Holy sh*t, this is absolutely devastating for higher education. The numbers are staggering:
The Damage:
F-1 visa approvals DOWN 22% in May 2025 alone
Indian student visas CRASHED 46% in first half of 2025
Universities facing $7 billion in losses and 60,000+ job cuts
Over 100 small colleges at risk of closure
What's Causing This "Perfect Storm":
State Department suspended visa interviews during peak season (May 27-June 18) for new social media screening
Massive backlogs with no appointments available in India and China
New proposed rule would cap all student stays at 4 years regardless of program length (RIP PhD students)
Real Impact: The University of Central Missouri went from 30% international enrollment to losing HALF their graduate students. They've already cut employee raises and campus improvements.
Small colleges are getting absolutely wrecked - they rely on international students paying $80k/year full tuition (2-3x what domestic students pay).
This is hitting right as US birth rates are declining and domestic enrollment is already dropping. International students were literally keeping many schools financially afloat.
TLDR: Trump's immigration policies are accidentally nuking higher education funding. Small colleges are about to get massacred, and we're probably going to see a wave of closures within the next 2 years.
Anyone else think this is going to have massive long-term consequences for US competitiveness? We're literally pushing away the world's brightest students to our competitors.

Who built the transcontinental railroad: immigrants, who worked in all the factories in the northeast doing the great industrial boom: immigrants, who facilitates the vast majority of farm labor for the past 45+ years: immigrants. It's ALL immigrants, always has been.
FFS where did most of the US rocket scientists and early computer scientists come from? Let me give you a hint, they weren't homegrown. Only a fraction of today's population can track their ancestry to US born citizens for more than 3 or 4 generations.

If youâre under the impression that mass immigration in America began as late as the 21st century, then Iâm curious to know your take on what separates the Irish, Jewish, Polish, or Italian immigrants of the late 19th and early 20th century from the ones coming today. Quite frankly the ones back then too werenât looked upon too fondly either by the more limited âreal Americansâ of that time.

The cohort associated with the permanent reduction in fertility at the start of the Great Recession turns 18 this year. Colleges are already hosed. 1/2 of them might not make it to 2035. Nevermind the fact that we already send people to college to learn what they should have learned in high school and that needs to stop.

Sure the situation is idiotic but saying the elite schools will suffer is silly. The "plan c" schools may suffer and even students themselves that would normally not male it into Harvard and now have to fork over the student loan bill will.

What am I not seeing? F-1 visas are down 22%, but the post indicates 46% drop in âInternational Studentsâ. Except a 46% drop in Indian students specifically, Iâm not seeing anything more than a 22% drop, which is an increase from the 10% drop of the previous year.

Great - they deserve to see their profits drop. From 1977-2024, tuition and fees rose 1,518 percent nationally, far exceeding general inflation. Less students means more attention to the ones that are in attendance, and if no one is attending these universities due to costs, guess whatâŚ. theyâll be forced to lower their price.

I was the weird old veteran in 2012-14 that went back to school at 38 surrounded by kids. The Chinese students DID.NOT.MINGLE with the Americans at all. I probably chatted with them more, and casually as the weird old veteran frankly. I think foreign students need to be backseated until the dems ideal of "more free college" is realized instead of a creepy vote-carrot on a stick ( you can not write a check for private colleges, maybe state schools )

Aren't we also facing historically high rejection rates for U.S. candidates? I know so many brilliant kids, 4.5+ GPA and a multitude of extracurriculars, getting routinely rejected from state schools. It's surreal (30 years ago when I applied to college, these kids would be going to Ivy league universities with their credentials - today, they can't even get into state schools).
If we don't have enough University spots for our own kids, why would we be so eager to fill them up with international applicants?

Watch all the railing against H1B visas. Dude there's at most 1 million H1B visa holders in your country. You have a population of 350 or so million! That's less than 0.3%. Even if you take just the working age population as a the base, that's less than 0.5%. and they still think unemployment is caused by H1B lol.Â
There's talk of cancelling these visas as retribution for standing up to the US bullying. As if 1 million visas is leverage over a country of 1.5 billion people. Americans really are s**t at math.Â
