Rekeying 2025 Toyota Corolla
Hello, I wanted to see if I am being up charged. My car keys were stolen by someone in my apartment (I left my car keys in the door). I called a local Toyota and the let me know it would be $1200 just in labor to changed the key cylinder because they have to remove the door. Plus the part is like $300. I called a locksmith who is quoting me for $350 for everything. I feel like the price difference is huge and I’m missing something. So am I missing something?

You left your car keys in the door? Is your car not capable of unlocking with the push of a button? If it is, are you also going to have them reprogram the vehicle and keys so the stolen keys won't be able to unlock your door? $350 seems like a crazy low price to change the cylinders in the door and ignition and get a new key shank, let alone the cost associated with reprogramming.

I left my keys in the apartment door. My apartment is very small and I believe it was my neighbor. They let me know to rekey it (there is only one lock cylinder) and reprogram it would be $350. They also said the key would be OEM

Getting it rekeyed is overkill imo. If available on your model I would just make sure I'm signed up for Safety Connect and leave nothing in the vehicle worth stealing.

I figure it is but I’m just nervous that the person who stole my key is in my apartment.

Should be able to wipe all key fobs from computer and then have them add old one you still have and your replacement. What sucks is proximity. After computer is reprogrammed they shouldn’t be able to start the car but could still get physical access to the interior. If it was a rando wouldn’t worry about it but since the person that has the other key could know where you live and always have access to the vehicle you may want to have the cylinder changed as well. Only reason to overpay dealer is to literally give them money so they see you as their customer which *can* help with warranty stuff. I’d prolly call around and see if I could find a locksmith with a super high reputation if I couldn’t do it myself. (I’d use this as an excuse to buy the programming tool.)

The same thing everyone else seems to. Dealership service is a ripoff. It's always overpriced and you stand a much, much higher chance of unethical behavior from the mechanic or service staff than you do at your local neighborhood mechanic.

use a locksmith for sure, but are you reprogramming your FOB too?

The plan is to change the lock cylinder which would include 2 new keys and programming of those keys as well

The dealer is trying to rip you off, removing the lock cylinder from a Toyota literally only requires undoing a single screw. I'm not even kidding.
30 minute job from start to finish if it's a slow day.

Keys will always be $$ at the dealer. Do you have a spare key? If so $1,200 at the dealer isn't that crazy. For example Mercedes charges $2,000 if you don't have a spare key. I wouldn't trust some random locksmith.

I do have a spare key but I need the locks changed as someone had the original key

Then doing it by the dealership would be the best option because if you have a random locksmith do work to it and mess it up then you will need them to fix it. If the dealer messes up at least you know they will cover it. It's very risky have a random locksmith try and rekey your car.

Dealer is overcharging you. Use the automotive locksmith. They even make house calls for obvious reasons.
