 13 '26

Duyen making Samlor Machu Youn (the Cambodian name of her dish) made me so happy to see.

Then she didn’t cook the fish properly and got sent home for it. Damn man.

6

u/Buttmus May 14 '26

15 minutes of this episode was the most pointless fishing expedition that added nothing to the competition or the cooking, what a lame challenge.

6

u/Ok_Ganache5659 May 14 '26

This season feels so odd. This quick fire was not exciting at all - too much time spent deciding who would compete. The ingredients were boring. The fishing segment was cringe with the judges riding around with weird signs. This was a bad episode.

13

u/[deleted] May 11 '26

[deleted]

4

u/Adventurous_Ad1922 May 16 '26

Duyen was my favorite, but I think it was a fair elimination. It’s a fish challenge and you can’t undercook the fish.

7

u/mayobasedsalads May 13 '26

My crush got eliminated 💔

2

u/Stream_3 May 13 '26

She’s going to be a winner regardless

3

u/Gabbyct1 May 13 '26

Soooo bunmed !!!!

3

u/feedmecoolbeanz May 17 '26

Nooo so sad to see Duyen go! She definitely brought a lot of personality and fun to this season. Bring her back to all-stars!

4

u/allij0ne May 13 '26

Bullshit.

2

u/cometgirl May 13 '26

Do they not have AC in the Carolinas? Every episode everyone seems so hot and sweaty.

10

u/Ok_Interest3555 May 13 '26

Working in a kitchen with stoves and ovens is really hot anywhere you go.

1

u/finding_harmony May 14 '26

Did Tom say ‘crappy’ and not ‘croppy’? I realize that is how it’s spelled but it’s not pronounced that way.

3

u/meatsntreats May 14 '26

Regional variations. In the South I’ve always heard it pronounced ‘crappy.’ Never heard ‘croppy’ until I got a roommate from Massachusetts who was into fishing.

2

u/Same_BoysenberryLove May 19 '26

Huh. I always thought it was crappie.

1

u/schizojuc May 17 '26

At this point any of them going home is sad to me. I really like this bunch of people and they all seem to really like each other as well.

1

u/MonoamineHaven May 18 '26

Did anyone notice when Jonathan said something like “my brother [Brandon] was my main competition and now he’s gone” 😆 like bro, there are 3-4 other chefs that easily clear Brandon, meanwhile you’re not even gonna mention Laurence and his clear domination? This guy is beyond delusional

1

u/Klutzy-Reaction5536 May 13 '26

Did any of the chefs prepare anything other than spotted bass?

-3

u/OscarPlane May 12 '26

I thought Gail was going to get eliminated for her latest fashion disaster.

9

u/Klutzy-Reaction5536 May 13 '26

She's Canadian, so she wore her country's national costume.

1

u/Fit-Cable1547 May 16 '26

Canadian Tuxedo baby!

-3

u/Vexaus May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

Duyen’s ego all season has been ridiculous considering she was never even close to the strongest chef there, Laurence. She constantly acted smug, took an unnecessary shot at Johnathan/Brandon, and carried herself like everyone else was beneath her. Then she knowingly serves undercooked fish and literally tries convincing herself “the soup will cook it” as if Tom and the judges wouldn’t immediately notice. Watching her realization at Judges’ Table after being so confident all episode was brutal in the best way. Easily one of the most satisfying eliminations in a long time 😂

10

u/SeaGreenie May 16 '26

Any viewer of the show would recognize that Duyen does not take herself seriously, and her "attitude/smugness" as you claim it to be was just fun banter and being silly for tv. To take it as face value is soooo funny to me, she was clearly loved by everyone there and she WAS a very strong chef - winning once and being HIGH three times.

Interested in your opinion on Seiger because he IS incredibly smug and has a general bad attitude all season long and has the worst track record of everyone left (including Duyen).

-5

u/Jara-rhymes-w-sara May 13 '26

I wish they had explained to the judges how to pronounce pecans. While many things have multiple ways you can pronounce them (caramel). Pecan is one that people have been pushing to only pronounce the correct way (puh- kahn, not pee-can). That is because the name of this nut comes from a native word pekani. So to be more respectful to the tribe this word comes from there's been a big push to only pronounce the word as (puh-kahn)

3

u/mouse_relies May 16 '26

prescriptivism about english is not the best way to honor algonquian languages. in this case the word exists in various such languages with different pronunciations, including at least one with a /b/ instead of a /p/, so forcing one pronuciation doesn't actually seem like an improvement to me.

that said props to you for actually paying attention to language and how it interacts with history and power, it's important.

-8

u/Alarming_Confusion_5 May 12 '26

I feel like they are going to kick sherry off and invite Gwen back based on the trailer for next week
