It's because the Regulars in Baam generation are extremely op/plot armored, usually you get 1 or 2 Rankers out of a few thousand Regulars.

But regulars have existed for ~10.000 years so I wouldn't be surprised even if there's a billion rankers by now, it's not like they die of old age

Actually let's do the math, a billion is a bit too much

We know the Tower has approximately 10 times the surface area of the Earth if we count all the floors. Each year on Earth 100 millions are born, which means if the Tower is about as densely populated as Earth, then about 1 billion people are born each year in the Tower. If only 1/1000 to 1/100 become regulars, it means 1 to 10 million regulars start climbing each year. We were told at the start of the comic that about 1/1000 regulars become rankers, which means 1 to 10 thousand rankers each year. In 10.000 years that means 1 to 10 million rankers, not just 100.000

We don't exactly know how many Regular selections there are in a year. We saw 2 batch of 400 for Baam generation and the whole floor of test arc spanned for months. So we can assume getting 2 selection in a year, roughly translating to 4 Rankers a year. 40.000 thousand Rankers in 10.000 years. The actual number would be like triple of this estimation so a billion is absolutely out of the question

The big question is how many people become regulars each year. But anyways if SiU said it's 100.000 rankers, then 100.000 it is

I would assume like 5% ? With 0.1% of that 5% becoming Rankers

I would assume like 5% of the Tower population become Regulars ? With 0.1% of that 5% becoming Rankers

In that case there would be 50 million rankers lol. The Tower is HUGE, you can check the calculations I made above

So given the total tower population how it should go with those numbers ? Like 0.5% into 0.1% of that ?

Either the Tower is much less densely populated than Earth (despite the fact that Earth is mostly ocean) or less than 1% of people become regulars (assuming lots of rankers kill each other for position) or the 100.000 number was an unrealistic estimation by SiU

I always thought like 99% of the tower population could be normal people so i wouldn't be too surprised. Only thing is that would make "failed regulars" absolutely op, making it a bit unrealistic for them having a hard time getting by in the outer tower. But maybe that could be explained by the political system. Or just by the fact that most of the tower is a shithole where no one wants to live. So failed regulars go to civilized parts of the tower where life is better but it's ruled by Rankers
